Chapter 873 Misunderstanding

Chapter 873 Misunderstanding

They had both agreed to break off the engagement, so why was he so mad now that Rita brought it up? Evan was losing it, and that was totally out of character for him.

Evan quickly pulled himself together. "I don't know much about the music biz. You should find someone who does, so you don't get ripped off."

Rita replied, "Saul, the guy you introduced me to, knows his stuff. I just write and compose; he handles the rest."

Evan shot her a look. "You little dummy."

Rita whispered, "Why are you calling me names again?"

Evan sighed, "In this world, when it comes to money, trust no one completely. Saul's in the music industry. I saw your talent and hooked you up with his studio. But I didn't expect you to blow up like this, with every song becoming a hit."

Rita asked, "So what?"

Evan poked her forehead gently. "You only think about working and making money. Don't you ever think about making more?"

Rita shrugged, "I'm making good money now, and I'm happy with it. Sure, I want more, but I'll take it one step at a time."

Evan rolled his eyes. "Compared to an average worker, you're doing great. But do you know Saul's making even more off your work?"

Rita said, "We have a contract to split the profits 50-50 after costs. If I make $500,000, he should make $500,000 too."

Evan was exasperated. "You're such a fool!"

Rita huffed, "If you keep insulting me, I'm done talking to you."

By then, they had arrived at their destination.

Evan parked the car. "As a friend, let me give you some advice."

Rita's eyes lit up. "You consider me a friend?"

Evan said, "Why not?"

Rita smiled. "After spending a few months with you, I think you're actually a pretty good person. I'm happy to be your friend."

Evan said, "Don't butter me up."

Rita said, "It's not flattery; you really are a good person." At least, better than her family.

Evan didn't need her validation. "I'm not a good person. I can do all sorts of terrible things."

Rita understood Evan's actions. Growing up in a dangerous family, he might have to act tough to protect himself and those he cared about.

"Evan, what are you two up to? You're supposed to be engaged, but now you're acting like friends?" Charlie's teasing voice came from outside the car window.

Rita looked up to see Charlie standing beside the car, grinning.

Evan got out of the car. "You're early today."

Charlie said, "You wanted to talk, so I came early."

Evan looked at Rita, who had just gotten out of the car. "Do you remember him?"

Rita said, "Hello, Mr. Langley."

Charlie said, "Just call me Charlie, no need to be so formal."

Rita said, "Okay."

Evan asked, "Did you win over your crush?"

Charlie smirked, "That's a secret."

Evan shot back, "So you haven't."

Charlie shrugged, "When I decide to go after someone, there's no girl I can't win over. But the timing's not right yet, so I haven't started."

Evan asked, "Because of the Harper family?"

Charlie nodded. "Yeah, the Harpers want to marry their daughter to me, and my family's all for it. But I've told them I won't marry someone I don't love."

Rita stayed quiet. She didn't expect Charlie to have the same kind of problems she and Evan did.

It seemed like the richer the family, the more they pushed for arranged marriages to boost their status, leaving no room for personal choice.

Charlie seemed to read her mind. "Rita, my situation's different from yours and Evan's. Don't lump us together."

Evan looked at Rita and suddenly said, "I don't have another girl I like."

Rita just said, "Okay."

Charlie laughed, "Evan, taking over the Smith Group is tough, and winning over a girl seems just as hard. You need to step up your game."

Evan glared at him, "My personal life is none of your business. I called you here to talk about the music industry."

The Langley Group was big in film and entertainment, and Charlie had taken over a company in that field at a young age. Evan wanted his help to maximize Rita's interests.

Charlie said, "Do you know how busy I am? Do you know how many people want to see me but can't?"

Evan said, "So?"

Charlie grinned, "I'm swamped, but one call from you and I came all the way from Lunaris. See how important you are to me."

Evan rolled his eyes, "Don't say such gross things."

Charlie turned to Rita, "Don't worry, Rita. Evan and I are just regular friends. Nothing shady going on."

Rita hadn't thought that way, but now that he mentioned it, she started to wonder.

She widened her eyes and looked at both of them, gasping, "You two..."

She seemed to have stumbled upon something big. "Society's pretty open now. Whether you're straight or gay, there's no judgment. Don't worry, I won't spread rumors. If you need, I can help you keep it under wraps."

Evan felt like smacking her. "What nonsense are you thinking? We're just friends, nothing like what you're imagining."

Charlie, always the troublemaker, said, "Evan, Rita's willing to cover for us. Just tell the truth."

Evan snapped, "Charlie!"

Charlie teased, "Evan, don't you love me anymore?"

Evan warned, "Say one more word, and I'll make sure your crush misunderstands you in the future as well."

Charlie caught the hint, "So Rita is your crush?"

Rita was startled and waved her hands, "Mr. Langley, don't get the wrong idea. There's really nothing between Evan and me. Our engagement was arranged by our families; we had no choice. You are his true love."

Evan's face turned red with anger.

Charlie laughed heartily as he said, "Rita, you're too good. If I end up with Evan, I'll definitely thank you for making it happen."
