Chapter 19 The Hunt Begins

Chapter 19 The Hunt Begins
The morning sun barely touched the city when Lucas and Lucy returned to the Bravata safe house.

The air inside was thick with quiet tension—Emily safe, Sarah secured, but the lingering threat of Mercer’s network hung like smoke.

Lucas didn’t speak immediately.

Instead, he paced the room, eyes scanning every corner, every exit, every potential angle of attack.

Lucy followed him silently, every nerve on high alert.

Finally, he stopped, spinning on his heel to face her.

“Are you ready for this?” His voice was sharp, controlled, but there was an edge—fear tempered by fury.

Lucy nodded, even though her stomach twisted. “I’m ready. For Emily. For everyone else. For you.”

He studied her, something flickering behind his dark eyes—a mix of admiration, longing, and the quiet knowledge that she’d risk herself without hesitation.

“You have no idea what this will cost,” he said quietly. “You’ve already seen enough of my world. Once we go after Mercer, there’s no turning back.”

“I know,” she replied. “But I can’t sit here while he hides and hurts people. Not after tonight.”

Lucas exhaled slowly, running a hand over his face. “You’re incredible, Lucy. I don’t say it enough, but… you’re incredible. And dangerous.”

She smirked, despite the tension. “I get that a lot.”

“Don’t forget—dangerous is why I can’t let you out of my sight again.”

Her heart skipped. “Noted.”

PLANNING THE ATTACK

Lucas gathered his men. Maps, files, intel reports—all laid across the large table in the safe house. The Bravata team worked quickly, dissecting every known Mercer location, tracing shipping routes, and analyzing patterns in the last few months.

Lucy hovered beside Lucas, pointing out possible weak spots in the network—small details no one else had noticed.

Lucas listened intently, occasionally brushing back her hair as she leaned over the table.

“You’re amazing at this,” he murmured, almost to himself.

“I told you I’m useful,” she said, smirking despite the grim subject.

He chuckled, dark and low. “You are. More than you know.”

Their eyes met for a brief second—full of unspoken tension.

Dangerous tension.

The kind that burned beneath the skin.

Lucas cleared his throat, breaking the moment. “Focus. Mercer won’t wait, and neither can we. I want locations mapped, exit strategies planned, and contingencies ready. You’re coming with me on the first strike.”

Lucy’s stomach flipped. “I thought I was staying behind.”

“You’re not staying behind,” he said firmly. “Not this time. You saved Emily. You’re part of this fight. And I’m not letting anything happen to you while I take this network down.”

She felt a mix of fear and adrenaline surge through her veins. “Fine,” she said. “But if I die, you’re responsible.”

Lucas smirked, leaning in just slightly. “I’ll gladly take responsibility. As long as you come back to me.”

Her pulse quickened.

THE NIGHT BEFORE
That evening, Lucy couldn’t sleep. The thought of the upcoming mission, the danger, Mercer’s network—it all gnawed at her.

Lucas noticed immediately.

He didn’t say anything, just climbed into the guest room, sitting at the edge of the bed, silent but present.

“You should sleep,” he said softly.

“I can’t,” she admitted. “I keep thinking about… everything.”

He reached over, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You’re not alone,” he murmured. “Whatever happens tomorrow, we do it together.”

Her heart lurched. She wanted to lean into him, wanted to feel the comfort of his arms, but danger was coming—and the line between their personal bond and the fight they were about to face was razor-thin.

“I don’t want you to—” she began.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he interrupted gently.

“I promise.”

The words were simple, but they carried the weight of steel.

Lucy exhaled, resting her head on her hand.

“Promise?”

“Promise,” he said, voice low and firm. “And Lucy?”

She looked up.

“I’m not letting anyone—anyone—hurt you. Not Mercer. Not his men. Not even me, if it comes to it.”

Her chest tightened. “Lucas…”

“I mean it,” he said, brushing her cheek with his thumb. “Sleep. We need you ready.”

Lucy closed her eyes, letting the heat of his presence lull her, even as fear churned in her stomach.

She knew tomorrow could change everything.
And deep down, she knew one thing: no matter what happened, she would face it with him.
