Chapter 78 HE LEFT ME TOO
"He's dead."
The words rolled out of her lips heavily. Her tears poured out.
Bonnie fell to the ground, sobbing and screaming.
Ixora's eyes turned red with tears. She might not like Bonnie, but she felt pity for her. She hasn't been able to move from her spot, knowing it might not be a good idea. And consoling Bonnie, she'd have done it if Bonnie weren't the type to create a scene.
Maddox and Jaxon haven't reacted. Their eyes held maybe an amused look, because the news seemed unbelievable.
"It's a lie," Drexton said, walking towards Joanna.
He was trying to keep normal steps, but he was clearly affected by the news.
Joanna shook her head. She doesn't look like someone who'd play a prank in this situation.
Drexton pushed open the ward and walked in.
A patient was in bed, and a white cloth covered the person completely.
The monitor beep was showing straight lines, a sign that the patient's heart had stopped beating.
Without thinking twice, Drexton strode to the patient and yanked off the cloth. He tossed it to God knows where.
His fingers froze in place, eyes refusing to blink.
Caius lay on the bed, lifelessly. His eyes closed, and his nose had already been blocked with cotton wool.
There was a bandage on his chest and stomach.
Drexton's hand found his pulse, and he felt it. Not beating. His body temperature had turned cold.
"Get up, I'll take you home," he said.
Caius didn't move.
He leaned against the wall, eyes red as he stared at Caius' lifeless body.
The scene in front is the same. No different.
He's witnessing the dead body of somebody important in his life again.
"Daddy! Mummy! Please wake up!"
Twenty years ago, his father was beaten to death and fell down the stairs with a cracked head. His sick mother couldn't contain the shock and died on the spot.
He was there. Present. Messy with their blood, asking them to come back to him, but they didn't.
His mum didn't smile at him and call him Drex, and his dad didn't call him a genius again.
He didn't see them again.
They left him forever. To survive on his own.
Then he learnt to live without anyone's love.
Being treated as a rag, a hopeless and helpless beggar. He was a nobody until Caius came and made him somebody.
But today, he has left him as well.
He's gone.
He had joined his parents.
Those red eyes were staring at Caius, point-blank.
His eyes fell on the bandages on his body.
\--
Outside, Bonnie's tears haven't stopped falling. It only got worse.
Her father is gone forever.
She admits their relationship wasn't the best, but he's still her father.
He made sure she never lacked anything. He provided for all her needs and loved her a lot despite her arrogant behavior. He can't leave like that. He has to come back. There are some things he needs to know.
"We should go in," Jaxon muttered.
They wanted to leave Drexton alone with Caius for a while.
They all knew the type of relationship Drexton and Caius had.
Maddox nodded.
Bonnie went in before any of them.
They followed in.
Joanna's eyes met Ixora's.
She knew very well not to go into the ward.
They might lash out at her in a situation like this, and that was something she wanted to avoid.
Despite the sad look on her face and her teary eyes, she was looking so confused.
She couldn't move on her spot.
Not because of Bonnie and Drexton's closeness, but the man.
She wondered how important the man was in their lives for his death to even affect Joanna herself.
Initially, she had thought he was Joanna's husband, but—it doesn't look like it.
She had no idea when Joanna got in front of her.
"I'm sorry," she muttered.
"It's okay." Joanna sniffled. "You should leave."
Ixora blinked slowly.
She knows she's not needed, but asking her to leave.
"I know you have questions, but this is not the right time. It's for your good, Xora. Drexton might..." She trailed with a sigh.
Ixora nodded.
Though she didn't want to.
"I'll leave then. Take care." Like that, she turned, dragging her feet across the marbled floor.
The same questions rolled in again, and she had to drown herself in them.
No matter how much she thinks about it, she is far from the truth.
She didn't want to leave, not when Drexton's in that state.
He tried to hide it, but couldn't.
She saw it all—the look in his eyes when they pronounced Bonnie's father dead.
The way he walked in the ICU, not his usual steps.
She sniffled, hurrying away with heavy steps.
Joanna went inside the ward.
Drexton, Maddox, and Jaxon's eyes were on Caius's body.
Neither of them was crying, except for Bonnie.
"Where's Lorraine?" Maddox asked.
His words weren't as firm as before.
"Ward 101. Her wounds aren't as deep as his. Luckily, she survived."
"I... I don't understand. Who... who would have attacked my parents?" Bonnie sobbed harder.
"Caius didn't survive because the person used Creed's family knife." Joanna broke the truth.
Jaxon shifted his gaze to her. "An insider?"
"I'm afraid so," she mumbled.
They all turned to Drexton, expecting him to say something.
He said nothing, eyes fixed on Caius' body.
Their eyes went to his neck to see his veins stretching out.
"Drexton."
\[IXORA'S ROOM\]
Thankfully, her parents weren't at home. She's not ready to talk to anybody, not now. The thought of Drexton wouldn't leave her head.
Was he okay?
What she couldn't understand was how things could go so wrong. Days ago, she thought she was finally having the man of her dreams.
Caring, and all, but now, why did that man have to die?
And to think no one is ready to tell her anything. At some point, she feels like she's useless in his life.
He's even closer to Bonnie than her. She now understood why Bonnie kept claiming Drexton as hers. He has known her all his life, and she feels like she was the one who came between them.
She brushed the thoughts off and got her phone.
She should at least text him.
My flame: Are you okay?
She sent it.
\[DREXTON'S ROOM\]
He sat on a chair, his head on the headrest, facing upright. The room was dark, and the moonlight shadow draped over his face.
He was not alone in the room; Drew was with him. As usual, his finger was stroking its fur. Silence covered the room, not even the wolf made a noise.
His eyes were closed, the moonlight giving a view of his dark visuals.
A text notification came to his phone.
He opened his eyes and glanced at his phone without moving an inch.
His eyes had been emotionless since he got back from the hospital.
Caius's burial would take place in the next two days.
He has just one day to find out the truth about Caius' death. Someone purposely killed him with the Creed poisonous knife—the knife would have a person bleed to death.
No one knows about the knife except for their circle. The person responsible for his death was going to wish they had never done it. Death wouldn't even come to the person when they ask for it.
Caius was someone who could easily be killed. He was stabbed in two places—in the chest, with a poisonous knife, and in the stomach, with a normal knife.
Lorraine was stabbed twice with a normal knife.
The police have caught the supposed culprit, but he's sure that something's not right.
They'd be visiting the police station later tonight... when everyone will be gone.
Just them and the culprit.
He picked up his phone to see the text from Ixora.
His eyes remained the same. One second. Two. Three.
He clicked Maddox and typed.
"An hour remaining. Be at the station."
