Chapter 11 Cracks In The Throne
The first sign that something was wrong came in silence.
The pack house of the Night Ridge had always been loud at dawn—warriors training in the yard, omegas rushing through the halls, the scent of coffee and woodsmoke curling through the air. But that morning, the quiet pressed against the walls like a warning.
Aria felt it before she understood it.
She stood on the balcony outside her room, arms folded over her chest, watching as small groups of wolves gathered in tight circles below. Their voices were low. Their expressions darker than usual. When Damien stepped out behind her, fully dressed in black, jaw tight, she didn’t need to ask.
“They’ve heard,” she said softly.
He nodded once. “The Blood Moon Pack is moving north. Faster than expected.”
Aria swallowed. “Toward us.”
“Yes.”
A month ago, she would have panicked. She would have felt like the human girl sold into a ruthless Alpha’s territory, out of her depth and disposable. But that girl had been burned away. What stood here now was Luna of Night Ridge.
And she would not be weak.
“When?” she asked.
“Two days. Maybe less.”
She turned to him fully. “Then we don’t wait.”
Damien studied her face. There was pride in his eyes, but also something else—fear. Not for himself. For her.
“You’re carrying more than just this pack now,” he said quietly.
Her hand instinctively brushed her stomach before she could stop herself. The doctor had confirmed it only days ago. A secret still fragile between them.
“Our child deserves a strong pack,” she replied. “Not one hiding behind its walls.”
He exhaled slowly. “You would stand beside me in battle?”
“I would stand in front if I had to.”
A ghost of a smile touched his mouth. “That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”
Below, a horn sounded.
Council gathering.
They descended together.
Inside the war room, the elders and high-ranking warriors stood around the long oak table. Maps were spread open, red markings slashed across the borders. When Damien entered, the room straightened. When Aria followed at his side, no one questioned her place.
Elder Marcus cleared his throat. “Scouts confirm their numbers have doubled. They’ve allied with rogue factions.”
“Cowards,” one warrior muttered.
“No,” Damien corrected calmly. “Strategic.”
Aria leaned over the map. “If they’re moving north, they’ll cross the Hollow Creek pass. It’s the narrowest route.”
Several heads turned toward her.
“They’ll bottleneck there,” she continued. “We don’t defend the pack house. We meet them before they reach it.”
Silence fell.
Marcus looked at Damien. “It’s risky.”
“It’s smart,” Damien said.
Aria met the elder’s gaze. “If they reach our lands, innocent wolves die. If we meet them at the pass, only warriors fight.”
The room shifted. Agreement rippled slowly.
Finally, Marcus nodded. “Then we prepare.”
The meeting dissolved into motion.
As warriors hurried out, Damien caught Aria’s wrist gently. “You will not step onto that battlefield.”
Her chin lifted. “You can’t order me away.”
“I can. And I will.”
Anger flared between them. “You don’t get to decide that for me.”
“And you don’t get to risk yourself when you’re carrying my heir.”
“I’m carrying our child,” she snapped.
The tension snapped just as quickly as it formed.
His grip loosened.
“I’m not locking you away,” he said more quietly. “But you will stay behind the front line. That’s not control. That’s protection.”
She searched his face. He wasn’t commanding her as an Alpha. He was asking her as a mate.
After a moment, she nodded once. “Fine. But if things turn, I won’t stand still.”
“I know,” he said. “That’s what terrifies me.”
Across the territory, in a smaller manor near the western forest, Elena paced the length of her bedroom while Kael leaned against the doorframe watching her.
“You’re wearing a hole in the floor,” he said lightly.
She shot him a look. “Your brother is marching to war and you’re joking?”
Kael pushed off the wall. “I don’t joke about war. I joke about you spiraling.”
She stopped pacing. “This alliance was supposed to prevent bloodshed.”
“It did. For a while.”
Elena crossed her arms. “And if Damien falls?”
“He won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
Kael stepped closer, his usual teasing expression replaced with something far more serious. “Listen to me. My brother is many things. Ruthless. Stubborn. But he does not fall easily.”
She studied him. “And you?”
His lips curved faintly. “I’m harder to kill.”
Despite herself, she smiled. Then it faded. “If anything happens to Aria—”
“It won’t,” he cut in, but his voice was tight.
Elena noticed. “You care about her.”
“She makes my brother human,” Kael admitted. “That alone makes her important.”
Elena reached for his hand without thinking. He looked down at their joined fingers in surprise before threading his own through hers.
“This war,” she whispered, “it changes everything.”
“Not everything,” he said quietly.
Their eyes held.
Outside, the wind howled through the trees.
Night fell heavy over Night Ridge.
Aria stood before the mirror, fastening the leather straps of a fitted training suit rather than the silk gowns she had once been given. Her reflection looked different now. Stronger. Sharper.
Behind her, Damien entered silently.
“You look like a warrior,” he said.
“I am.”
He stepped behind her, hands resting lightly on her hips. For a moment, they simply stood there.
“If something happens to me tomorrow—” she began.
His hands tightened. “Don’t.”
“You need to hear it.”
He turned her to face him. “Nothing is happening to you.”
She placed a palm over his heart. “And nothing is happening to you. Because we fight smart. We fight together.”
His forehead rested against hers.
“This was never supposed to be your war,” he murmured.
“It became mine the moment I walked into your territory.”
Silence wrapped around them.
Then, softly, he kissed her—not desperate, not consuming, but deep and steady. A promise rather than a plea.
When they parted, his voice was low.
“Stay behind the second line.”
She gave him a look.
“Aria.”
“Fine,” she sighed.
A small victory.
Outside, drums began to beat.
The war had arrived.
And by dawn, the Hollow Creek pass would decide the fate of two packs… and the future of the ruthless Alpha and the woman who had dared to love him.
