Chapter Thirty Four

Chapter Thirty Four
Lorena.
I woke up, my gaze searching, my hand stretching out to the people around me, and then I saw my father-in-law, Ethan, standing beside the door, his hands folded, looking very worried. At the same time, Alexander had a sad smile on his face as he sat on the bed beside me, looking at me wearily. He gently wrapped his hand around mine; his gaze was focused, as if he was trying to observe something, and then he told me something that shocked me: "Why did you do that? What if I hadn't come on time? Is that how you would have succeeded in taking your own life?"
"Taking my own life? What do you mean?"
"Don't play the victim card; I saw you walk towards the river as you were about to drown yourself to death. What the fuck were you thinking? If you are no longer interested in your daughter or me, you should have just said it rather than trying to take your own life. I'm so disgusted with you."
His words stung me as a sharp dagger pierced right through my eyes. I could feel my eyes drying up as tears formed in them, and a lump formed in my throat, making me slightly cough while trying to fight the urge not to cry, but I couldn't hold it anymore.
"Please, I need some time alone," I requested.
"That was the same thing I did, giving you something alone, and what happened next? You walked to the river, about to throw your life away. What if my father hadn't informed me on time? Is that how you would have foolishly decided to drown?"
"Enough, Alex, I said I need some time alone," I said, raising my voice. He shot daggers at me, but he didn't utter another word as he stood up and left, which made me feel slightly more uncomfortable. I'm trying as much as possible to calm my nerves, but things are not just working the way I want them to. I saw Alex take a deep breath before he left the room. I expected Ethan to follow Alex, but he stood by the door watching Mr. closely like he was trying to observe something, but not a word escaped his lips. I felt hot tears slowly slip down my cheeks, then Ethan instinctively sat on the bed and wrapped his hand around mine, almost encouraging me that he'll always be there for me, but I'm not certain anymore; I feel alone and trapped in my own world.
"Are you okay?" He asked gently as he lifted my chin for me to look at him. I felt slightly intimidated by his presence, but I just nodded my head without saying anything else. I turned to the other side and requested him to leave because I wanted some time alone. I saw him force a smile as he turned and left.
I could feel a heavy weight on my chest while pondering what was happening to me. It was something I couldn't seem to comprehend. I tried as much as possible to ignore the situation, but I couldn't help it, especially when he surprised me by leaning closer to me. He was about to kiss me.
"What are you doing?" I asked, looking at him, my mouth slightly opened in shock, not expecting him to react that way.
"I'm sorry, I just wanted..." He paused and stood as he added, "I'll be leaving; please take care of yourself." When those words left his lips, he walked out of the room, but the air suddenly felt heavy, and the atmosphere felt different.
I lay on the bed while trying to close my eyes to sleep, but I just couldn't. I kept tossing myself on the bed, back and forth, unable to sleep, not until everything changed the moment I heard a familiar voice calling out to me.
"Please save me, help me, don't let him take my life." I tried recalling the voice, but it was very difficult to do so. So I ignored it, telling myself that it was just my illusions. I closed my eyes, forcing myself to sleep, but the voice only became even louder. I was unable to hold it anymore, so I immediately climbed out of bed and dashed out of the room. The long hallway that awaits may have a familiar feeling, like I wandered the long hallway without anyone stopping me.
I swallowed a lump down my throat, my hand fidgety against the hem of my dress; I could feel my throat perched as I walked silently. The voice was becoming louder in my ears, but I couldn't take the risk of going alone, so I decided to walk towards Alexander's door. I stood there, watching with so much hope in me, believing he would be the only one to save the voice that was calling out to me. I stretched out my hand, about to knock on the door, when the faint voice of my wolf, who had been silent for a long time, gently said, "No, please don't..." I felt my body shudder, then I gently withdrew my hand before I started following the voice again, which was getting even louder as every second ticked.
I walked down to the hallway, and I found myself outside the gate. The voice kept calling me until I was standing beside a grave.
"Please open me, please." The voice said so, and without thinking twice, I started digging in the grave, my heart pounding faster than it should while wondering why I was doing that in the first place.
The ground hardened as I dug deeper, so I rushed back to the garage on the left. I frantically searched, trying to see if there was anything that would be of good use, and then I saw a shovel. Without hesitation, I ran back to the grave and dug deeper until I found a coffin. I immediately opened it, and I saw the lifeless body of Jennifer. I can't help but wonder why a lifeless body was calling out to me.
I shook her vigorously; maybe I was not hallucinating. Then I felt someone suddenly push me into the grave. I turned, and I saw Ethan, my father-in-law, with a mischievous smile well carved on his face.
"You thought your dead sister was calling out to you?" I struggled to stand up only for him to use the same shovel to shove back the sand on me after closing the coffin.
"What are you, bastard? Let go of me, please..." I begged; my voice was hoarse as I called out to him, but he ignored my desperate pleas as he continued shoving more sand, only to hear him say something that irks me.
"I have always wanted you, Lorena, but you chose my son instead of me. If I can't have you, then my son can't have you as well."
"Ethan?" I called out questioningly, not expecting that from him; suddenly I heard the voice of Alexander as it called out from a distance.
"Dad? What are you doing over there?"
"Oh son, I just came to check if the grave was well sealed," he muttered nervously.
"I personally sealed the grave myself, so you don't need to worry; just come over, and I'll send my men to properly seal it," Alex told him nonchalantly.
I opened my mouth; I was about to start screaming only for Ethan to pour out powder on the coffin. I started coughing before I eventually blacked out.
.........
"Lorena... Lorena... wake up," a voice called out. With my eyes feeling slightly heavier than they should, I managed to slightly open my eyes, and I was welcomed by darkness. I darted my eyes while trying to recall where I was and how I came here. The memories of being thrown into the coffin by Ethan flashed through like lightning. I felt a sharp pain in my head as I let out a cough.
"Thank you for coming for me, Lorena." A voice echoed in the dark, which startled me.
I tried standing up, only to feel my head bump into something, making my body unmoving, but what baffled me was how that small coffin that I saw earlier was able to fit both of us. It made cold shudders run down my spine as I started breathing so fast while hitting the coffin with all my strength, but it proved rather futile.
"You need to calm down, Lorena; what you are doing is only going to make things worse."
"Jennifer..." I called out gently, realizing who it was.
"Yes, it's me, Jennifer. I had to call out to you because you are the only one who could help me. I never knew that the people who trust more would be the ones to hurt you, so let's try to find a way out of here first."
"Y...you called me?" I stuttered.
"Yes, Lorena, I was trapped here for days with no food or water. I tried to escape several times by hitting the coffin several times, but it didn't budge. When he finally opened the coffin, I was elated, but immediately I smelled Ethan was following you. I had to pretend like I was dead by acting unmoving; if not, he'd have killed me, like the way he did the last time."
I thought for a moment; I never realized it until I remembered when I had slid the coffin open, her body was still fresh and not the pale skin of a dead person, and I can't help also recalling how the lifeless and bloody face of Jennifer was found on the ground when he had jumped from the window, but how he had managed to survive it is a mystery.
"But how are you still alive?"
"My wolf can heal internal injuries, but it mostly takes two to three days to complete the process, which means my body can be brain dead, but my wolf can still be alive, so logically it was my wolf who healed me."
"Oh, that makes sense, but it's not the time to analyze how you survived, but it's time to figure out how to leave this hellhole."
"You might find it fascinating, but there's something I have always kept secret from Lorena. It was my mother who told me to do so, because if I ever told you, there's a high chance we might not survive the torture that would come our way, so I had to do the one thing I never thought of doing, which was to hide everything from you."
"What are you saying, Jennifer? Because you are confusing me." I asked, already feeling frightened.
"We are the only ones on this planet with these wolf genetics, which makes us a rare gem. I know I should have told you sooner, but I was scared."
"What are you, Jennifer? Stop beating around the bush already."
She took a deep breath and said, "We are immortals; we can't be killed, but our bodies can.
only be brain dead for a maximum of three days."
