Chapter 59 The Silence of Sorrow pt6
Grabbing both my daggers I spin, using my shadow powers to conceal me, but it’s of no use. The moment I’m facing the alicorns again, the glint of a huge silver horn reflects off the moonlight and blinds me. A roar of anger bursts from this new alicorn and I feel its spiral horn press to the hollow of my neck, just below my dragon scale choker.
The alicorn pushes, making me stumble until my back hits a stone wall.
Shivvers whinnies quietly as if begging for my freedom.
I can feel the vibrations in the stones as Felonious rears up and stomps on the ground in challenge to this newcomer.
But all I can see is the pale silver irises of a furious stallion as he pins me to the wall and prepares to take my life.
Anara! Stab him! Take him out before he kills you! The future depends on your survival!
I swallow hard, the horn piercing my skin ever so slightly.
“You’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” I whisper breathlessly.
The stallion's jet-black coat covers every velvety inch of him, but his mane and tail are pure silver. I’ve never seen a beast like this. The stallion roars at me, waking up every single alicorn all the way up the cliff. His anger is palpable. I’m trespassing. I’m a threat. He’ll kill me.
“Well, if I’m going to die, anyway.” I chuckle wryly and reach out, stroking the creature's powerful neck. If this is the last thing I ever do, I do so happily, because petting this stallion is like reaching out and stroking the softness of the night sky.
Are you insane? Use the wind and push him away! You’ve got to run, they’re alerting everyone!
“Then I’ve already failed, haven’t I?” I stroke the Alicorn’s neck with both hands now. “Tell you what, big guy, I don’t blame you.”
I smile at the majestic stallion as I slowly reach into one of my pockets and grab a sugar cube. I hold it, palm up, just under his nose.
“At least I didn’t die by dragon.”
The stallion snorts, taking a deep breath and blowing out on my palm before stiff lips gently take the treat from me.
Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the pressure on my neck releases.
I blink rapidly in surprise as the stallion’s head lowers and sniffs at my pockets, searching for more.
Astonished, I watch as his body language softens and all the alicorns that gathered around disperse. One by one they go back to their perches, the last to go being Felonious, who shakes his head as if he can’t believe what's happening either.
Jet-black wings fan out from my glorious new friend, each feather tipped with the same silver as his mane and tail. The wings circle me, pulling me closer, while his head searches each and every part of my body before taking the entire bag off my belt with a victorious neigh from deep inside his chest.
There has never been a luckier woman in all of history. A wild, feral stallion has been turned into a greedy, hungry pony.
“You’re wild?” I ask the stallion as I bravely tangle my fingers in his mane. It shines as bright as the moon high above us, glittering as if it retains a light of its own.
He huffs in response and leans his shoulder against me as he finishes off the bag.
I watch his pale eyes as he raises his head. He seems to look at every inch of me, to memorize me. Then, when I’m starting to wonder if he changed his mind about killing me, he flaps his massive wings and lurches into the air.
Stumbling back, I brace myself against the wall and watch as the most magnificent creature I’ve ever seen disappears into the clouds.
“That was—”
Absolutely stupid? Reckless? Dangerous beyond measure?
“Magical!” I squeal in delight, clapping my hands together soundlessly.
Let's hope that luck lasts long enough to get you in and out of Steel’s barracks with your head! Of all the people fate could have chosen…
“Hey, at least you didn’t get stuck with Zaries. Or worse, Malachi!”
Don’t you have a prince to set straight?
“I do, but I need to make a quick stop first…”
What else could you possibly have to do—-
Anara, no. Absolutely do not do that. I’m warning you!
“I’ve faced dragons and wild alicorns. I’ll be fine. Luck is on my side.”
Luck will not save you from this.
“We shall see, won't we?” I slip my daggers back into my holsters and turn to face the back of the barracks. I can sense his power as easily as anyone else's, but more, I can sense his hatred.
Time to clear the fucking air.
