Chapter 41 The Rehearsal (Lucien's POV)

Chapter 41 The Rehearsal (Lucien's POV)

Convergence Hall lives up to its name… built on land that belonged to no pack when the original three split two hundred years ago, maintained by neutral third parties, used only for events requiring all packs' presence.
I've never been inside before. Most wolves haven't. This is sacred ground in the worst possible way.
"Impressive, isn't it?" Nikolai appears beside me as we approach the massive stone building. "Built to withstand supernatural warfare if necessary. Those walls are three feet thick, reinforced with blessed silver and protective wards."
"Comforting." I study the architecture… Gothic revival meets fortress, all sharp angles and narrow windows. "Nothing says 'happy wedding' like architecture designed for sieges."
"Nothing about this wedding is happy." He's blunt. "This is political theater with three hundred witnesses."
Three hundred. The number makes my stomach turn. Three hundred wolves watching Thalia marry Casimir while I stand to the side pretending to be nothing more than advisor and witness.
"How's she holding up?" He asks quietly.
"Barely." I felt her distress through the mate bond all morning. "The pregnancy symptoms are getting harder to hide. She threw up twice before breakfast. Petra is doing her best but even careful clothing can't hide much longer."
"The wedding is tomorrow." He's practical. "One more day of deception."
"And then what? Everyone realizes she's pregnant and does the math?" I'm bitter about this. "Casimir claims the baby anyway and we all pretend it's legitimate?"
"That's exactly what happens." Sorin joins us, appearing from nowhere with his unsettling habit. "I've seen the futures. Some scandal initially, then acceptance once the child is born and proves to be what the prophecies promised."
"You're very calm about my child being claimed by someone else." I'm angry despite knowing he has no power to change it.
"I'm a seer. I see what will be, not what should be." He's philosophical about it. "And what will be is that child carries three bloodlines openly, unites power that's been fragmented for centuries, and becomes either salvation or doom depending on how you raise them."
"No pressure." Nikolai mutters.
"Enormous pressure." Sorin corrects. "But you both knew that accepting this arrangement."
We enter through security that would make airports jealous. Supernatural scanning for weapons, blessed silver detection, three separate checkpoints where guards verify our identities against guest lists.
"This is excessive." I comment after the third verification.
"This is necessary." The head of security… Dragomir wolf I don't recognize… is checking something on his tablet. "We have Thornewood, Dragomir, and Voss all in one location for the first time in forty years. Any of you could decide violence is better than alliance. We're here to prevent that."
"Cheerful." But I understand his point. The tension between the three packs is explosive. One spark could ignite chaos.
Inside, the hall is breathtaking despite my emotional state. Vaulted ceilings soar fifty feet high, stained glass windows filter light into geometric patterns across marble floors, wooden pews could seat five hundred easily.
"The ceremony space." Casimir appears, looking tired but composed in formal black. "Three hundred confirmed guests. Seventy-five Thornewood, one hundred Dragomir, fifty Voss, plus seventy-five neutral territory observers and human officials required for legal marriage."
"Why human officials?" I ask.
"Because this marriage is legally binding under human law as well as pack law." He's matter-of-fact. "Thalia becomes my wife in every sense that matters. The paperwork has been filed. Tomorrow it becomes official."
The words hit like physical blows. My mate. Legally married to my cousin. In every sense that matters.
"Lucien." He's watching my face. "You accepted this arrangement. Don't fall apart now."
"I'm not falling apart." I'm lying. "Just processing."
"Process faster. Thalia arrives in ten minutes for the rehearsal and you need to look like professional advisor, not devastated mate." He's not unkind, just pragmatic. "Can you do that?"
"I can do whatever is necessary." I'm cold about it. "I've been doing it for three weeks."
"Then continue for one more day." He moves toward the altar. "After tomorrow, the worst is over. Just maintaining the arrangement, not establishing it."
I want to argue that maintaining is worse… eighteen months of watching them together, pretending everything is fine, raising my child as his heir. But he's already coordinating with the officiant, reviewing ceremony details.
Nikolai grips my shoulder. "You'll survive this."
"Will I?" I'm not certain. "Because right now it feels like dying by inches."
"That's what love feels like when circumstances are impossible." Sorin appears on my other side. "The bond ensures you feel everything she feels. Her distress becomes yours. Her resignation, yours. The only difference is you don't have pregnancy hormones making it worse."
"That's not helpful." But I'm listening.
"It's not meant to be helpful. It's meant to be accurate." He's studying his tablet. "The futures are stabilizing around tomorrow's ceremony. Barring major interference, the marriage proceeds without incident."
"And after?" I need to know.
"After is complicated. Multiple branches depending on how quickly Elara's justice is delivered, how Thalia's pregnancy progresses, how you handle the advisor role while secretly bonded." He shows me readings I don't understand. "But survivable. All the main characters survive the next eighteen months in most timelines."
"Most." I focus on that word.
"Nothing is guaranteed." He pockets the tablet. "But your odds are better than they were three weeks ago when Ravenna was threatening immediate curse activation."
"Low bar." Nikolai comments.
"But cleared nonetheless." Sorin moves away as more people arrive.
The hall fills rapidly. Dragomir wolves I recognize from the last three weeks… staff, security, administrators I've been working with in my advisor capacity. Thornewood wolves I've only seen at distance… Morrigan's inner circle, pack leadership, family members eyeing me with suspicion.
"That's him." I hear the whispered conversations. "The Voss operative. The one bonded to the bride."
"Shameless, attending like this."
"Casimir must be very confident to allow it."
I keep my expression neutral despite the comments. Professional advisor. Nothing more. Certainly not agonizing mate watching his beloved prepare to marry someone else.
Thalia arrives with Petra and Morrigan. She's wearing a simple dress for the rehearsal, blue silk that would hide the pregnancy from casual observation but I can see the slight curve now. Two more weeks and it'll be obvious to everyone.
Our eyes meet across the hall. The mate bond flares, strong enough that several nearby wolves notice and exchange meaningful looks.
"Try to be less obvious." Casimir appears beside me. "The bond is your business, but broadcasting it helps no one."
"I'm not broadcasting… "
"You're staring at her like drowning man seeing shore." He interrupts. "Control it or leave. Your choice."
I force my gaze away, focusing on architectural details instead of the woman I love. Stone archways. Stained glass. Wooden pews worn smooth by centuries of use.
Anything except Thalia moving toward the altar where she'll stand beside Casimir and practice promising her life to him.
"Alright everyone." The wedding coordinator… human woman who seems oblivious to supernatural tension… claps her hands. "Let's begin the rehearsal. Wedding party to your positions."
I'm positioned to Casimir's left as witness and advisor. Nikolai is behind me as secondary witness. Morrigan stands on Thalia's right as mother of the bride. Sorin is somewhere observing, tracking futures in real-time.
"Bride and groom to the altar." The coordinator is consulting her notes. "Let's walk through the processional first."
Thalia and Casimir take their positions. She's pale but composed. He looks like he's conducting business transaction, which I suppose he is.
The mate bond is screaming. I can feel Thalia's distress, her resignation, her desperate wish to be anywhere but here. It takes everything I have not to cross the space between us and pull her away from this farce.
"Control." Casimir murmurs beside me. "I can smell your wolf trying to surface. Control it."
I breathe carefully, forcing the wolf back down. One more day. I can maintain control for one more day.
The rehearsal proceeds with painful attention to detail. Where to stand, when to speak, how to move. The coordinator is relentless about precision… two steps here, pause for three seconds, turn at this angle.
"And now the vows." She's smiling like this is joyous occasion. "You'll face each other, hold hands, and repeat after the officiant."
Thalia and Casimir face each other. Their hands meet with clinical precision… not lovers, just contract participants.
"Repeat after me." The officiant begins. "I, Casimir Dragomir..."
"I, Casimir Dragomir..." His voice is steady.
"Take you, Thalia Thornewood..."
"Take you, Thalia Thornewood..."
"To be my lawfully wedded wife."
"To be my lawfully wedded wife."
Each word is knife in my chest. The mate bond is rioting, recognizing the wrongness of this arrangement but unable to break it. Thalia's distress bleeds through so strongly I'm dizzy with it.
"Now the bride." The officiant turns to Thalia.
"I, Thalia Thornewood..." Her voice nearly breaks.
"Take you, Casimir Dragomir..."
"Take you, Casimir Dragomir..." She's forcing the words out.
"To be my lawfully wedded husband."
She stops. Can't say it. The words literally catch in her throat as the mate bond rebels against the lie.
"Miss Thornewood?" The coordinator looks concerned. "Are you alright?"
"I… " Thalia is breathing too fast. "I need a moment."
"We can take a break… "
"No." Casimir is firm. "We continue. Thalia, look at me."
She does, golden eyes meeting his with something like desperation.
"This is a rehearsal." He keeps his voice low but everyone can hear in the echoing space. "Just words. Just practice. You can do this."
"I can't… the bond… " She's shaking now.
"The bond recognizes I'm not actually your mate. We established this weeks ago." He's patient but implacable. "It's protesting the performance, not the reality. Separate them. Say the words."
She closes her eyes. When she opens them, something has shifted… steely determination replacing panic.
"To be my lawfully wedded husband." The words come out steady despite the cost.
The mate bond screams. I feel it like tearing inside my chest, the wrongness of hearing her promise herself to someone else even in rehearsal.
"Excellent." The coordinator is oblivious. "Now we'll practice the ring exchange..."
I stop listening. Can't focus through the pain bleeding from Thalia through the bond. Can't process watching this horrible performance while pretending to be nothing more than witness.
"Lucien." Nikolai's hand on my shoulder grounds me. "Breathe. You're hyperventilating."
Am I? I focus on breathing… in for four counts, hold for four, out for four. The technique steadies me enough to function.
The rehearsal continues. Ring exchange practiced with temporary bands. First kiss as married couple… thankfully just discussed, not demonstrated. The recessional where they'll walk out as husband and wife.
Finally, mercifully, the coordinator declares them finished with the main ceremony.
"Excellent work everyone." She's making notes. "Tomorrow at six PM, we'll do this for real. Please arrive by five for final preparations."
The wedding party disperses. Thalia moves toward me instinctively before catching herself. We can't be seen together privately. Not here. Not with three hundred witnesses arriving tomorrow.
"Thalia." Morrigan intercepts her. "We need to discuss the reception details."
She's pulled away before we can speak. The mate bond stretches painfully as distance increases.
"That was brutal." Nikolai says quietly.
"That was practice." I'm hollow. "Tomorrow will be worse."
"Tomorrow will be final." Sorin approaches with his tablet. "After which the arrangement is established and you're simply maintaining it. Psychologically different from the initial commitment."
"You think that makes it easier?" I'm skeptical.
"I think it changes the nature of the suffering from acute to chronic." He's honest. "Acute is more intense. Chronic is more sustainable. Neither is pleasant but one allows survival."
"Cheerful." I start toward the exit. "I need air before Ravenna arrives for the pack meetings."
"She's already here." Sorin stops me. "Arrived during the rehearsal. Waiting in the west wing with her delegation."
Of course she is. Because this day can't get worse without adding my mother and her fury over my betrayal.
"I should pay respects." I'm dreading this. "As Dragomir advisor, it's expected."
"As her son, it's complicated." Nikolai corrects. "Want backup?"
"No. This I do alone." I head toward the west wing where Voss delegation is gathering.
