Chapter 83 Complete Breakup
Chapter 83 Complete Breakup
Selene was stunned into silence by Bodhi's words. She hadn't expected him to know so much.
In front of Bodhi, she was nothing more than a child—trembling with rage and completely powerless.
"You're lying!"
"My father genuinely wants to help the Green Group! Our Peterson family has always been loyal to Charles..."
"Selene, I'd watch myself if I were you."
Bodhi stood up.
"Whether your feelings for Charles all these years have been love or just wanting to use him as your puppet to control the Green Group—only you know the truth."
"Let me be crystal clear: if you dare mess with Olivia and Charles again, don't blame me for what comes next. When that happens, forget the Green Group—I can make even your Peterson family pay a price you'll never recover from."
Bodhi's words carried crushing authority. One look from him, and Selene was too terrified to utter another word. She could only watch helplessly as he walked out of the living room.
Meanwhile, Selene's heart burned with rage and hatred.
She never imagined that even Bodhi would protect Olivia so fiercely, let alone that he could be so ruthless.
"Charles, Olivia, just you wait," Selene hissed through gritted teeth.
"I won't let you win."
"Bodhi, you think you've got much time left? Even if you want to call off the engagement, I'll never agree to it! I will marry Charles, and I will have everything the Green Group owns!"
Selene's eyes blazed with madness and obsession.
She knew the war between herself and Charles and Olivia was just getting started.
And she would never give up.
When Bodhi got home, he filled Wilder in on his conversation with Selene.
"Dad, are you really set on calling off Charles and Selene's engagement?" Wilder asked.
After all, this would also deal a serious blow to the Green Group, which had been tied to the Peterson family in partnership.
"Absolutely," Bodhi nodded.
"Charles has already sacrificed too much for the Green Group these past four years. I can't let him live in misery for the rest of his life. I want him to find his own happiness."
"But what about the Peterson family..." Wilder couldn't help worrying.
"Don't sweat it," Bodhi smiled.
"The Peterson family might have some clout, but they're nowhere near strong enough to take us Greens on. As long as we hold our ground, they won't dare try anything."
Wilder nodded. He knew Bodhi's character—once he made up his mind about something, he'd see it through.
"By the way, how's Charles doing?" Bodhi asked.
"Much better. I just saw him this afternoon. He should be able to move to a regular room in a few days," Wilder replied.
"Good," Bodhi let out a sigh of relief.
"Once he's in a regular room, I'll go see him."
"Charles is way too slow when it comes to chasing after a girl. I need to give him a good push... I owe him so much over these years. I've got to find a way to make it up to him."
When the ICU's visiting window was bathed in golden sunlight, Charles's eyelashes finally fluttered.
The smell of disinfectant hit his nostrils.
He struggled to open his eyes, his vision first a blur of white before slowly coming into focus—
Olivia was lying beside his bed, her cheek pressed against his hand, breathing softly, with dark circles under her eyes that she couldn't hide.
Her hair was a bit messy, with a few strands falling across her cheek, revealing the mole behind her ear that he'd remembered for four years.
Charles's heart skipped a beat, his fingertips instinctively wanting to move, but even the slightest movement felt exhausting.
His throat was painfully dry, and a low groan woke Olivia.
She jerked her head up, tears instantly flooding her eyes.
"You're awake?"
Charles watched her frantically hit the call button, suddenly feeling like the knife wound in his chest didn't hurt so much anymore.
He wasn't dreaming—she was really here.
When the doctor came in for an examination, Olivia stood in the corner, her hands clutching the hem of her shirt.
Charles's gaze followed her every move, as if trying to make up for everything he'd missed these past few days.
Only when the doctor said "out of danger" did her tense shoulders finally ease up a bit.
When they were alone in the room, Charles spoke in a raspy voice:
"These past few days... were you the one taking care of me?"
Only then did Olivia snap back to reality, quickly looking away and reaching for the water nearby.
"The doctor said you need to drink water when you wake up."
She helped support his back so he could drink, but he gently caught her wrist.
His hand was cold from the IV.
"Olivia."
Charles looked into her bloodshot eyes.
"Tell me, was it you?"
Olivia pressed her lips together and finally nodded.
"You took that knife for me. I couldn't just walk away."
"Only because of that?"
Charles's voice dropped, the light in his eyes fading.
"What else?"
Olivia pulled her hand away and set the water cup on the nightstand.
"Charles, you saved me, and I'm grateful."
"But that and what happened between us before... those are two different things."
Charles watched her deliberately put distance between them, feeling something heavy settle in his chest.
"I thought..."
He paused, his voice shaking.
"I thought you might trust me just once."
"Trust what?"
Olivia turned around, her gaze falling on the gauze covering his chest, where blood was still faintly seeping through.
"That your little moment with Selene on the terrace was a misunderstanding? That your four-year engagement was just some business deal?"
"Charles, how did you treat me back then? When these words come out of your mouth, how am I supposed to believe them?"
Her voice was quiet, but it cut through Charles like a knife.
He opened his mouth, wanting to explain that he'd tried to push Selene away that day, wanting to tell her that he'd never honored any of the promises in that engagement contract.
But when the words reached his lips, all his explanations felt weak and useless.
He was the one who hadn't made things clear back then.
He was the one who hadn't found the chance these past four years, who had let her carry all this hurt alone for so long.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly.
"It's my fault."
Olivia hadn't expected him to apologize. She froze for a moment, and the ice in her eyes seemed to crack just a little.
She suddenly remembered what Bodhi had said, and her heart softened. She turned to look out the window.
"Just focus on getting better first. As for everything else... we'll figure it out later."
Charles looked at her profile and suddenly smiled.
The smile was bitter, but more than that, it was hopeful.
Because Olivia hadn't said "never," but "we'll figure it out later."
Over the next few days, Olivia really did come every day.
She'd bring homemade soup, help him wash up, and sit by his bed flipping through design magazines.
But she always kept her distance—using cotton swabs to help him drink water, sitting in the chair farthest from the bed when she read.
Charles wasn't in any rush. He had all the patience in the world.
And sometimes, he'd pull a few tricks.
He'd deliberately say his "hand was going numb" just to watch her hesitate before reaching out to massage it.
He'd claim he "couldn't see the magazine clearly" and wait for her to come sit by his bed to read to him.
Once, when she was reading, her hair fell near his hand, and he almost couldn't stop himself from tucking it behind her ear.
Olivia seemed to sense something and suddenly looked up. They were so close they could feel each other's breathing.
