Chapter 93

Chapter 93

Oscar's surgery went smoothly. While waiting outside the operating room, I received a message: [Paul and James suddenly fell ill. During their medical parole, their conditions worsened, and they died.]

I was shocked to see this news.

In a society ruled by law, if the police followed the trail from Paul, they would definitely uncover the mastermind behind everything. But unexpectedly, in less than a month, the people who should have been interrogated had died under mysterious circumstances.

There wasn't even any news about whether they had trafficked others, or about contacting the embassy to assist with the investigation.

The mastermind had been doing this kind of thing for years. I should have realized that simply sending Paul and James to prison was like throwing them back into the ocean, and might have even exposed myself and made enemies.

I walked to the end of the corridor and made a phone call.

"Ms. Wilson, should we keep investigating? The authorities charged the two of them with extortion, but they're both dead now. I'm afraid it'll be hard to dig any deeper." The person on the other end calmly analyzed the situation for me.

I sighed and had to put the matter aside for now: "Not for now. Has Sophia's charge been confirmed?"

There was a moment of silence on the other end: "A few days ago, someone in the police station's records room accidentally started a small fire while smoking. I'm afraid the evidence has been destroyed. Right now, she's only being detained for intentional assault. She'll probably be released soon. It seems someone is working hard to protect her. We don't have any solid information yet."

My face showed no expression as I stared at the flashing red light of the operating room, unconsciously rubbing my fingers: "It's okay. Let's hold off for now. I'll make new arrangements for what comes next."

If Sophia really does get out, I'll make her regret it.

After hanging up, I walked back to the operating room and sat down in a chair, thinking carefully. The Brown Family members were already in trouble themselves, so who was trying to bail out Sophia?

"Emily, are you okay?" Robert seemed to notice I was deep in thought and asked carefully.

I smiled and shook my head at him: "It's nothing, just some work issues. I've already had my people handle it."

Robert nodded slightly: "That's good. If anything comes up, don't carry it all yourself. I still have some connections I can use."

I understood he wanted to make it up to me more, for Gregory and for the Brown Family, but it really wasn't necessary. He never owed me anything. He only owed Oscar.

I could only sigh inwardly, hoping that one day Oscar could make peace with Robert. Robert had at least some genuine feelings for him. What Oscar couldn't let go of was just the past.

My thoughts returned to the phone call. Paul and James had died so easily - it seemed their backer was no simple matter. But it also proved they weren't fearless. Killing two people wasn't that easy, and the fact that they put effort into it showed they were also afraid of causing trouble for themselves.

If only I were in Solstice, investigating might be easier. Here, without solid connections, I had no resources to draw on.

Maybe after Oscar gets out, he'll have some ideas.

The red light in the operating room finally went out. I helped Robert quickly stand up and waited at the closed operating room door.

The concern in Robert's eyes seemed genuine as he stared nervously at the closed door, anxiously stroking the cane in his hand.

I smiled to comfort him: "Don't worry. The doctor is the best, and the medicine is the best, too. He should be fine."

Robert nodded at me: "Right. He'll definitely be fine. He has to be fine."

More than ten minutes later, the doctor came out first. Robert rushed ahead of me to ask, "How was Oscar's surgery? No problems, right?"

The doctor removed his mask: "The surgery was perfect. If he recovers well, there basically won't be any scars. Don't worry."

The surgical bed was also wheeled out. I quickly went forward. The anesthesia was still in effect. Oscar lay quietly on the bed with an oxygen tube, eyes closed, face a bit pale.

I didn't dare call out to him. I just helped Robert follow them back to the hospital room.

The doctor patiently explained the precautions to me. I recorded everything in my phone's notes and reminded him that if any problems came up later, I could call him directly.

Oscar slowly regained consciousness about half an hour later. When I saw his hand move, I quickly went forward and placed his hand in my palm to prevent him from moving too much and dislodging the needle.

Robert also sat by the bed, gently calling out: "Oscar, are you awake? How do you feel now?"

Oscar seemed to want to turn over, his consciousness still a bit unclear: "Is the surgery done?"

I stepped forward to keep him from moving around: "The surgery is done. The doctor said it was a resounding success. You can't move around. Does it hurt?"

Oscar's eyes slowly focused, and when he saw my face, he smiled at me: "I don't hurt. I don't feel anything at all. As a man, who's afraid of pain?"
