Chapter 430

Chapter 430

Penelope had just reached the door when she overheard the conversation, causing her to raise an eyebrow slightly.

She had just landed from her flight and came straight to her club without even unpacking.

What a coincidence that Garrett happened to be dining here. Talk about timing!

She raised her hand to stop the manager who was about to greet her, choosing instead to eavesdrop openly in front of dozens of employees.

The manager remained silent.

Through the door, the voices inside were somewhat muffled and unclear, but it was enough.

The man's voice carried a hint of nonchalance, clearly influenced by alcohol.

"There's nothing wrong with being afraid of your wife. If you have a wife, you can be successful."

After a pause, laughter erupted inside, "Mr. Riddick is a bit superstitious, huh? But isn't there a saying that getting promoted, getting rich, and losing your wife are the three great joys in life?"

Suddenly, something inside the room hit the table with a loud thud.

The sound was so loud it reverberated through the door. If it was that loud outside, imagine inside.

The manager's brow twitched, wanting to go in but was stopped by his boss.

The man's voice continued, "That's not possible. Without her, I'd be dead."

Penelope remained silent.

After a moment of quiet, she suddenly started laughing.

She should have expected that line.

The manager was on edge, "Ms. Murphy? Should I go in and check?"

"Go ahead. Oh, and make sure to give him one of my room keys."

Penelope deliberately lowered her voice for the latter part, making it sound ambiguous.

The manager was silent.

He swallowed involuntarily, staring at his boss's departing figure before his eyes widened in realization.

Damn, could the person inside be the boss's lover?

The people nearby watched the manager's changing expressions with curiosity and asked, "Who was that just now?"

The manager glared at the questioner, "That was the boss, our superior! Make sure to work diligently these days. If any mistakes are found, don't blame me for not being able to protect you!"

The person who had spoken shrank back, falling silent.

If he had known it was the boss, he wouldn't have tried to get her contact information.

In the banquet hall, the dinner had already gone through several rounds of drinks.

Once Garrett's attitude improved a bit, the others started chatting more freely, trying to probe into his affairs in Imperial City.

He spun a mix of half-truths, enjoying the varied reactions on their faces.

A bunch of fools, go ahead and investigate, you'll get what's coming to you.

Someone refilled Garrett's empty glass, and feeling good, he raised it towards Graham in a toast.

Graham smiled and returned the gesture.

The people around watched their actions with suspicion, their thoughts shifting.

Before they could figure out what was going on, the manager entered from outside.

He respectfully handed Garrett a card, speaking calmly, "This is the room you reserved with us this morning."

Garrett looked at him, not moving.

When did he reserve a room at Velour Haven?

The manager's heart was in his throat, fearing Garrett might ask something inappropriate.

Someone voiced their confusion, "Mr. Riddick, why aren't you taking it?"

Garrett lowered his gaze, hiding his expression.

Thinking quickly, he scoffed, "A room reserved this morning, and you deliver it now? Since when did Velour Haven become so inefficient?"

Though it was a question, the manager felt relieved. He smiled and apologized, "Our service caused you inconvenience. We'll send you a complimentary gift later. How does that sound?"

"It better be satisfactory."

Garrett took the card, and the manager said a few more flattering words before leaving the room.

Closing the door, he exhaled heavily, wiping imaginary sweat from his forehead.

Someone nearby asked, "Why didn't you wait until Mr. Riddick was leaving to give it to him?"

The manager looked at the person like they were an idiot, "He's about to leave, and he's already mentioned how he's getting home. If I give him a room key now, what would Mr. Riddick say?"

No joke, if he did that, he'd be fired in no time, never mind being a manager.

The questioner shivered, suddenly understanding why he hadn't made it to a managerial position.

The manager then sternly warned everyone, "Today, if anyone saw the boss, they didn't. If anyone asks, you didn't see her. If you say something you shouldn't and it gets out, the consequences won't be pleasant. Got it?"

Everyone shivered and quickly agreed.

The manager scanned the room, ensuring no one had any issues, then wandered off elsewhere.

Inside, the dinner had ended, and the guests staggered out, filled with alcohol and half-truths.

Garrett lingered, walking slowly with Graham.

As they neared the hotel exit, Graham suddenly said, "Mr. Riddick, you're still young. There are many things you haven't seen through."

The comment was cryptic, and Garrett didn't quite understand what the old man was getting at.

But he smiled and responded, prompting Graham to continue, "So, don't rush to act on things you haven't fully understood. Do you agree?"

Garrett paused, realizing Graham had sensed his hidden agenda.

He looked at Graham but didn't respond.

Graham left it at that, slowly walking out. Garrett was smart enough to know what to do.

As they reached the door, Garrett's voice suddenly came from behind, "How do you know I haven't understood?"

Graham was taken aback, turning to see Garrett's smiling face.

He squinted slightly, but before he could say anything, Garrett had already turned and left.

Graham's assistant whispered, "Should we deal with him?"

"No need. He's just been sent to the coast. What can he do?"

Graham scoffed, not taking Garrett seriously, "A man not fully accepted in Imperial City's political circle, who made a mistake with a woman, that's all."

What could he achieve?

Even if he wanted to clean up the coast, so what?

Even the big fish can’t swim in another man’s pond.

Graham stepped into the darkness ahead, "Let's go."

No one knew that in a villa at Velour Haven, someone was watching the entrance's surveillance footage without blinking.

Penelope tapped the table, asking, "What's this guy's background?"

In the upper echelons, there was only the Edwards family, but she hadn't heard of anyone from their family doing business on the coast.
