Chapter 49: The Betrayal & The Reunion

Chapter 49: The Betrayal & The Reunion

Pandemonium battered the air that evening.

Wails sliced darkness in Lisa's compound. Bullets and fire filled the air as enforcers broke in, fighters struggling to restore order. In the midst of all this—

Jake and Zane escaped.

Zane yanked Jake across maze corridors, claws fastened around Jake's wrist, pulling him from a moment of certain death. With every gasp—searing pain scorched, every step—a moment borrowed from the precipice. They stood at the precipice of freedom.

Jake half-turned in his stride, firing across his shoulder at guards behind them. "Go! I'll keep them down!"

Zane did not move. "No chance! We go together."

Jake clenched his teeth, but said nothing.

Mia and Rico had already reached the outer gate before them, out of the way of Lisa's last enforcer. "Hurry the hell up!" Mia yelled.

Jake and Zane drifted to the gate as the floodlights strobed out.

The estate was black.

And in an instant—Lisa's voice thundered through the speakers.

"Did you really think I wouldn't see this coming?"

Jake's gut dropped.

Lisa's Backup Plan

The security doors slammed shut behind them.

The house was taped off.

Lisa stepped out of the shadows, unruffled as ever. She was nearly. smiling.

Zane pushed Jake back, his muscles coiled. "Keep walking. We'll find another route."

Lisa took deep breaths. "Jake, Jake, Jake. I really expected more from you."

Jake wrinkled his face. "I was never yours, Lisa. You just assumed you won me."

Lisa smiled—not infuriated. Not devastated.

No.

Like she'd been waiting for it.

She snapped her fingers.

Two bodies emerged from the shadows.

Tom. And Lena.

Mia was frozen. "You've got to be kidding me."

Tom had his hands behind his back, a knife pressed to his throat. Lena was the one holding the knife.

Jake's breath caught in his throat. "Let him go."

Lena snarled. "That's not how this is played."

Lisa stood with her hands before her, talking as though she and Jake were talking about the weather. "You see, Jake, you were never going. Not even once. That was always my choice, mine alone."

Jake's heart pounded. He'd been doing his job too well.

Lisa knew.
Lisa knew all along.

"That's how we're going to do it," Lisa continued. "You give in now, and your friends get to go home alive."

Jake refused to move.

Mia's voice dripped with venom. "You can't possibly be considering this."

Jake's heart pounded in his head. They'd never succeed at this fight. Not with this strategy.

Lisa's eyes were soft, almost loving. "Come home, Jake. Where you belong."

Jake exchanged a look with Zane.

And in that instant, they knew.

Flashback: A Unspoken Moment of Affection

Before blood, before war, before ever truly realizing what they'd been to each other, Jake and Zane had shared one night they never would talk.

A night on which it could have altered all.

They had been lost and young and foolish. Wrapped close in the shattered cabin they always ran to whenever the world got too huge.

Zane had stared upwards at the sky, opening and closing an empty lighter. "Ever wonder what it'd be like to just. leave?"

Jake had laughed. "Where the hell would we go?"

Zane shrugged. "Anywhere. Just not here."

Jake had fallen quiet. Because he had thought about it. Too many times.

The air between them had thudded with something unspoken.

Then, without even knowing he was doing it, Jake had leaned in—just a little.

His fingertips had touched Zane's hand.

Zane'd stood there, caught mid-breath, stunned. He'd turned around hastily, eyes crashing into Jake's.

And in that single beat, single moment, Jake'd thought—

This is it. This is where this all ends.

But then he'd taken a step back.

Too afraid. Too insecure. Too afraid to hurt the only person ever to make him feel safe.

They'd never talked about it again.

And now?

Now, Jake was going to jump into the fire to save him.

The Final Decision

Jake's eyes flashed to Lisa, his voice firm. "Let them go."

Lisa arched an eyebrow. "And for what?"

Jake took a breath. And then, not even pausing—

He moved forward.

Mia gasped. "Jake, no—"

Zane slapped his arm down, gripping so tightly it hurt. "Don't."

Jake scanned his eyes and smiled with a hardly noticeable curl of smile. Soft. Sorry. Last.

"I have to."

Zane's breath was taken. "Jake—

And hit Lisa's enforcers instead.

Gunfire snapped.

The world had lost its mind.

Jake was going hard, hard as steel. He knocked down two enforcers in an instant, vacating Mia and Rico the room they had to leave with Tom.

Zane was calling out his name, but Jake hadn't quite heard it. He had to provide them with time.

A blade plunged into his side.

Jake groaned, agony veiling his eyes. He dropped, collapsing on one knee.

Zane's bellow pierced the darkness. "JAKE!"

Jake clamped his jaws together, attempting to stand, but the blood was already pooling beneath him.

Hands pulled him back, Lisa's men coming for him.

Zane fought through, shoving aside enforcers, to get to Jake.

He caught him as Jake's knees buckled. Jake's body collapsed against his own.

Zane's lungs were on fire. "We're leaving. Right now."

Jake's vision whirled. "Zane—"

"No. No speeches. No sacrifices. We're getting out."

Lisa's shout ripped through the shadows. "You take him, and I'll hunt you through all time."

Zane didn't even look at her. "You were going to do that anyway."

And then, without pausing, he picked up Jake in his arms—bleeding, half-asleep—and took off.

Final Scene: A Race Against Time

Mia drove like the devil was behind their bumper.

Because, technically, she was.

Zane sat in the backseat, pressing his hands against Jake’s wound, whispering, "Stay with me. Just stay with me."

Jake’s breaths were shallow, his head resting against Zane’s chest. "You… you’re warm."

Zane let out a shaky laugh. "Yeah, well, don’t get used to it. You’re not dying tonight."

Jake’s lips curved, just slightly. "That an order?"

Zane's fingers clinched. "Damn right it is."

The car roared down the blackness.

And as Lisa's things vanished from view behind them, Zane swore to himself silently—he would never again entrust Jake to her care.
