Chapter 889 The Last Supper

Chapter 889 The Last Supper

Rita's calm vibe hit Evan hard, making him realize he was out of chances.

The damage was done, and no matter how much he tried to fix things, he couldn't mend her broken heart.

He grabbed the glass of wine she poured and downed it in one go. "Rita, I'm sorry!"

If he could turn back time, he'd never hurt her again. But life didn't work that way.

Rita didn't even glance at him. She refilled his glass and pointed to the appetizers on the table. "The beef's from my farm, and the fish is from my pond. Give them a try."

Years ago, when they first got together, Rita and Evan would cook during her vacations.

Neither of them knew much about cooking, so their dishes were usually a disaster.

But because they made them together, no matter how bad they tasted, they always finished them.

Those times were beautiful but short-lived.

Now, with all the pressures of life, Rita had become a skilled cook.

Just by looking at the dishes, he knew they wouldn't taste bad, but he was scared to eat this meal. He knew it marked the official end of their marriage.

He thought he could delay it a bit longer.

Seeing him hesitate, Rita finally looked at him, their eyes meeting. "Evan, are you so used to fancy food that you can't appreciate simple stuff?"

"No." Evan's hand shook as he picked up a piece of beef and put it in his mouth, chewing slowly. "It's really tender, and it tastes great."

Rita said, "Try the fish too."

Evan took a bite of the fish. "The fish is good too."

Rita raised her glass. "Shall we toast?"

Evan hesitated but eventually clinked his glass with hers.

Rita drank her glass in one gulp, and Evan had no choice but to follow.

After two glasses of wine, Evan's voice was hoarse, and he could only repeat, "Rita, I'm really sorry!"

Rita still didn't respond and poured herself another glass of wine.

Evan reached out, wanting to stop her, but seeing the distant look in her eyes, his hand froze in mid-air. "You don't handle alcohol well, drink less," he said.

Rita downed the glass in one go again. "Who says I don't handle alcohol well? Running a farm by myself all these years hasn't been easy. I've built up my tolerance."

For a woman to settle down in a strange place, it must have been tough.

Only she knew the hardships she had endured.

Thinking about the suffering she had gone through, Evan could only say, "Rita, I'm sorry!"

Rita smiled. "Evan, I accept your apology, and I forgive you."

Evan wished she would scold him, tell him she would never accept his apology, and say she would never forgive him.

That would prove that she still cared about him, even a little.

But her easy forgiveness proved that she no longer cared about him.

It proved that the things he did to hurt her no longer mattered to her.

Evan felt immense pain but was powerless to change anything.

Rita continued, "I'm no longer the timid Rita I used to be, and you're not the Evan I once knew. But my thoughts have never changed; I want to live well, happily, freely, and with dignity."

Evan opened his mouth but couldn't say a word.

Rita looked at him. "Evan, are you willing to give me this chance?"

Her tone was still very calm, as if she wouldn't care even if he said no.

He definitely couldn't say no.

He realized too late that loving someone wasn't about owning them but about wanting them to live their best life.

This time, he raised his glass first. "I hope all your future days are filled with happiness and joy."

Rita raised her glass too. "Thank you. I genuinely hope you find someone to share your life with."

The person he wanted to share his life with had always been her.

During the three years she was presumed dead, he clung to the hope that she might still be alive, searching for her everywhere. Otherwise, he might not have held on.

'Rita, how I wish you could give me another chance,' Evan's heart screamed, but he couldn't say it out loud.

He could only hide his bitterness and forced a smile. "Has anyone pursued you in recent years?"

Rita said, "Of course, I'm beautiful, I have a stable job, and I own a farm. Plenty of people want to pursue me."

Evan said, "There were many guys pursuing you back in school too. I still remember the day of the basketball game when a guy confessed to you."

Rita said, "You have such a good memory. For some reason, my memory is terrible. I can't remember many things from the past clearly. Sometimes it feels like some things happened in a previous life, so distant."

Evan felt another stab of pain in his heart. It was because of the deep hurt he caused her that her memory had deteriorated.

He wanted to ask if she remembered Evelyn but didn't dare to.

Out of guilt, he had taken good care of Evelyn.

Now, Evelyn was studying at Girona University, majoring in a subject she loved.

Evelyn had grown from a little girl into a graceful young woman. She was now a junior and would graduate in just over a year.

Evelyn studied as diligently as Rita and looked almost identical to how Rita looked back then.

Sometimes, looking at her, Evan would think of how Rita had to drop out of school in her junior year because of him.

What he did to Rita was more despicable than those of a beast.

Rita said, "Why aren't you talking? If you don't want to talk, just eat. Everything is organic from my farm, so eat without worry."

Evan exhaled and asked, "With so many suitors, is there anyone you like?"

Rita smiled. "Do you want to hear the truth?"

Evan nodded.

Rita gave him an answer. "I'm scared."

She didn't say what she was scared of, but Evan understood.

After being so deeply hurt by a man, how could she dare to like another man?

The intense pain stabbed Evan's heart wave after wave.

He exhaled forcefully, not daring to look at her, and turned to look outside. "It's thundering; it might rain."

Rita said, "Yes, rain is good. Only after the rain can you see the rainbow."

At night, there were no rainbows. She was talking about her own life.

Evan clenched his fists tightly and then relaxed. "I should go now. If it rains heavily, I might not be able to leave."

Rita said, "Yes, be safe."

Evan stood up, took a few steps towards the door, and then stopped.

He turned to look at her, and no matter how hard he tried to control it, tears welled up in his eyes. "Rita, can I hug you one more time?"

Rita opened her arms generously. "Of course."

Evan walked towards her, carefully opened his arms, and embraced her.

The familiar scent surrounded him, making him reluctant to let go, but he had to. "Rita, take care."

Rita smiled, "You too."

Evan turned and walked out with stumbling steps.

Rita watched his back, and tears unknowingly rolled down her cheeks.
