Chapter 135
I quickly understood Oscar's hint.
Our car didn't leave immediately. Instead, it stayed in the shadows with the lights off, waiting quietly.
Under the streetlight, Adrian's figure soon appeared. He took out his phone, seemingly to call a ride. After tapping on it, he stood by the roadside with his head down, waiting for the car.
Someone must have called him because he put the phone to his ear. I could see his profile with a smile on it. A black sedan pulled up right in front of him. He opened the door and got straight in.
After the car ahead drove off, Oscar quickly followed.
"You want to see where he's going?" I asked, confused.
Oscar shook his head and glanced at me with a smile. "I don't know where he's going either. That depends on where Jeffrey wants to take him."
My eyes widened. "Jeffrey's driving that car? He's just taking him away like that? Isn't he afraid Adrian will notice?"
Oscar chuckled softly. "Jeffrey probably won't think that much. His daughter is his weakness. When I let him go, I gave him the latest update on his daughter. Right now, he probably wants to drag Adrian down with him."
The car gradually left the city, heading toward the wilderness. Finally, it stopped in a desolate area.
Before long, Adrian stumbled out of the car and ran in the opposite direction. From a distance, I saw Jeffrey in the driver's seat, his face covered in blood under his baseball cap, his head slammed hard against the steering wheel.
Adrian kept looking back as he ran. The roar of an engine echoed, and blinding headlights swung around, locking onto Adrian as he ran, speeding toward him.
Adrian quickly dodged behind a tree. The car's front end caved in as it crashed hard into the tree.
Jeffrey had lost all reason. He hit the gas and reversed. Seeing Adrian trying to cross the median to hide by the roadside, he floored it again, ramming toward him once more.
Just then, a white SUV came speeding from the opposite lane, its blinding headlights blazing. A sharp screech filled the air as the SUV crashed through the median barrier and headed straight for the black sedan, not slowing down at all.
Under the headlights, I could clearly see Adrian's face, full of terror. When he saw the white SUV, his eyes nearly popped out, and he screamed hoarsely, "Vivian, don't—"
A violent crash. The white SUV rammed the black sedan, crushing it against the tree. The sedan was completely mangled. The SUV's front end lifted up, its engine still roaring, wheels spinning wildly.
I was shocked by the scene. No wonder Oscar had been so calm watching Jeffrey go after Adrian. "What's going on? Did you know she'd come?"
Oscar smiled. "I thought she might come to save him, but I didn't expect her to be this violent."
"Let's go check it out. If we don't go now, someone might actually die," I said.
Oscar held me back. "Wait a bit longer. Adrian's so stubborn. If things don't go this far, what if he still won't admit it?"
Adrian quickly rushed to pull the SUV's door open. The door was so badly damaged that it wouldn't budge. His face turned bright red as he screamed with all his strength, "Vivian, Vivian? Don't scare me, wake up."
The SUV door finally opened. Adrian pulled Vivian, who was slumped over the steering wheel, out of the car. Her face was cut by shattered glass, blood trickling down her cheeks—a terrifying sight.
"Vivian, wake up, Vivian—" Adrian panicked, his hand hovering over her face, not daring to touch it, only able to cry out for help.
The black sedan's door slowly opened. Jeffrey, his face covered in blood, looked like a demon now, his eyes devoid of reason, filled only with hatred. He staggered out of the car, dragging what looked like a deformed leg, practically crawling toward Adrian.
"Adrian, you devil, you're going to pay for my daughter's life." Jeffrey raised a huge wrench in his hand and swung it at Adrian.
Adrian dodged to the side. Unable to worry about Vivian, he grabbed a rock from the roadside and hurled it at Jeffrey's face.
Jeffrey was a beat too slow and couldn't dodge. The rock hit him square in his bloodied head. He didn't even touch it, just kept coming forward, raising the wrench again.
Adrian dodged and shouted coldly, "Jeffrey, are you crazy? Killing someone in the street—you think this is Solstice?"
Jeffrey's eyes were vicious as he closed in step by step. "I am crazy. You drove me crazy, Adrian. Go to hell."
Adrian backed up, tripping over something. Jeffrey swung at him again. He had no choice but to raise his arm to protect his head. The wrench came down hard on his arm.
Adrian cried out in pain, gritting his teeth as he used his uninjured hand to desperately catch the wrench as Jeffrey swung it down again.
Oscar quickly pushed open the car door. I followed him out.
"Stop!" Oscar strode toward them.
A dull thud rang out. Before we could get close, Vivian emerged from the shadows, a brick in her hand. Silently, she came up behind Jeffrey and struck him hard on the back of the head.
Jeffrey collapsed, his fate unknown.
Under the streetlight's glow, Vivian's expression was fierce. She threw the bloodied brick aside and turned to look at us. "Just to force us, you were going to stand by and watch someone die?"
Adrian followed her gaze and looked at us too. "Oscar, did you send Jeffrey?"
Oscar didn't explain. He just looked at them calmly and said, "Now, besides questioning me, don't you have something else you want to tell me?"
