Chapter 887 Love Her

Chapter 887 Love Her

Good friends hanging out, eating, drinking, and having a blast always made time fly.

Before they knew it, it was already late at night.

But the three of them had so much to talk about that none of them wanted to call it a night.

So, Rita decided to let Chloe and Phyllis crash at her place; they could all fit on her big bed if they squeezed in a bit.

Chloe had just finished washing her face when her phone buzzed with a new message.

Phyllis, lounging in her chair, lazily said, "I knew he wouldn't want you staying out. He's probably checking up on you."

Chloe, a bit tipsy, couldn't be bothered to move. "I don't care who's messaging me tonight; I'm staying here with Rita."

Rita walked over, picked up the phone, and handed it to Chloe. "Even if you're staying here, you should at least let him know so he doesn't worry."

Chloe snorted, "I don't want to deal with him."

Rita asked, "Did you guys have a fight?"

Chloe replied, "I wish we could fight."

Rita said, "What do you mean, 'wish you could fight'?"

Chloe pouted, feeling a bit upset. "He always puts me first, never thinks about himself. His work stress is way more than mine, and I don't even make a fraction of what he earns in a month, but he never lets me worry about taking care of Jacob. And also..."

Before Chloe could finish, Phyllis interrupted, "Chloe, how do you always manage to show your affection?"

Chloe said, "I'm not. I feel bad for him. I've told him countless times to be a little selfish, but he just won't listen."

Rita raised her hand to ruffle Chloe's hair. "I've known Mr. Harrison longer than any of you. Want to hear my take on him?"

Chloe sat up quickly. "Go ahead."

Rita said, "Mr. Harrison is truly a wonderful person. It's not just about providing a comfortable life; he supports your career too. Many men, especially those who are insecure and controlling, want to lock their wives at home after marriage, treating them like free maids."

Rita continued, "Housewives sacrifice their careers for the family, worry about everything at home, and get exhausted, yet they don't receive the respect they deserve. There are still many people in society who think housewives don't contribute financially and just play at home all day. Just this one point makes him better than many others."

Chloe knew how good Luke was, and the more she knew, the more she felt for him. "But sometimes I wish he wasn't so good."

Phyllis said, "Do you think men like Charlie and Evan are better?"

That one sentence made everyone fall silent.

Especially Rita, who trembled just hearing the name "Evan."

Phyllis, realizing she had mentioned Evan, quickly glanced at Chloe. Chloe immediately took hold of Rita's hand. "Rita, don't be scared. He shouldn't be able to find you here."

Rita smiled. "I don't care if he comes or not anymore. If he wants to drag me back, let him try. I've had three years of freedom; it's been worth it."

These words were clearly heard by Evan, who was in the cabin.

In an instant, he felt his blood run cold.

Even before finding Rita, he knew she wouldn't willingly go back with him.

He knew she wished he believed she had perished in that fire, leaving nothing behind.

But hearing her say it out loud was like a dagger stabbing straight into his heart.

A large hand gently patted his back. He turned around and saw who it was.

Luke gave him a look that said, "follow me," and then walked ahead.

Once they were out of the farmhouse's range, Evan asked, "Why are you here?"

Luke looked towards the distant cabin. "I wasn't comfortable with Chloe coming to such a remote place alone, so I followed her quietly. I won't disturb her time with her friends; I just need to make sure she's safe."

Evan gave a bitter smile. "We used to say you didn't know how to love, but it turns out you're the best at it among us."

Luke said, "What about you? Are you still thinking of dragging Rita back?"

Evan replied, "Using your words, I just need to know she's alive and well. I don't dare hope she'll come back to me."

Luke said, "It's good that you understand."

Evan looked at the distant cabin, where the lights were still on, indicating the three were still chatting.

After staring for a long time, he finally spoke slowly. "Vincent, do you think I still have a chance?"

Luke said, "I personally believe that loving someone doesn't mean possessing them; it means wanting them to be happy. If we can't give them happiness, we should have the courage to let go and let them find their own happiness."

Evan said, "Back then, when you thought you didn't have much time left, you pushed Chloe away. Do you think she was happy during that time away from you?"

Luke replied, "Our situation is different from yours. Think it over. But loving someone means loving them well. Marriage doesn't give you the right to harm her."

Evan had indeed taken advantage of being married to Rita, of her being his lawful wife, and had done many hurtful things over the years.

Under the guise of love, he had used the most cruel methods to hurt her. How was he any different from those abusive men?

Evan started coughing violently again.

Luke patted his back. "Go see a doctor."

Evan said, "Even if I died in front of her, she probably wouldn't feel sad."

Luke raised an eyebrow. "Life is precious. Don't try to test anyone with your life."

Evan smiled again. "You always see right through me. Don't worry; I won't pressure her anymore. Knowing she's alive and being able to watch her from afar, what more could I ask for?"

Luke's phone suddenly rang.

He took it out and saw it was Chloe calling back. He immediately answered, "Hello, Chloe."

Chloe's slightly drunken, soft voice came through the phone. "Luke, I won't be home for a couple of days. Don't worry about me."

Luke nodded. "Okay."

Chloe asked, "Is Jacob with you? I want to hear his voice."

Luke said, "It's the middle of the night; he's already asleep."

Chloe paused. "Honey..."

Luke felt a warmth in his heart. "I'm here."

Chloe said, "I'm not home, so take good care of yourself."

Luke smiled. "I will."

Chloe said, "Honey..."

Luke replied, "Yes?"

Chloe said, "It's only been a day, but I miss you so much. I miss your embrace, your kisses. But you're not here with me. What should I do?"
