Chapter 39 - Dean’s POV
Boy, I’m screwed. So screwed. I felt Thalia’s lips against mine and my heart thumped like crazy in my chest. And it’s not because she excited me, but because she scared the shit out of me. Sky was at the other end of the table and for sure she could see what’s happening.
I wanted to push Thalia away, but my fear paralyzed me.
The air in the room was so thick, it’s suffocating. All chatter and conversations muted the moment Thalia came in. I heard their combined gasps when Thalia locked lips with me.
Everything and everyone in the room blurred, and my attention focused on Sky. Every change in her facial expression registered on me. From the way her eyes rounded in surprise, to how her forehead creased in confusion, and how her eyes turned red. She chewed on her lips as her eyes nailed on Thalia, who twisted her body around me, oblivious to the stabbing stares of everyone around the table.
Sky’s chest heaved up and down. She must be counting to god knows what number to calm herself. Every nerve in my body wanted to run to her and comfort her but my legs felt numb. Then our eyes met. Her brown eyes tearing my heart into tiny billion pieces. The pain I saw in them was like daggers stabbing me until I bled to death.
“Sorry, Daisy. I didn’t mean to steal your spotlight, baby.” Thalia said, looking at Daisy, then at everyone in the room. Daisy rolled her eyes at her and crossed her arms in front of her chest. Her brows arched up and her lips upturned into a smirk. Daisy could be the sweetest girl in the world, but she could also be a bitch.
“I rushed here as soon as I found out. Since everyone here is dear to my and Dean’s heart, I wanted to share the good news with you all.” Thalia smiled, looking at every person in the room.
Daisy gave an exaggerated sigh and rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on,” she said in a voice louder than a whisper. Had the situation been different, she would have gotten an earful from her brother.
Typical Thalia if you asked me. She always wanted to be the center of attention. From the way she looked to the way she spoke, they were all choreographed to give the maximum attention.
“This is Daisy’s moment, so do everyone a favor and just spit out whatever you wanted to say,” Stefan said, not hiding his irritation. He even rolled his eyes before sipping on his wine.
“All right then,” Thalia said, clapping her hands and ignoring Stefan’s attitude. “Dean and I are expecting.”
“Expecting what?” spat Phil, obviously pissed off at Thalia’s intrusion.
“I’m pregnant. Six weeks. Dean, you’re going to be a dad, honey,” she shrieked and looked up at me. Her face lit up as her smile reached to her ears. She tiptoed to kiss me in the mouth, which I averted so she ended up kissing my chin.
A collective gasp came from everyone. All their eyes followed Thalia’s hand, caressing her flat stomach. I froze from where I stood when I heard what she said. I know it’s a lie because I have not touched Thalia for a long time now. My friends knew it, that’s why none of them looked thrilled. They looked like they’re ready to call Thalia’s lie.
Nothing mattered to me now but Sky. My eyes darted to her. Like me, she stood frozen in her spot. Her face was pale and there were tears rolling down her cheeks. I’m screwed, I know it.
The sound of a ringing phone cut the tension in the room. Sky blinked twice before checking her gadget. “Excuse me, I need to take this,” she murmured, then turned around and exited the room.
My foot stepped forward to follow her, but I had not yet taken two steps and Joey was already in front of me. Her palm connected to my cheek. I felt one side of my face sting, then turn numb from the impact of her slap. It was so strong, my ears rang. I deserved that.
After giving me a slap which earned a gasp from everyone in the room, she ran towards the door where Sky exited a while ago. Everyone except my friends and Daisy looked confused and surprised by what Joey had done. Even Thalia looked taken aback. Her mouth opened and her eyes rounded as she looked at me, then to the door where Sky and Joey exited.
“Who asked you to come here, Thalia?” Daisy’s voice quivered as she spoke. Her hands balled into fists.
“Sorry, baby. I did not intend to ruin your night. I just want to share the good news with everyone.”
“Enough with your lies, Thalia. Everyone here knows you and Dean were over a long time ago.” Joash spat.
Thalia held her head high and looked at everyone in the room. “Looks like I am not welcome here,” she said, feigning a pained expression. She then turned to me, “Dean, you know this child is yours,” she said for everyone to hear, then stomped out of the room.
Like hell, it’s mine. I wanted to scream but I couldn’t find my voice. I watched my world crumble in front of me.
My disbelief froze my brain. I could not believe how quickly things between Sky and I went south. We had just made love this morning. For the first time, she told me she loved me and that felt like heaven.
What the heck is wrong with you, Lysander? What are you standing there for? Go get your Sky!
I stormed out of the function hall in search of Sky. The pain in her eyes would haunt me for as long as I lived. This is all but a misunderstanding and we need to talk about it. I can still fix this.
Fear enveloped me. Every nerve in my body screamed that I’m about to lose the most important person in my life. I could feel her and Jax slowly slipping away from me. Shit, I would not let that happen. Three years. I lost three precious years looking for her.
If she run away now, I wouldn’t know where to find it. I turned Europe upside-down three years ago and did not find her. It’s a stroke of luck that our paths crossed again.
My feet stopped in their tracks when I saw her and Joey. They were sitting on a lounge chair by the infinity pool.
Joey embraced her. Without a doubt, Sky was crying her heart out to her friend.
For sure, she’d think I played her. Who wouldn’t think that? I’m so fucked. I ran my fingers through my hair as I gathered all my courage. My feet had not yet taken a step when I felt a hand grip my shoulder. It’s Stefan.
“Let them talk. Give Via time to calm down, Dean,” Stefan said, looking at the same scene I’m looking at. He offered me a cigarette, which I took. Fuck, I need this stick.
“What’s the deal with Thalia? I thought you guys were over.” Stefan puffed his smoke skyward.
“We are. You know that.”
“But you two were still fucking after the breakup.”
It wasn’t a question, so I don’t need to answer it. But he’s spot on. Thalia was my fuck buddy, but we have not had sex even before I left the States.
It’s impossible for me to father her child.
“What do I do now, Stefan? I’m screwed.”
“I don’t know, man. Is the child yours?”
“Hell, no! And I can prove that. Thalia isn’t a problem at all. Medicine is so advanced now; we can have a prenatal DNA test done. Pero si Sylvia… I don’t know what I’ll do, Stefan. I don’t want to lose them; I can’t lose them.” I looked skywards as I blinked the tears forming at the corner of my eyes.
Stefan patted me on the shoulder. We both watched how Sylvia hugged Joey.
