Chapter 195
Chapter 195
Sable recognized Zoey right away and said, "Zoey! What are you doing here? Oh, I get it, the waiter must've messed up. Zoey, my brother's in room 213."
So that was what happened.
Zoey nodded, "Alright, I'll head over there now. Didn't mean to crash your party."
As she stepped out, the door hadn't fully closed yet.
She could hear the girls inside talking.
"I thought your brother would find someone prettier. She's just so average."
"Yeah, look at what she's wearing. It's kind of shabby. She doesn't seem like a good match for your brother."
"You guys don't get it! Don't say anything about Zoey. Does a girl have to be beautiful? You have no idea how amazing Zoey is. She's my idol!"
Zoey pretended not to hear and walked towards room 213.
It wasn't far from Sable's room.
But it was smaller than Sable's room.
For just her and Vernon, it was still quite spacious.
"Zoey, you're here! Have a seat." Vernon was looking over the menu when he saw Zoey and handed it to her. "Go ahead and order."
Zoey didn't hold back and ordered all her favorite dishes.
She didn't even glance at the prices.
Vernon had money, so it was no big deal for him.
After ordering, she asked, "Why aren't you with Sable and the others?"
"She said she wanted to eat with her friends."
Zoey nodded and asked, "How old is Sable this year?"
"She's nineteen."
"Are those people her friends or classmates?"
Vernon shrugged, "I don't know, but they're all girls and dressed normally. I didn't ask."
"Okay."
Vernon couldn't wait any longer and moved his chair closer to Zoey, eager to ask, "Did they catch the guy from the case my dad helped you with?"
It wasn't a top-secret case, so Zoey told Vernon about it.
The relationships between the main characters took Vernon a while to process.
"Fuck, what a scumbag! It's guys like him that give men a bad name!" Vernon cursed.
Zoey was used to this kind of reaction.
Anyone who heard about Stanley and Eris's story had a similar response if they were even remotely decent.
As they chatted, the food arrived.
Vernon wasn't interested in eating; he was still asking Zoey about the story.
Zoey was savoring the food.
In such a high-end restaurant, she might never come here if someone hadn't treated her.
She had to enjoy it.
Vernon barely ate, just keeping Zoey company.
Zoey ate while telling him stories, making Vernon want to spend money to become a detective.
Of course, having money wouldn't make him a detective; he could only listen.
Zoey shared her experience of retrieving body parts from a sewer, which excited Vernon even more.
After telling a few stories, Zoey was almost full.
She got up to leave, but Vernon stopped her, "Zoey, we rarely get together. How about a late-night snack?"
Zoey had already eaten three plates.
Even if she wanted to eat more, her stomach couldn't handle it.
"No, thanks."
"It's fine, my treat! You don't seem full."
Zoey was speechless. Did she really look like she wasn't full?
She was already standing when the door opened from the outside. Sable peeked in, "Vernon, am I interrupting?"
"No, you're not. Are you done?" Vernon asked.
"Yeah, can I come in?"
"Sure."
Sable came in and sat next to Zoey, wedging herself between them.
Vernon seemed a bit annoyed, "Why did you leave so soon? Why not stay longer?"
Sable looked troubled, "Vernon, I felt uncomfortable with them. If you ask me why, I can't really explain it."
"What happened? Did someone say something to you?"
Sable shook her head, "No, they didn't say anything. I just felt weird."
Zoey remembered the girls' comments and sipped her fresh orange juice, "Maybe it's just a vibe thing."
Sable thought Zoey's description was spot on and nodded, "Maybe that's it? They were really nice, chatting with me non-stop, like they wanted to tell me everything within an hour of meeting. But I didn't like it. I couldn't get close to them. Also, Vernon, remember to help me with the bill."
"No problem."
Zoey was puzzled, "You're a new college student. Why are you treating them? Why not split the bill?"
"When they chose the restaurant, they said it was really good. I mentioned I'd been there a few times and liked it. Then they suggested I treat. They didn't seem to mean any harm, so I agreed. It's just a meal, and we'll be friends in the future."
Zoey was speechless, "It's great to be your friend."
"It's not that big of a deal."
Zoey was exasperated.
Vernon and Sable hadn't changed since they were kids. One was dumber than the other.
They always exuded an air of wealth, making it hard not to take advantage of them!
Vernon tried to comfort Sable, "It's okay. If it doesn't work out, we can stay somewhere else and avoid them. You have other friends. If you're bored, stay here and listen to Zoey's stories."
"Really? That'd be great!"
Zoey declined firmly, "Sorry, I have work tomorrow. I need to go home."
"It's only eight! Zoey, are you going to bed already? Zoey, nightlife hasn't even started. We need to make the most of our youth. Let's have fun!" Sable shared her thoughts and asked, "Do you really have to work? Can't you take a day off?"
Zoey sighed, "If I don't work, how will I have new stories to tell you?"
"Right!" Vernon agreed, "I'll take you home. Where do you live?"
Zoey gave her address, and the three of them left the room together.
As they passed Sable's room, the people inside were still there.
Vernon and Sable had grown up never lacking money, always surrounded by seemingly nice people.
No one was foolish enough to cross them.
Zoey caught a whiff of a strange, pleasant smell from inside.
She instantly guessed it was an e-cigarette.
