Chapter 33 Morrigan's Rage (Thalia's POV)
Chapter 33 Morrigan's Rage (Thalia's POV)
The banging on the door starts before dawn.
"Thalia! Open this door right now!" Morrigan's voice carries through the wood, sharp enough to cut glass.
Morrigan's voice escalates. "I will break down this door, Thalia! Do not test me!"
I open it before she can make good on the threat.
She stands in the hallway, still in her dressing gown, hair loose around her shoulders… I've never seen her this disheveled. Her face is white with fury, eyes blazing ice-blue, the scent of rage so strong it's nearly overwhelming.
"You." The word is barely controlled. "Inside. Now."
She shoves past me into the guest room, whirling to face me as I close the door. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"
"Completed a mate bond with the person I love." I keep my voice steady. "Yes, I'm aware."
"The power surge was felt across the entire city!" She's shouting now, all composure shattered. "Every Alpha in London knows you bonded to a Voss wolf! Every pack member is asking questions I can't answer! You've embarrassed the Thornewood name, endangered the alliance, and destroyed years of careful planning!"
"I've claimed my mate." I don't back down. "Which is my right as a wolf."
"Your right?" She laughs, the sound bitter and sharp. "You have no rights beyond what pack law grants you! You are Thornewood heir, not some common wolf who can bond with whomever strikes her fancy!"
"I'm also a person who deserves to make her own choices."
"Choices?" Her voice rises another octave. "You think you're making choices? You're being manipulated by Convergence power you don't understand, bonding with a wolf sent to assassinate you, broadcasting your stupidity across half of Britain!"
"I'm not being manipulated… "
"You completed a bond that caused seismographs to register the event!" She's in my face now, too close, invading my space with aggression that makes my wolf bristle. "That level of power should be impossible! But you're Convergence, so impossible is just Tuesday for you, isn't it?"
"Step back." The words come out with more force than intended.
She doesn't. "Or what? You'll use your abilities on me? Prove my point that you can't control them?"
"I said step back." Louder now, my wolf pushing forward.
"Make me." The challenge is deliberate. "Show me what your precious mate bond has turned you into. Show me the power you've been hiding… "
"BACK." The command erupts from me with physical force.
Golden light flares from my eyes. The air crackles with energy. And Morrigan stumbles backward three steps before catching herself against the wall, eyes wide with shock.
Silence falls heavy and absolute.
"Don't." I'm breathing hard, wolf very close to the surface. "Don't push me, Mother. I'm trying to be civil despite your rage. But I will not be bullied in my own space."
She stares at me like she's seeing a stranger. "You just... you commanded me."
"Yes." I don't apologize. "You got too close, too aggressive. My wolf responded."
"Your wolf." She's still staring. "Thalia, your eyes are golden. Completely golden. There's no white, no iris. Just pure gold."
I move to the mirror. She's right… my eyes are molten amber-gold, glowing faintly, no trace of hazel remaining. "The bond completion changed things."
"Changed things?" Her voice is faint now. "You're not human anymore. You're not even wolf anymore. You're something else entirely."
"I'm Convergence." I turn to face her. "This is what I've always been underneath the suppressants. You knew this was coming."
"Knowing and seeing are different." She sinks onto the bed, looking older suddenly. "I felt the power surge last night. Every Wolf in London felt it. And I knew… I knew you'd completed the bond despite my warnings, despite everything I told you about Convergence wolves and mate bonds and control."
"Your warnings were about manipulation that isn't happening." I move to sit in the chair across from her, maintaining distance. "The bond is real, Mother. Not manufactured. Not Convergence power distorting perception. Real and genuine and exactly what it's supposed to be."
"You can't know that… "
"I can." I tap my chest. "I can feel everything Lucien feels now. His emotions, his thoughts, his absolute certainty that what we have is genuine. There's no manipulation in that connection. Just love and commitment and choosing each other despite impossible circumstances."
She's quiet for a long moment, studying me with eyes that see too much. "You look different. Not just the eyes. Everything about you has changed."
"I'm not suppressed anymore." I hold her gaze steadily. "For the first time in my life, I'm completely myself. Wolf and human and Convergence all integrated into one person. This is me, Mother. This has always been me. You just kept me locked away."
"To protect you… "
"To control me." I interrupt. "Let's be honest about what it was. Protection would have involved teaching me control, helping me develop abilities safely, trusting me to be better than Eleanora. Control was poisoning me for fourteen years and lying about it."
Her face crumples slightly. "I did what I thought was necessary… "
"You did what fear told you to do." I lean forward. "And I understand that fear. I've read about Eleanora. I know about the civil war, the enslavement, the thousands who died. I know why you were terrified. But your fear doesn't justify what you did to me."
"What would you have had me do?" The question is anguished. "Watch you develop abilities that killed thousands last time? Hope you'd be different despite all evidence suggesting otherwise? Gamble thousands of lives on maternal optimism?"
"You could have trusted me." The words come out softer than intended. "You could have raised me knowing what I was. Could have taught me the dangers, the history, the responsibility that comes with this power. Could have believed I could choose to be better."
"Trust isn't enough when the stakes are that high." She's shaking now. "You don't understand what Eleanora became. What the power did to her. She started exactly like you… noble intentions, genuine love, commitment to doing good. And within three years she was enslaving wolves and executing anyone who questioned her authority."
"I'm not her." I say it firmly. "I'm me. Different person, different circumstances, different choices."
"Are you?" She stands, pacing now. "Because from where I'm standing, you're following her pattern perfectly. Completing a mate bond that demonstrates unprecedented power. Claiming autonomy over pack authority. Standing up to your Alpha with command voice that forces compliance. These are exactly the early signs Eleanora showed."
"Or these are signs of a healthy wolf claiming her right to self-determination." I counter. "Not everything is a harbinger of tyranny, Mother. Sometimes wolves just want to live their lives."
"Not Convergence wolves." She whirls to face me. "That's what you refuse to understand! You're not 'just a wolf' who wants to live quietly. You're a weapon with the power to reshape the entire werewolf world. And weapons don't get to choose neutrality."
"Watch me." I stand as well. "I'm going to marry Casimir as planned. I'm going to help Lucien counter the blood curse. I'm going to develop my abilities with Dragomir resources. And I'm going to do all of it on my terms, not yours, not Casimir's, not anyone's but mine."
"You're going to what?" She's staring again. "You're still marrying Casimir? After completing the bond to Lucien?"
"Yes." I explain the strategic reasoning… saving Lucien's family, satisfying political requirements, gaining resources, maintaining the mate bond privately while fulfilling public obligations.
She listens in silence. When I finish, she looks almost impressed. "That's... remarkably calculated."
"I learned from the best manipulator I know." I don't make it a compliment.
She flinches but doesn't deny it. "Casimir agreed to this arrangement?"
"He proposed it yesterday. I'm meeting him this afternoon to finalize terms." I check my phone. Still hours before the two PM meeting. "The completed bond doesn't change the fundamental agreement."
"It changes everything." She's pacing again. "Public opinion, pack dynamics, how other Alphas view the alliance. You can't just bond to a Voss operative and expect everyone to accept a political marriage to Dragomir."
"Casimir seems to think we can." I'm calm despite her agitation. "He sent a message this morning confirming the arrangement stands."
"Casimir is dying and desperate." She stops pacing. "He'll agree to anything if it secures his legacy before the genetic condition kills him. But the rest of the pack world won't be so accommodating."
"Then they'll adjust." I move toward the door. "I'm done apologizing for choices that serve multiple purposes. Done hiding who I am to make other people comfortable. Done being controlled by fear of what might happen."
"Thalia… " She reaches for my arm.
I step back smoothly, keeping distance. "Don't grab me, Mother. My wolf is very close to the surface right now and she doesn't appreciate aggression."
Morrigan drops her hand. "I'm your mother. Not your enemy."
"You've been both." The honesty is brutal but necessary. "You raised me with love while systematically poisoning me. Protected me with one hand while controlling me with the other. I don't know how to reconcile those contradictions."
"I did what I thought was right… "
"You did what fear told you to do." I repeat. "And I understand. I even forgive you eventually, probably. But right now I need distance from you and your terror and your absolute certainty that I'm doomed to fail."
"I'm not certain you'll fail." Her voice is small. "I'm terrified you'll succeed and that success will cost everything I've tried to protect."
"Then trust that I'm smart enough to avoid Eleanora's mistakes." I open the door. "Or don't. But either way, stop trying to control me. It's not working anymore."
"Where are you going?"
"To shower. To eat breakfast. To prepare for the meeting with Casimir." I pause in the doorway. "And to message Lucien that I'm alright because the mate bond is broadcasting my stress and he's probably climbing the walls with worry."
"You're really in love with him." It's not a question.
"Completely." I don't hide it. "He's my mate, Mother. The bond isn't something I chose intellectually. It's something fundamental and right and absolutely certain. Fighting it would be like fighting gravity."
"Eleanora said the exact same thing about her mate." Morrigan's voice is barely audible. "Right before she started using him to consolidate power."
"Then I'll be different." I step into the hallway. "Watch me prove it."
I close the door before she can respond, leaving her alone with her fears and her certainty that I'm following Eleanora's path.
Maybe I am. Maybe every Convergence follows the same pattern and I'm deluding myself thinking I can be different.
Or maybe I'm strong enough to choose another path entirely.
I head to the bathroom, stripping off clothes and stepping into hot water that feels like luxury after last night's chaos. The mate bond hums beneath my ribs, Lucien's presence constant even though he's miles away.
I send through the connection: "Morrigan and I fought. I'm fine. She's terrified. Nothing changed."
His response comes immediately, warm and concerned: "Want me to come back?"
"No. Stay safe. I'll see you tonight after the Casimir meeting."
"I love you."
"Love you too."
The shower helps clear my head. By the time I'm dressed and heading to the kitchen, I feel more centered.
Petra appears as I'm pouring coffee. "Miss Thornewood. Your mother asked me to inform you that she's cancelled all public appearances for the day to manage the fallout from last night's... incident."
"The mate bond completion." I don't sugarcoat it. "Everyone knows, Petra. No point calling it an incident."
She nods, looking uncomfortable. "Several pack members have been calling. Asking questions about protocol, whether the alliance is still valid, how to address you now that you're bonded to… "
"To Lucien Voss." I supply. "My mate. You can say it."
"To Lucien Voss." She repeats carefully. "There's confusion about whether you'll be Dragomir or Voss after the marriage."
"Dragomir legally, Voss emotionally." I sip coffee. "It's complicated but manageable. Tell anyone who asks that the alliance proceeds as planned and my personal life doesn't affect political arrangements."
"That's what your mother said to tell them." Petra looks relieved. "I'm glad you're in agreement on that at least."
"On that one thing, yes." I finish the coffee. "I need to review documents before the Casimir meeting. Can you make sure I'm not disturbed?"
"Of course." She hesitates. "Miss Thornewood? Are you... alright? The power surge last night was felt throughout the building. Everyone is concerned."
"I'm perfect." And I mean it. "For the first time in my life, I'm exactly who I'm supposed to be."
She nods slowly, studying my face. "Your eyes are different."
"Yes." I don't elaborate.
"They're beautiful." She says it quietly. "Intimidating, but beautiful."
The compliment surprises me. "Thank you, Petra."
She leaves, closing the door softly. I'm alone with coffee and the weight of choices made and choices still coming.
My phone shows messages from Sorin: "Congratulations on the completed bond. The futures shifted dramatically. We should discuss what I'm seeing. - S"
And from Nikolai: "You two broke my safe house. I'm impressed and also sending you the repair bill. Seriously though, unprecedented power readings. When you have time, I want to discuss the energy signatures. - N"
I respond to both, promising conversations later. Right now I need to focus on the Casimir meeting in… I check the time… four hours.
Four hours to prepare for negotiating a marriage while bonded to someone else. Four hours to steel myself for whatever complications the completed bond has created. Four hours to become the person who can navigate impossible situations with grace and strategy.
I pull out my laptop, opening the preliminary agreement Casimir sent yesterday. Read through it carefully, noting where adjustments might be needed given the completed bond.
The terms still serve everyone's purposes. Casimir gets his legacy, I get freedom from Morrigan and resources to develop abilities, Lucien's family gets protected. The bond completion doesn't fundamentally change that calculus.
It just makes everything more complicated emotionally.
But I've been handling complicated for weeks now. I can handle this too.
My wolf stirs, confident and certain. She's not afraid of Casimir or Morrigan or pack politics. She knows what she wants… her mate, her freedom, her right to choose.
And she's not backing down.
Neither am I.
