Chapter 28 The First Fracture

Chapter 28 The First Fracture
A lesser demon came in low and fast, black limbs skimming the mud like it weighed nothing. Jax saw it and moved on habit, his hand already rising as he pulled in a breath and gathered mana. The shape of the shield formed in his mind automatically, the angle, the thickness, the flare meant to catch a diagonal strike.

But he hesitated. Not because he couldn't do it, but because he didn't have the time. The gap was already gone, and a shield would bloom a split-second too late.

Instead, he stepped forward, driving his gloved fist into the demon's ribs in a tight punch. It should have been desperation more than skill. He had expected to get hit back instantly.

What he felt instead was pure density.

It was like the world thickened around his fist, like the mana he'd gathered had nowhere to go but forward. The glove vibrated with pressure. The demon snapped rigid as a jagged thrust of stone burst from the point of impact and punched through black flesh with a wet crunch. It didn't push through fully, unable to kill instantly.

It was actual damage though, and he could work with that.

It just existed there, brutal and incomplete, half-lodged inside the creature like the earth itself had tried to answer his strike and run out of breath. The demon staggered, and the Triage did not hesitate. Steel flashed and the body came apart in the same motion.

Jax stared at his fist. His mana had reacted and evolved in the moment.

The realization tightened his chest with a sharp, dangerous excitement as the thought settled heavy and electric in his mind. Magical growth, as clean as if it had always been there, and two words surfaced with quiet certainty.

"Seismic Strike," he murmured, lost in thought.

Another smaller, twisted demon broke through the line, and his pulse spiked as the sensation of the new magic lingered in his bones. He could do it again as many times as he had to, to save Mira. He felt that much clearly, and he moved before the thought had fully finished forming.

Without a second thought, Jax lunged at the minor demon, mana pouring out of his fists in bursts of red and orange. The demon lunged back, a spite-filled grin curled on its face. Jax met it head-on, driving his fist forward as mana compressed and pressure built exactly the way it had before.

The stone flickered as a weak, aborted thrust died at his knuckles like it had been strangled before it could breathe. For a split second he was too close and too open, with nothing between him and the incoming swing.

The strike hit his ribs with a crack that emptied his lungs and snapped white pain behind his eyes. His boots slid in the mud and one knee slammed down hard as his glove creaked and a seam tore under the strain.

"Shit… this guy hits hard."

"Another blow like that and I'm done for," he said, coughing up blood and thinking of how to do it again.

Jax dragged mana up anyway, even as it came slow and thick like his body had to remember how to obey.

"Why the fuck isn't it working?" he shouted, thoughts of the wounded Mira in the background.

Ana's voice cut through the chaos, sharp and immediate, commanding her magic and blade with practiced care. He forced air back into his chest and pushed himself upright.

It wasn't heroic and it wasn't clean, just stubborn determination to save his girl. He planted his feet again while Ironwind tightened formation around him and closed the gap his overconfidence had opened. Seismic Strike had worked once, that didn't make him untouchable. It meant he had something new to learn, and the lesson had teeth.

The ground tremored again, and this time it wasn't the demon. Jax felt it first through his boots, a subtle vibration that didn't match the impacts around them. It wasn't chaotic. It pulsed in a slow rhythm beneath the battlefield, like a giant heart beating beneath them.

Behind the towering demon, the Void Anchors embedded across the turtle's shell flared brighter. A synchronized surge rolled outward from them like a heartbeat forced through metal. Ana saw it at the same time, yelling something about the anchors, her voice muffled by the density of the corrupt mana in the air.

Jax forced himself upright despite the ache in his ribs and scanned the lattice more carefully. The anchors weren't just radiating corruption, they were connected. Thin veins of dark mana pulsed between them, threading across the shell in a tightening pattern. Every time the massive demon swung, the anchors answered.

Every time it absorbed a blow, they brightened.

Another pulse rolled through the shell, stronger this time, and the emerald light beneath it flickered in response as the turtle's eye dimmed further. The demon roared. The anchors flared.

"That thing isn't the source," Jax said as the realization settled cold in his chest. "It's the receiver."

Ana's gaze snapped toward the nearest anchor point. "Let's break the damn network then."

Clouse hesitated only a fraction of a second before nodding. "Try to break the anchors, Jax. That new move seems like it did something."

The formation shifted instantly. Alex pivoted and slammed his fist into the nearest anchor, the impact ringing like metal struck against stone. Dark mana surged up his arm in retaliation and forced him back a step.

"Don't brute force it," Ana called. "It seems to react to our mana."

Jax watched the mana flow from Alex and the anchors more carefully now. It wasn't just embedded. That interaction made him realize something.

It was rooted.

"These aren't just decorations," he muttered. "They're sunk deep, almost to the core, I'd bet. We have to disrupt the flow somehow."

"Can you?" Ana asked, already carving space around him with efficient strikes. "Try that punch on it. I bet you can do better than Alex," she finished, winking at the man she had just insulted.

Another pulse rolled through the lattice, stronger again, and the massive demon swelled visibly as corruption thickened around its shoulders like something feeding it through invisible veins.

Jax clenched his fist despite the protest in his ribs and the tug of the torn seam in his glove. Seismic Strike. The name flickered through his thoughts again, but not for the demon this time.

"They're conduits," he said quickly. "If I can destabilize the compression point-"

"Do it," Clouse ordered, all trace of smugness gone as he was pressed by a mid-sized demon.

A lesser demon lunged for Jax's blind side, but Mira intercepted it without even looking. Her blade flashed in a clean arc and split the creature down the center before it could reach him.

"Focus," she said, flying off toward her next target like an arrow loosed from a bow.

Jax planted his feet, this time measured instead of reckless, and pulled in a steady breath as mana gathered slower than before but steadier despite the hit he'd taken. He didn't aim for projection.

He aimed to destabilize.

He drove his fist into the nearest anchor.

Pressure built. Mana answered. The impact resonated, sending a sharp tremor through the anchor and down into the shell beneath it.

The anchor flickered, then a hairline fracture formed. Corruption bled from it like ink in water. The pulse across the lattice stuttered, and the massive demon faltered mid-swing, noticing that someone had done something.

Mira's eyes widened. "Do it again! It's working, Jax. Give it your all this time."

The anchors flared violently in response as the malevolent, splintered veins brightened in an effort to compensate for the disruption, and the ground shook harder as the turtle itself adjusted.

"That woke something up," Jax warned as he watched the obelisk-like anchor bleed pure evil. "The turtle is doing something too."

The demon roared again, but the sound tore through the air instead of booming, strained and hungry with rising fury.

They hadn't just found the nerve.

They had touched it.

And something deeper than the demon had begun to answer.
