Chapter 614 Can We Trust Them?

Chapter 614 Can We Trust Them?

"You?"

The on-call doctor's eyes went wide when he saw James. He never expected the person he'd run into in the elevator to be the same person he was supposed to impersonate.

That also explained how James had been able to keep up with him.

His right hand trembled, and another scalpel appeared in his grip.

"Surprised?"

James smiled. "I wasn't expecting to run into myself either."

The on-call doctor's eyes turned cold, thick with killing intent. "What you ran into is your death."

"You're no match for me. Just give yourself up."

James's face showed no emotion whatsoever.

"I don't care whether Paxton lives or dies, but I'm not taking the blame for someone else's crime."

When he'd arrived on the fifth floor, the on-call doctor and the others were already in the middle of a brawl, and then he heard someone shout that Paxton was dead.

James quickly figured out what was going on — someone had used the conflict between him and Paxton to kill Paxton, then set up Blood Medical Sect to go after him.

The on-call doctor let out a sharp breath. "You're not good enough to take me down!"

"Is that so?"

The words had barely left his mouth when James made his move — one shift, one burst forward, and in the blink of an eye he was right in the on-call doctor's face.

The sword rose and fell!

Inside, the on-call doctor cried out in shock: That's fast!

James was not only quick on his feet but even faster with his blade. Six white arcs came slashing down.

James wanted to find out who this person was and needed him alive, so he held back from going for the kill.

A flash of intensity crossed the on-call doctor's eyes. He roared and gripped his sharp scalpel tight, slashing back with rapid, consecutive strikes.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

The on-call doctor threw everything he had into blocking the sword strikes, barely managing to hold off James's relentless assault.

Their head-on exchange looked from a distance like a collision of white arcs, splitting the light and the space around them, moving at breathtaking speed.

A few falling leaves were shredded to pieces mid-air.

After blocking six of James's strikes in a row, the on-call doctor flicked out a dagger with his left hand and swung it at James's throat.

James snapped his head down, stepped back, and calmly dodged out of the way.

Then he surged forward again and thrust with his sword.

The on-call doctor blocked.

Clang!

A sharp crack rang out, and the on-call doctor's pupils shrank instantly.

He stumbled back a step and stared at his dagger in disbelief.

The blade had snapped in two, and blood was seeping through his chest.

Thud!

Before he could even process what had happened, James thrust again.

Fast as a shooting star. The on-call doctor's face changed. He threw up his other scalpel to block.

There was a sharp clang as the two blades met. A burst of pain shot through his hand.

Ding.

The scalpel snapped with a crisp crack.

The Piercing Blade came in without losing any momentum, darting straight toward his shoulder.

The on-call doctor's jaw tightened. He threw himself backward with everything he had, but still came up half a beat too slow.

The tip of the sword drove into his shoulder, sending blood spraying out.

He let out a grunt and stumbled back into the wall, his whole body aching.

Boom!

James didn't stop. He threw a punch with his left hand.

Raw power over technique!

The on-call doctor roared and crossed both arms in front of him.

"Break!"

Fist met arms.

The on-call doctor was sent flying by the punch!

Before he could even hit the ground and get up, a hand was already clamped around his throat.

"You remind me a little of Ingrid."

James said calmly, "You're with the Gonzalez Family?"

As he spoke, he slapped the on-call doctor across the face and knocked the poison out of his mouth.

The on-call doctor's eyelid twitched. He said nothing. He'd tried to bite down on the poison capsule in his mouth, but he was just a half-second too slow. All he could do was stare back at James with defiance.

"Cut the talk. If you've got the guts, just kill me."

"And don't get too smug. You've picked a fight with people you shouldn't have. You'll end up dead in the gutter sooner or later."

He held his chin up, clinging to whatever dignity he had left.

"Not talking?"

James tore off his realistic mask and looked at the scarred face underneath, smiling.

"I have plenty of ways to make you talk..."

The on-call doctor's eyes were full of contempt. He was specially trained. Getting him to talk would be harder than killing him.

"I'm a reasonable person. I won't torture you."

"But a friend of mine knows exactly how you people operate."

James patted the on-call doctor lightly on the cheek. "I hope you won't disappoint me..."

An hour later, the side hall of the Gonzalez Family estate was lit up bright.

Ulysses held a photo of his own abdomen, studying it carefully.

After leaving JZL Medical Clinic that day, he'd gone to the hospital for a thorough check-up and confirmed that the wound in his abdomen did show signs of repeated tearing.

On top of that, a good amount of the tissue inside had already gone necrotic. He needed surgery soon, or the risk of further complications would be very high.

The doctors, however, couldn't guarantee the wound would heal completely. The three-edged wound from years ago was just too unusual.

This left Ulysses in a difficult spot.

He wanted a permanent fix for the wound, but he was also worried that James might pull something and use it to hold his life over him.

But if he didn't deal with the wound, he'd keep suffering through the pain — and his life might even be at risk.

"Uncle!"

Just as Ulysses was wrestling with himself, Micah came hurrying in, clearly pleased about something.

"It worked, it worked," he said, lowering his voice. "Word just came from the hospital — Paxton's dead. James killed him."

Ulysses paused for just a moment, then his eyes lit up without him even realizing it. "You're sure Paxton's dead?"

"Dead!"

Micah nodded confidently.

"We've got quite a few of our doctors at that hospital. They confirmed Paxton was found killed in his bed."

"The police who went to investigate also confirmed it. Paxton is definitely dead. They're already getting ready to bring James in for questioning."

He pulled out his phone and brought up some photos. "I've even got pictures of Paxton's body."

Ulysses glanced at them, then gave a satisfied nod.

"Good that he's dead. Now that he's dead, things get really interesting."

He followed up with a question. "By the way, how are the people of Lumaria reacting?"

"Very worked up!"

Micah grinned. "They're all calling for revenge for Paxton. If the police weren't holding them back, they'd probably have stormed JZL Medical Clinic already."

"Blood Medical Sect got the news too. Paxton Daoji is furious — he's already on his way to Celestia, bringing that great sword of his that's nearly five feet long!"

"He should reach Stardust City by tomorrow morning."

"Paxton Daoji is not only a formidable fighter, he's also an expert in poisons, and he carries the rank of Silver Badge Physician."

"With him going after James, James is going to have a real headache on his hands."

He knew James was a tough opponent, but he was confident Paxton Daoji would give James a hard time.

Ulysses gave a small nod, and a strange gleam came into his aged eyes.

"Use our connections to make things as easy as possible for Mr. Paxton."

"When necessary, you can loosen the restrictions on how many people Blood Medical Sect can bring into Stardust City."

"After all, the more the merrier."

"Of course, the news of Valentin's recovery needs to be completely locked down. We don't want Blood Medical Sect getting cold feet."

His smile carried a meaning that went unsaid.

Micah nodded quietly. "Understood."

Ulysses suddenly asked, "Can we trust the hitman you sent?"

"Uncle, don't worry. I sent Ingrid's adopted son — Cang Lang."

Micah smiled. "He's not only reliable when it comes to getting the job done, he's solid as a person too."

He then left the side hall to go make the arrangements. Partway down the hall, he suddenly stopped, a flicker of unease crossing his face.

Paxton had been dead for over an hour now. Why hadn't Cang Lang reached out yet...
