Chapter 80 Chapter 80
CHAPTER EIGHTY
Dimitri's POV
I had ducked before the bullet flew. Glass shattered over my head and shoulders, but I wasn't hit.
“Go!” I had yelled at my men. “Get to Irina. I’ll draw them off.”
They didn't hesitate, they sped off.
Viktor's men kept firing at me as I drove. I pulled out my gun and shot back at their tires.
One car swerved and crashed into another.
They were distracted now.
I sped off quickly towards the medical facility.
When I arrived, everywhere was silent. There were signs of struggles. Broken windows, bullets and glass everywhere. My heart raced at the worst case scenario but when I entered, my men were with Irina. They had saved her and called paramedics too.
Now Viktor's men had regrouped and came for us. We were escaping when they hit us.
Glass exploded everywhere as bullets tore through the windows.
I threw myself over Irina, shielding her body with mine.
"Get down!" I shouted to the driver.
More bullets hit the car. The sound was deafening.
"Boss, we need to move!" The driver yelled.
"Reverse!" I ordered. "Call for back up now!"
The driver threw the car into reverse and we shot backward.
But more cars appeared behind us, blocking our escape.
We were trapped, completely surrounded.
"Damn it!" I cursed.
I looked at Irina, her face was pale and she was barely conscious.
Blood was seeping through her bandages.
"Stay with me," I whispered to her. "Do not close your eyes."
"Dimitri," she said weakly. "I am scared."
"I know baby, I know," I said. "But I will get us out of this."
The gunfire stopped suddenly and everything went silent.
That was worse than the shooting, the silence meant something was coming.
A voice called out through a megaphone.
"Dimitri Volkov! Step out of the vehicle!"
It was Viktor Orlov, I recognized his voice.
"Come out now and I will let your wife live!" Viktor shouted.
I looked at Irina again, she was fading fast.
"Do not listen to him," she whispered. "He will kill us both."
She was right but what choice did I have?
I could not fight all of them, they were too many.
"Boss, what do we do?" The driver asked.
I thought fast, my mind racing through options.
Then I remembered the documents, they were still in the passenger seat.
"Give me your phone," I told the driver.
He handed it to me quickly.
I called Sergei Petrov.
"Dimitri?" Sergei answered. "Where are you?"
"Viktor has us trapped on the bridge," I said. "I need help now."
"I am ten minutes away," Sergei said. "Can you hold out?"
"I do not know," I admitted. "Irina is dying."
"Hold them off," Sergei ordered. "I am coming."
The call ended.
Ten minutes? Could we last ten minutes?
"Dimitri Volkov!" Viktor's voice boomed again. "This is your last warning!"
I looked at the driver. "What is your name?"
"Alexei sir," he replied.
My eyes widened. Alexei?
"Not you too," I muttered. "Listen Alexei, I need you to do something."
"Anything boss."
"When I get out, I want you to drive away as fast as you can," I said.
"But boss..." Alexei started.
"That is an order!" I interrupted. "Get Irina to safety. Your life depends on it."
"Yes boss," Alexei nodded.
I turned to Irina and she was crying.
"No," she whispered. "Do not leave me."
"I have to," I said. "This is the only way."
"Please," she begged. "Please do not do this."
I kissed her forehead gently.
"I love you," I whispered. "Remember that."
"Dimitri no!" She cried.
But I was already opening the door.
I stepped out of the car with my hands raised.
Viktor's men immediately surrounded me, pointing guns at my head.
"Drive!" I shouted to Alexei.
The car roared to life and shot forward.
Viktor's men started firing at it.
"No!" I yelled. "You said you would let her go!"
Viktor walked towards me, he was smiling.
"I lied," he said simply.
Rage exploded inside me.
I lunged at Viktor but his men grabbed me.
They threw me to the ground and started kicking.
I felt my ribs crack. I felt my face split open.
But I did not care, I just hoped Irina got away.
"Where are my documents?" Viktor demanded.
"Go to hell," I spat blood at his feet.
Viktor kicked me in the stomach and I coughed up more blood.
"Tell me where they are!" He roared.
"Never," I gasped.
Viktor pulled out a gun and pressed it against my head.
"Last chance Dimitri."
I closed my eyes, ready to die.
Then suddenly gunfire erupted from everywhere.
Viktor's men started falling. Bullets hitting them from all sides.
"What the..." Viktor looked around confused.
Cars appeared from every direction.
Sergei Petrov stepped out with an army of men.
"Let him go Viktor!" Sergei commanded.
"This is none of your business Sergei!" Viktor shouted.
"I am making it my business," Sergei replied.
More of Viktor's men fell. Sergei's army was too strong.
"Retreat!" Viktor ordered his men.
They all scrambled back to their cars.
Viktor looked down at me with pure hatred.
"This is not over Dimitri."
Then he ran, disappearing into one of the cars.
Sergei's men helped me up.
"Where is Irina?" Sergei asked.
"She got away," I said. "In the car."
"We need to find her," Sergei said. "She needs medical attention."
"The documents are in that car too," I added.
Sergei nodded. "My men will track it."
"Thank you," I said. "You saved my life."
"You earned it," Sergei replied. "Now let us find your wife."
We got into Sergei's car and sped off.
My whole body hurt but I did not care.
All that mattered was finding Irina.
We drove for five minutes when Sergei's phone rang.
"Yes?" He answered. "You found the car? Where?"
He listened then his face went dark.
"What?" I demanded. "What is it?"
Sergei looked at me with sad eyes.
"The car crashed," he said quietly. "Two blocks from here."
My heart stopped.
"Is she..." I could not finish the sentence.
"I do not know," Sergei said. "We need to get there now."
The car accelerated and we raced through the streets.
My hands were shaking and my chest felt tight.
Please be alive, I thought. Please please be alive.
We arrived at the crash site and I jumped out before the car even stopped.
The vehicle was wrapped around a pole.
The front was completely destroyed.
"Irina!" I shouted, running towards it.
I reached the car and looked inside.
The driver, Alexei, was dead. His neck was bent at a wrong angle.
But Irina was not in the back seat.
"Where is she?" I yelled. "Where is Irina?!"
"Boss!" One of Sergei's men called. "Over here!"
I ran towards his voice.
He was standing near an alley.
"She crawled here," he said, pointing at a blood trail.
I followed the trail into the alley.
And there she was, collapsed against a wall.
Blood covered her clothes and her eyes were closed.
"No," I whispered, dropping to my knees beside her.
I checked her pulse, it was there but very weak.
"Irina," I said. "Irina can you hear me?"
Her eyes fluttered open slightly.
"Dimitri," she whispered. "You came back."
"Of course I did," I said. "I will always come back."
"The baby," she said weakly. "Is the baby okay?"
I looked down at her stomach and froze.
There was so much blood.
"We need a doctor!" I shouted. "Now!"
Sergei appeared with a medic.
The medic knelt beside Irina and checked her.
His face went pale.
"What?" I demanded. "What is wrong?"
The medic looked at me with serious eyes.
"We need to get her to a hospital immediately," he said. "Or she will die."
