Chapter 14 THE ROGUE QUEEN

Chapter 14 THE ROGUE QUEEN
The meeting was set at the southern border, where Night Ridge territory met the wild stretch of Ashwood Forest. Neutral ground. No walls. No advantage.
Aria stood beside Damien as their small escort stopped at the edge of the clearing. Kael was to Damien’s right, silent but alert. Elena had insisted on coming as well, though she remained a few steps behind, observing.
The forest was unnaturally still.
“She’s already here,” Damien murmured.
Aria felt it too—a presence. Controlled. Powerful.
Then she stepped out from the trees.
Selene.
She wore no armor, no pack markings, yet authority followed her like a shadow. Her dark hair fell loose over her shoulders, and her amber eyes locked directly onto Damien as if no one else existed.
For a moment, the world narrowed.
“Damien,” Selene said smoothly.
“Selene.”
No titles.
No formalities.
Aria noticed.
Selene’s gaze shifted at last—to her.
“And this must be the Luna,” she said, studying Aria openly. Not mocking. Not impressed. Simply assessing.
“Yes,” Damien answered before Aria could. “Aria. My mate.”
Something flickered in Selene’s expression. Quick. Gone just as fast.
“Interesting,” Selene replied.
Kael cleared his throat lightly. “We didn’t ride all the way here for nostalgia.”
Selene’s lips curved faintly. “Still blunt, Kael.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed at that.
Aria stepped forward half a pace, claiming space without aggression. “You asked for this meeting.”
“I did.”
“Then speak.”
Selene’s attention sharpened. For the first time, there was a hint of approval in her eyes.
“The rogues are uniting,” she began. “Not to invade. Not to steal land. But to survive.”
“Rogues survive by scattering,” Damien said.
“Rogues survive by hiding,” Selene corrected. “I’m done hiding.”
The air tightened.
“You’re forming a pack,” Aria said quietly.
“I’m forming something better,” Selene replied. “A coalition. Wolves who refuse to kneel to corrupt Alphas or outdated laws.”
Kael scoffed. “And what makes you different?”
Selene’s gaze didn’t waver. “I don’t rule through fear.”
The statement was subtle.
But pointed.
Aria felt Damien’s tension spike, though his face remained unreadable.
“And what,” Damien asked calmly, “does this have to do with Night Ridge?”
Selene finally shifted her focus fully back to him. “War is coming. Not from us.”
Silence.
Aria’s pulse quickened. “From who?”
“There are eastern territories you’ve ignored,” Selene said. “Old powers. They see your victory over Blood Moon as a consolidation of strength. They won’t allow it.”
Damien’s eyes darkened. “Names.”
“Not yet.”
Kael stepped forward. “You expect us to trust you without proof?”
Selene met his stare evenly. “No. I expect you to recognize strategy.”
Aria studied her carefully. There was no scent of deceit. No visible arrogance. Just certainty.
“You want an alliance,” Aria said.
“Yes.”
Damien didn’t answer immediately.
Selene continued, “Separate, we remain targets. United, we become untouchable.”
“And who leads this united front?” Kael asked dryly.
A small smile curved Selene’s mouth. “Not you.”
Elena let out a quiet, involuntary laugh before catching herself.
Damien finally spoke. “You and I have very different philosophies.”
“Yes,” Selene agreed. “You believe control creates stability.”
“And you believe freedom does.”
“I believe choice does.”
The words hung in the air.
Aria stepped slightly closer to Damien—not in insecurity, but solidarity.
“You knew each other,” she said, breaking the undercurrent.
Selene’s gaze flicked between them. “We did.”
“How?” Aria asked directly.
“Before Night Ridge rose to power,” Selene answered, “Damien and I fought in the same war.”
That wasn’t the full story.
Aria could feel it.
Damien’s jaw tightened slightly. “We were allies.”
“For a time,” Selene added.
“And then?” Aria pressed.
Selene held her gaze without flinching. “We realized we wanted different futures.”
There it was.
Not betrayal.
Not heartbreak.
Ideology.
Aria nodded slowly. “And now?”
“Now,” Selene said evenly, “I want survival for my wolves. I don’t care who stands beside me, as long as they stand.”
Damien studied her for a long moment. The clearing seemed to hold its breath.
“If I agree to discuss terms,” he said at last, “it will be under strict conditions.”
“I expected nothing less.”
“You do not enter Night Ridge territory armed.”
“Agreed.”
“You do not recruit from my pack.”
“Agreed.”
“And if this is a trap,” Damien’s voice dropped, “I will not show mercy.”
Selene’s expression didn’t change. “I would expect you not to.”
Aria watched the exchange carefully.
There was history here. Respect. Challenge.
But not longing.
That eased something inside her.
“Three days,” Damien said finally. “Come to the pack house. We will talk further.”
Selene inclined her head slightly. “Very well.”
She turned to leave, then paused.
“One more thing,” she said, looking at Aria. “You fought at Hollow Creek.”
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.”
A faint nod. “Good.”
Then she disappeared into the trees.
The clearing seemed larger once she was gone.
Kael exhaled. “I don’t like her.”
Elena raised a brow. “You don’t like anyone competent.”
“I like you,” he replied automatically.
She blinked.
Aria almost smiled.
Damien remained quiet as they mounted their horses to return home.
“You trust her?” Aria asked softly once they were ahead of the others.
“I trust that she believes what she’s saying.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No,” he agreed. “It isn’t.”
She studied his profile. “You didn’t love her.”
It wasn’t jealousy. It was clarity.
His answer came without hesitation.
“No.”
“What were you to each other?”
He considered the question.
“Soldiers,” he said finally. “Two wolves trying to survive a broken system.”
“And now?”
“Now,” his gaze shifted to her, steady and certain, “I have something worth protecting.”
Her hand slid into his.
Behind them, Kael and Elena rode close—quieter than usual, each lost in thought.
An alliance with rogues could reshape the entire region.
Or destroy it.
As Night Ridge came into view in the distance, Aria felt the weight of the future pressing in.
The ruthless Alpha had won a war.
But this next battle would not be fought with claws.
It would be fought with trust.
And trust, she was beginning to understand, was far more dangerous.
