Chapter One Hundred and sixty six
But deep in my heart, I knew Logan's reassurance, though well-meaning, couldn't quell the unease rising within me. Warwick might be gone, but the Nexus… it was still out there, its power untethered and unpredictable. And with its last spark, I'd felt something-something dark and ancient-that sent chills racing down my spine.
Logan's hand lingered on mine, his warmth grounding me. I wanted to believe him, to trust in his confidence. But Mal's sharp voice cut through the air, pulling us both back to the reality we couldn't ignore.
"Wait." She straightened, her dark eyes narrowing as she glanced around the chamber. "If the Nexus rejected Warwick, why would it just disappear? Power like that doesn't dissolve into nothing unless…" Her voice trailed off, her expression tightening with realization.
Logan frowned, turning toward her. "Unless what?"
Mal's jaw clenched as she looked back at me. "Unless Warwick planned for this all along. What if… what if he used the Nexus as a doorway? A summoning?"
I froze, her words hitting me like a thunderclap. The faint vibration I'd felt beneath my skin-the lingering hum of energy-wasn't just the remnants of the Nexus. It was something deeper, a shadow stretching through the edges of reality.
"No," I whispered, taking an instinctive step back. "That can't be-"
Logan grabbed my arm, his grip firm but not harsh. "Audrey, what's wrong? What do you feel?"
"It's… it's still here." My voice was shaky now, the truth settling in. "The Nexus. It didn't reject Warwick because he was unworthy. It rejected him because he wasn't what it needed to complete the ritual." I swallowed hard, panic rising in my chest. "But I was."
Mal cursed under her breath, darting toward the altar and scanning the ruins. "If he initiated a summoning and tied it to the Nexus's power…" Her fingers traced the shattered runes, her face paling. "Damn it. This wasn't just some bid for control. He was bringing something through. Something big."
The air in the chamber grew heavier, an oppressive weight pressing down on all of us. Logan let go of my arm and stepped protectively in front of me, his instincts as a werewolf kicking in. He could feel it too-the shift in the atmosphere, the crackle of energy growing stronger by the second.
Then we heard it.
A low, rumbling growl echoed from the shadows, a sound so guttural and ancient it seemed to come from the depths of the earth itself. The chamber trembled, the remaining runes flickering as the oppressive force continued to build.
Mal backed away from the altar, her face grim. "He didn't just unleash magic," she said, her voice tight. "He unleashed something else."
The shadows pooled at the center of the room, twisting and writhing until they took on a shape-a hulking, monstrous form with glowing crimson eyes. Its presence was suffocating, radiating an aura of primal rage and chaos.
Logan let out a low growl of his own, his body shifting slightly as the wolf within him prepared for a fight. "What the hell is that?"
"The demon," I breathed, my blood running cold. "Warwick used the Nexus as a conduit to summon it. And now…"
The creature's eyes snapped to mine, and for a moment, it was as if the world stood still. Its voice was a deep, resonant snarl, echoing through the chamber like thunder.
"You… set me free," it rumbled, its gaze burning into me. "You, child of the wolf. You are bound to me now."
My knees threatened to buckle under the weight of its words. The creature's form solidified further-gleaming black scales, massive claws, and a twisted face that was both grotesque and mesmerizing. It was ancient, a relic of a time when magic and chaos ruled unchecked.
"I didn't set you free," I said, forcing my voice to stay steady even though I felt anything but. "Warwick did this-he's the one who brought you here."
The demon's laugh was a low, guttural growl that made the air vibrate. "Warwick?" It sneered, its lips curling over jagged fangs. "The worm thought he could wield power he did not understand. He was nothing. A fool. But you… you were the catalyst. Without you, his spell would have failed."
Logan stepped closer to me, his hands clenched into fists, his protective instincts flaring in the presence of such danger. "She doesn't belong to you," he growled, his voice low and threatening. "So back off."
The demon shifted its gaze to Logan, cocking its monstrous head. "Ah, the wolf," it mused, its tone almost amused. "I see you, beast. Your strength pales compared to mine. Do not test me."
Logan growled, his hazel eyes glowing as his wolf instincts pushed closer to the surface. "Try me."
Before the demon could respond, Mal spoke, her voice cutting through the tension like a blade. "Stop!" She stepped forward, her hands raised. "If you want something, tell us what it is. But don't start a fight you'll regret."
"Regret?" The demon chuckled, a deep, bone-chilling sound. "I do not regret. But you… you will all regret defying me. This world has forgotten its place, but I will remind it. My wrath will purge the weak."
The ground beneath us began to rumble, cracks splintering the stone as the demon's power rippled outward. My heart raced as I realized it wasn't bluffing-it intended to destroy everything.
I took a shaky step forward, catching the demon's attention again. "Wait!" I shouted, my voice ringing louder than I intended. "You said I was the catalyst. Fine. But if you're going to take your vengeance, you'll have to go through me first."
Logan snapped his head toward me. "Audrey, no-"
"It's me it wants, Logan," I said firmly, cutting him off. "If this thing was bound to the Nexus and the Nexus chose me… then I have to be the one to stop it."
The demon tilted its head, considering my words. For a moment, it almost seemed intrigued. "Brave words, wolf child. But you cannot stop me. No one can."
I felt the wolf inside me stir, rising to the challenge. "Maybe not," I said, my voice steadying despite the fear coursing through me. "But if you think I'm going to let you destroy everything without a fight, you're wrong."
The demon's crimson eyes locked on mine, and it let out a low growl that sent a chill through my veins. "Very well," it rumbled. "If you insist on defying me, then prove your worth. If you are strong enough to survive… perhaps I will consider sparing your world."
Logan growled again, his body taut with tension. "Audrey, don't do this."
"I have to," I whispered, glancing back at him. "This is my fight."
The demon roared, its voice shaking the chamber as it stepped closer. "Prepare yourself, child of the wolf. For now… we begin."
And then it lunged.
