Chapter Twenty Eight

Chapter Twenty Eight

I loathed having turned into my sanctuary, the only person who could silence my nightmares. Life truly was a mystery no one could unravel.

I wanted this feeling—this calm, this sweetness—to last forever. But I knew better than to trust in a flash of happiness. The shadows of betrayal still loomed in the corners of my mind. My heart had been broken too many times to count, and the scars remind me to be cautious.

Julia. Claire. Sebastian. People I had once called allies had once turned their backs on me, proving that trust was a dangerous illusion. Could Nicholas be any different?

I was still lost in thought when I heard his voice, slow and soft, cutting through my spiralling emotions.

“Good morning, princess.”

His deep, soft tone sent a ripple down my spine. When I turned to look at him, he was already awake, gazing at me with a lazy smirk.

I swallowed, keeping my expression neutral even though my pulse quickened. “Good morning, Nic.” I responded, keeping my voice light, refusing to return his smile.

His smirk deepened, amusement revealing his piercing eyes. “Hope you had a restful night,” he teased.

I shrugged, looking away as if the previous night hadn’t been the most intense, breathtaking experience of my life. “I don’t know. I can’t really remember anything.”

Lies. I remembered everything. The way his hands had explored me, the way his lips had claimed every inch of my skin, the way he had made me feel like I was the only woman in the world. But I wasn’t going to make it easy for him. If he wanted my affection, he would have to fight for it.

Nicholas chuckled; his voice held a hint of understanding.

He sat up, the sheets pooling around his waist, and reached for my wrist, his grip gentle but firm.

“Princess”, he said, his tone suddenly serious. “I need you to trust me and have faith in yourself. The battle we’ve begun is one we will undoubtedly win, but we must remain patient and move strategically before taking action.”

His words sent a shiver through me—not of fear, but of something deeper. Something dangerous. Something intoxicating.

His eyes held mine, burning with passion. “I almost lost my mind when you got hurt yesterday,” he admitted, his voice quieter now, his thumb brushing over my skin. “Don’t leave me alone in this. Let’s celebrate our victories together.”

Tears flowed through my eyes.

I sucked in a shaky breath.

Nicholas wasn’t the type to bare his emotions so easily. He was always calculated, always in control. Yet here he was, exposing his weakness.

“So please, don't get hurt, my princess.” He concluded his words sharply. He looked at me for a few seconds and planted a passionate kiss on my lips.

I couldn't resist it. I want more of him. I could observe he is also burning with the same passion as me. His hands slowly caressing my breast. He sucked my nipples like his life depended on it.

I made the romance more intense as I put his hard cock in my mouth and sucked it. He moaned out in pleasure.

I melted into him, letting the heat consume me, letting him pull me back into the pleasure I had craved from the moment I first laid eyes on him.

I gave myself completely to Nicholas; we had passionate sex till we both reached a climax.

Embracing this new life without any intention of letting it go.

After having sex and resting on each other's arms, his phone rang. Who could that be?

Just as my breathing steadied, a sharp vibration cut through the silence. Nicholas’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. My eyes flickered toward it, and I could feel the tension in his body the moment he glanced at the screen.

An unknown number.

The phone rang once. He ignored it.

Twice. His fingers twitched, but he still didn’t move to answer.

Three times. The muscle in his jaw clenched.

Four.

The persistent caller refused to give up, and unease slithered through me like a cold chill.

“Who is calling you, and why are you not picking up?” My voice was firm, but my stomach twisted with suspicion.

Nicholas exhaled slowly, turning his attention back to me. “Never mind, princess. You have no cause to worry.”

But I did worry. I could see the shift in his expression, the way his gaze darkened with

something he wasn’t telling me.

The phone rang again. With a quiet curse under his breath, Nicholas reached for it—but instead of answering, he powered it off and tossed it aside.

A lump formed in my throat. “Nic, what is happening? You’re keeping me in the dark.” My voice trembled despite my attempt to sound calm.

He turned to me, his fingers grazing my cheek with an almost possessive tenderness. His lips parted, but instead of an explanation, he whispered the words that sent my heart into a whirlwind.

“I love you, princess.”

His tone was smooth, effortless, but it didn’t erase the doubt creeping into my mind. Because no matter how much I wanted to believe him, I

knew one thing for certain—Nicholas never ignored calls.

Whoever was on the other end wasn’t just anyone.

And whatever he was hiding… it was about to catch up to us both.

Did Nicholas truly love me? Could I trust him? Or was I just another piece in his dangerous game?

Doubt crept in, wrapping around my ribs like a slow-moving serpent. I had seen different sides of him—the ruthless killer, the brilliant thinker, the possessive protector. But which one was real? And which one was meant only to lure me deeper into his world?

These unsettling questions of mine remained a mystery.
