Chapter Eleven
Something about Julia didn’t sit right with me.
Claire felt it too.
She never said it out loud, but I noticed the way she watched Julia. Her eyes would narrow whenever Julia spoke, her lips pressing into a firm line. It wasn’t mistrust, Claire was cautious, not irrational. And if she was uneasy about Julia, there had to be a reason.
We both sensed something was off, but neither of us could pinpoint exactly what it was. Julia never did anything outright suspicious, at least, not that we could prove. But there was an air about her, an invisible thread of tension whenever she was around.
Then, one night, Claire followed her.
She didn’t tell me beforehand. When she finally did, her voice shook as she described everything she had seen.
\---
Claire's breath came in slow, measured intervals as she trailed Julia at a safe distance. The night air carried a slight chill, sending occasional shivers down her spine, but she ignored it. Her focus was locked onto Julia, tracking her every move.
Julia moved with purpose, her strides confident and deliberate. She wasn’t just sneaking out for fresh air—every step she took was calculated, as though she had rehearsed this path before. She wasn’t wandering. She had a destination in mind.
The streets were eerily quiet. Most shops had closed, their darkened windows reflecting the glow of streetlights. Occasionally, a neon sign flickered, humming softly in the background. The distant hum of traffic was the only sign of life in the city, yet even that seemed subdued, like the world itself was holding its breath.
Claire kept to the shadows, her footsteps light against the pavement. Whenever Julia hesitated at an intersection, Claire ducked behind a parked car or slipped into a doorway, heart hammering in her chest.
Then Julia turned a corner and disappeared into a narrow alley.
Claire stopped.
She hesitated, knowing that following too soon would be a mistake. If she was caught now, she wouldn’t have time to explain herself and Julia would know she had been followed, and any chance of uncovering her secret would be lost.
But if she waited too long, she might lose her entirely.
A cold breeze swept through the street, rustling the leaves in the gutter. Claire took a deep breath, forcing her body to move forward. Step by step, she inched closer to the alley, pressing herself against the rough brick wall as she peered around the corner.
That’s when she saw him.
A man stood at the far end of the alley, tall and imposing, his broad shoulders squared as though he owned the very ground he stood on.
The dim streetlight cast long shadows across his figure, accentuating the sharp angles of his face. His tailored black suit, crisp and expensive, fit him perfectly, exuding wealth and authority.
But it wasn’t just his appearance that sent a chill down Claire’s spine. It was the way he carried himself—the quiet confidence, the air of control that surrounded him like an invisible force.
He was dangerous.
And Claire knew his name before she even heard his voice.
Alessandro.
A name spoken in whispers. A name that carried weight, power, and danger.
Her fingers curled into fists as she pressed herself further against the wall, her pulse racing.
"Are you sure no one followed you?" Alessandro’s voice was smooth, controlled—too controlled, as if he already knew the answer but wanted to test her.
Julia scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "No one followed me."
Claire bit the inside of her cheek, forcing herself to remain still.
Alessandro let out a hum of approval and stepped closer to Julia. "Good. We don’t want any interruptions."
Julia exhaled sharply, her impatience clear. "You said you had information for me. I don’t have all night."
A smirk tugged at the corner of Alessandro’s lips. "Patience, Julia. What I have to tell you will change your life."
Julia arched a skeptical eyebrow. "I’m listening."
Alessandro tilted his head slightly, his eyes gleaming with something unreadable.
"Tell me, Julia… have you ever wondered why Adrianna has everything while you have nothing?"
Julia stiffened. "What are you talking about?"
Alessandro took a slow, deliberate step forward. "She stole your place. Your life. Everything that should have been yours."
Julia let out a dry laugh, but it lacked conviction. "That’s ridiculous."
"Is it?" Alessandro’s voice was almost hypnotic, smooth and persuasive. "Think about it. You’ve always been in the background. Overlooked. Ignored. And Adrianna? She has everything. The wealth, the power, the respect."
Claire saw the way Julia's arms tightened around herself.
"You work twice as hard," Alessandro continued, his voice dropping lower as if he were drawing her into a secret. "You do everything right. Yet somehow, she always wins. She always comes out on top."
Julia’s breathing hitched.
Alessandro leaned in slightly, his voice a near whisper. "Deep down, you know I’m right."
Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating.
Claire felt the weight of it pressing down on her, even from where she stood.
Then, in a quiet voice, Julia asked, "If what you’re saying is true… What do you want from me?"
Alessandro’s smirk deepened, his satisfaction evident. "Help me, and I’ll make sure you get everything you deserve."
Julia swallowed hard. "And what exactly do I deserve?"
Alessandro took another slow step toward her, his voice dripping with temptation. "Power. Wealth. And Nicholas."
Claire’s stomach twisted into knots.
Julia’s body went rigid. "Nicholas?"
Alessandro’s grin widened. "Oh yes. Adrianna has him now, but not for long. Help me, Julia, and he’ll be yours."
Claire’s breath caught in her throat.
Nicholas.
That was what Alessandro was using to manipulate her.
Julia had always been drawn to Nicholas. Claire had seen the way her eyes lingered on him when she thought no one was looking, the way her expression darkened whenever Adrianna was near him.
She couldn’t see Julia’s face now, but she didn’t have to. She could feel the battle raging inside her.
Temptation. Doubt. Hesitation.
Alessandro had set the perfect trap, and Julia was standing at the edge, staring down into it.
Then, in a barely audible voice, Julia whispered, "What do I have to do?"
Alessandro chuckled, a dark, satisfied sound. "Now that’s the right question."
Claire knew she couldn’t stay any longer.
She had heard enough.
Adrenaline surged through her veins as she turned, moving as quickly and quietly as she could. Every step felt like an eternity. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears, drowning out everything else.
The cold night air stung her face, but she didn’t stop.
She had to get to me. I can no longer wait to confirm my suspicion.
