Chapter 116
After dinner, I went back to my room and sent out two quick messages on my phone. Once I got replies, I pulled out my laptop.
I opened the computer, and my fingers moved skillfully across the keyboard. Oscar's company system had very professional anti-intrusion equipment that could indeed block most Trojans, viruses, and attacks. But he and Michael's company had insiders on both sides—this was an open secret. So getting into their internal system was a piece of cake.
I didn't poke around their company finances. Instead, I quickly locked onto Adrian's personal account, rapidly browsing through everything from the year he first appeared—his resume, financial status, even all his personal connections.
It's not that I didn't trust Oscar; I just trusted my own judgment more.
I flipped through page after page. His records were too clean, too normal. Everything showed a self-made man who appeared suddenly and built his career from scratch. After meeting Oscar, they supported each other and grew the company until they became Solstice's only two moguls. His bank accounts were spotless—almost too spotless. It made me wonder if I'd been wrong all along.
Someone who isn't after money or power—that proves there's something else they care about more.
I believed he definitely had secrets nobody knew about. The cleaner his record, the more suspicious he became.
My eyes were fixed on his travel records. Over the past five years, whether for work or vacation, he came to Lumaria every March without fail.
I narrowed my eyes slightly and clicked the mouse. Each time he landed at different addresses, but there was one place he always stopped at for two days—this very city.
This kind of coincidence could only be intentional.
"What did you find?" Oscar's voice appeared behind me, soft and sudden.
My instinct was to close the laptop screen. My hand stopped mid-air, then I casually put the computer back in place, feeling inexplicably guilty.
I turned around and smiled at Oscar: "Don't get me wrong, I just wanted to see if I could dig up something myself. It doesn't mean I don't trust you."
Oscar smiled back at me: "Actually, if you logged in with my account, you could see much more."
We smiled at each other as a subtle atmosphere spread through the room.
He was afraid I didn't trust him, I was afraid he'd think I didn't trust him. We both wanted to prove ourselves to each other, but were too clumsy to make it sound right.
"What I mean is, you can help me investigate. I really want to find some flaw in all this. I just called Adrian again, but in the end, I still couldn't get anything out of him." Oscar quickly smiled and explained to me.
I touched my nose and smiled a bit sheepishly: "Maybe... probably... perhaps, I directly opened your main system, which should show me more than your account would. That's not important—what's important is I actually did find something."
I adjusted the computer to a better angle and used the mouse to point to his travel records, finally marking it with a red line: "I've compiled all the places he's been to repeatedly. Over the past five years, he has flown to Lumaria once every year, and this city is where he always stops. Three years ago, did your company already have business trips here?"
Oscar thought for a moment, then said slowly: "Could it be because I started planning five years ago?"
I was speechless.
That was indeed the most reasonable explanation. So the only suspicious point I'd spotted suddenly wasn't suspicious anymore. I looked at him with a bitter smile: "It can't be that he just doesn't like me and is deliberately targeting me, right? So I think there must be some reason he has to do this."
Oscar walked to my side and smiled at me: "You won't find anything investigating like this, and I can't get anything from calling him. So I already told him to wrap up company matters and fly over. When he gets here, we can just ask him directly whatever we want to know."
I looked at him questioningly: "If you ask him so directly, won't he feel like you don't trust him? You know, working together, once trust is gone, things will never be the same as before."
Oscar reached out and gently stroked from the top of my head to the ends of my hair: "If it's him, I won't let it go. If it's not him, the trust is still gone. Either way, we probably can't work together anymore. I have to say, if someone else designed all this, this plan hits multiple targets with one shot—it's really clever."
I lowered my head and reached back to hold his hand resting on my shoulder. The current situation was too delicate. If this had happened before we confirmed our feelings, my cooperation with him would have ended too.
"Let's not think too much about it. Tell me, when you said he should come over, what did he say?" Since it had already happened, I'd just face it. I had to resolve this properly.
The smile on Oscar's lips had faded considerably: "He agreed. The day after tomorrow, he'll be here."
"Okay, if it's not convenient, I can just meet him myself. You can stay out of it." I couldn't just assume the person behind this, whether Adrian was based solely on Jeffrey. I still needed to leave some room. If it turned out not to be him after we asked, maybe his relationship with Oscar could be smoothed over a bit.
Oscar clearly didn't think so: "I'll go with you. There's nothing to avoid. I need to figure out the truth too, so Michael won't think I have other motives toward you."
I didn't say more and just nodded. I understood Oscar pretty well—he wanted to prove himself, and I was giving him the chance.
Oscar patted my shoulder: "Get some sleep, don't overthink it."
I stood up. Now that we were staying here alone, we didn't need to deliberately stay in the same room. After saying goodnight to each other, he turned and left.
Since he told me not to think too much about it, I'd put it aside for now. Once Adrian arrived, we could get to the bottom of things.
But before Adrian arrived, an unexpected visitor came to see me.
"Emily, when Vivian heard about your car accident, she kept saying she'd come visit when she had time, but was worried it would be too sudden, so I brought her over." Nina had a smile on her face as she pointed to Vivian behind her.
I quickly stood up to welcome them in: "Vivian, what a surprise. Really, I'm fine. I feel bad that you made a special trip."
Vivian's smile was gracious: "You're being too polite. Although we've only met once, I really felt an instant connection with you. I wanted to come when I saw the news, but I thought you should rest quietly in the hospital, so I waited a couple more days. As soon as I had time, I found Nina to bring me over."
Nina smiled and sat down beside me: "Emily, you need to get completely better soon. She's still waiting for you to make a decision about that project she mentioned last time."
Vivian smiled calmly and looked at me slowly: "There's no rush for that. Emily, I heard there were some other issues on the day of the accident. If you need help, please don't be shy. I do have some connections."
Benjamin and Vivian knew each other—I just didn't know what their relationship was like. I tested the waters: "What if it involves Mr. White? Could you help with that too?"
