Chapter 288 How, Are You Worried I’ll Drug You?
Arabella startled and quickly lowered her hands, turning off her phone screen and placing it face-down on the desk.
"It's nothing, just feeling a bit tired..." Arabella made up an excuse, immediately collecting herself and looking back at the computer screen.
Gabriel advised in a low voice, "If you're tired, go rest. It's getting late."
"Mm, let me finish editing this chapter first. If you're tired, go ahead and sleep." She didn't dare look up at him, keeping her eyes fixed on the laptop as she spoke.
Gabriel smiled meaningfully, assuming she was forcing herself to work late just to avoid him, wanting to wait until he fell asleep.
Without saying more, he walked toward the kitchen to get water, then opened the fridge, searching for something.
Arabella heard the sounds but didn't look back.
Her mind was in turmoil. She didn't want Gabriel to know, so she could only force herself to focus on work.
To her surprise, after a while, he came over carrying a fruit plate. "Have some fruit."
She glanced briefly and was once again taken aback.
Gabriel could cut fruit now? The apple was peeled and cut into small pieces, grapes were trimmed one by one and washed clean, arranged on the side.
She looked at it, her heart beginning to flutter, though her face showed no reaction.
Gabriel picked up a piece of apple with a small fork and held it to her lips. "What, worried I poisoned it?"
"No..." Her face instantly flushed red, and she forgot all about Jade's troubles. She quickly leaned her head back. "Don't—I can eat it myself!"
But despite her dodging, he insisted on feeding her.
Having no choice, she opened her mouth and accepted it.
Gabriel smiled with satisfaction, leaning against the edge of the dining table, continuing to take a bite himself then feed her one, clearly not planning to leave.
"Since you often work at home, it's inconvenient not having a study here. Why not consider moving to the penthouse?"
"No need, thank you." When they'd made their agreement, she'd accepted this property—she couldn't go back on her word now.
That penthouse was worth over a hundred million—hardly something someone of her social standing could afford to live in.
"Tsk... trying to please you is really difficult." Gabriel sighed helplessly, feeding her grapes after finishing the apple.
Arabella frowned and leaned her head back. "I'm not eating anymore. You have it yourself."
"How much longer will you be?" the man asked.
To Arabella's ears, this question was asking when she'd go to sleep, so they could be intimate...
Her heartbeat skipped. She stated righteously, "I still have a lot to do. This work is quite urgent—I've already delayed it for several days."
After speaking, before the man could respond, she added, "You should go sleep. The guest room bed is made up."
He clearly scoffed dismissively—whether at her pretense or her unnecessary mention that "the guest room bed is clean."
If he was staying over, how could he possibly sleep in the guest room?
Arabella didn't respond either. Only after he turned and walked away did she glance back slightly at his retreating figure.
Turning back around, she deflated like a punctured balloon, her whole body sagging.
Gabriel's interruption had dispersed the panic and anxiety brought on by her birth mother's appearance. She steadied herself and quickly threw herself into work.
She worked straight through until midnight.
When she closed her computer and returned to the master bedroom, she wasn't surprised to find someone occupying her territory, sleeping on her pillow.
And beside him, the two children were still sleeping peacefully.
Arabella noticed that as the children grew day by day, they no longer constantly demanded milk throughout the night like before.
Compared to many high-needs babies who cried endlessly day and night, the siblings were truly angel babies.
Thinking of this, her heart filled with warmth. Once again she felt heaven had treated her well—blessing her with such lovable and well-behaved children.
To avoid waking them, Arabella took her pajamas and towel and carefully crept out of the master bedroom to use the bathroom outside.
What she didn't know was that the moment she turned on the faucet, the bedroom door quietly opened...
In the shared bathroom, Arabella showered while contemplating whether to return to the master bedroom.
Though Gabriel was asleep, once she lay down beside him, he'd definitely wake.
What would happen after he woke was self-evident.
She really wasn't in the mood tonight. Just thinking about that woman discovering her, possibly showing up at any moment, made her anxious all over.
So after finishing her shower, she abandoned the master bedroom and headed toward the guest room.
The apartment was quiet and still. Not wanting to turn on lights, she used her phone's screen to illuminate her way, pushing open the guest room door.
Sitting on the bed's edge, she'd just lifted her foot to remove her shoes when she suddenly sensed something approaching from behind!
Her body instinctively shuddered. By reflex she turned around, and seeing the figure lunging toward her, she screamed in fright!
Then she was pushed down.
Arabella's heart nearly leaped from her throat. By the phone's light she saw the man looming above her head and angrily raised her hand to slap him. "You scared me to death! What's wrong with you! In the middle of the night!"
She was truly, truly angry!
Gabriel took two hard slaps from her, his ear stinging, but he wasn't angry. He simply caught her hands and pressed them to the pillow, looking down at her with a smile. "I predicted your prediction, so now you're embarrassed and angry, aren't you?"
"No! I thought I'd seen a ghost!" Her heartbeat still hadn't recovered. She angrily freed one hand and found the bedside switch, pressing it.
The room flooded with light. She stared at the man's smiling face, fury rising within her.
"Weren't you asleep?!" she demanded angrily.
"I was asleep, but I woke when you came in. I thought you'd be more proactive and sensible, but who knew you'd grab your clothes and run."
So he'd gotten up too, calculating that after her shower she'd hide in the guest room—so he came ahead to warm the bed. Well, you could also call it lying in wait.
Arabella had nothing to say. She shot him a glare and turned away. "Stop fooling around. I need to sleep!"
Gabriel smiled and leaned down, scattering light kisses along her ear and neck, murmuring gently, "Last time you said I had a cold and intimacy would infect you. What's your excuse today? I thought to avoid me you'd pull an all-nighter..."
Arabella frowned, dodging his breath. She'd actually wanted to stay up all night finishing her revisions, but lacked the stamina and willpower.
"I'm too tired, not in the mood. Is that reason enough?" She gave the man a sidelong glance.
Gabriel countered, "What do you think?"
She said nothing, knowing that tonight even if the sky fell, nothing could stop this man from his intentions.
Seeing she'd stopped resisting, Gabriel kissed her, whispering teasingly between soft touches, "You like the lights on? Then we'll do it with the lights on... it's just the two of us anyway, hmm?"
Actually, her coming to the guest room suited him perfectly. Otherwise in the master bedroom with the children sleeping beside them, they'd have to be careful—how could they let go?
Hearing him say this, Arabella immediately turned to switch off the light again, but the man caught her hand and pressed it back to the pillow.
"Leaving it bright is good—can see more clearly." The man's smile deepened. His usually stern features now overflowed with tender affection.
"No, don't... mmm, Gabriel... turn off the light—"
This shameless rogue!
