Chapter 33

Rebecca’s phone rang, jolting her from her slumber. Had she fallen asleep again? She must have blacked out after the wild makeout session with William.

Her phone rang again. Could it be her editor? Did the senator try to sue them again?

She abruptly sat up in the darkened room and scanned for her silver iPhone.

There it is!

Her phone was sitting right at the edge of William’s white dressing table. He was nowhere to be seen in, but she could detect a faint smell of bacon coming from outside the bedroom.

He must be in the kitchen again, man that guy has an appetite.

Rebecca slid off the bed and to her surprise, she fell on her knees, landing on the fluffy cream-colored carpeted floor. Her legs were as weak as Jell-O from all the lovemaking.

Was it really love making though? she wondered as she crawled on all fours over to the table before pulling herself up onto the vanity stool.

Oof, that was rather ungraceful, she thought as she slid the green icon on her screen to answer the call.

 “John?”

“Becca…where are you?” John asked, his voice breathless. It sounded to Rebecca as if he had been running. “I’ve been looking for you.”

Rebecca caught sight of herself in the dressing mirror and almost let out a scream. Who was that crazed looking woman with puffed hair staring back at her?

She cleared her throat, “I’m at William Silverman’s place…” Her voice was barely audible.

“Send me your location, I’ll come and get you. There’s something I need to tell you.” The line went dead.

Rebecca had an inkling as to what John wanted to tell her. She sent her location to John and set her phone down before reaching for a remote on the table. A click on the button and the dark grey full-length curtains to the French windows began to automatically pull back, allowing sunlight to stream into the room.

The room was spacious, slightly smaller than her SoHo apartment but definitely a lot neater than her place.

Rebecca quickly scanned for her clothes and spotted them neatly folded at the foot of the king-sized bed. There was no doubt that William was a much neater person than she was. Jean used to joke that her apartment resembled a junkyard.

Jean!

She was just about to call Jean when a voice called out from behind, causing her to jump slightly.

“Hello beautiful,” it was William and he had just entered the room. He was fully dressed now, in a crisp white polo shirt and blue jeans while she was still naked as a newborn.

She smiled at him as he came over and laid his hands on her bare shoulders. Her nudity made her feel extremely vulnerable, and she tried to get up, but he easily pushed her back down on the stool.

William bent over and kissed the back of her neck, “Relax, I made breakfast.”

She stopped him, “William, I need to ask you something.” It was now or never. She had missed the chance to ask him last night and if he started touching her again, she knew that her brain would stop functioning rationally once more.

Damn! Why do I have to be so horny for this guy?

“Fire away.”

“The other night at the penthouse, I saw someone with you in the living room…”

William had been sensually massaging her shoulders up to this point but upon hearing what she said, he abruptly removed his hands, as if the mere touch of her skin scorched him.

He took a few steps back and sat himself on the bed, resting his clasped hands on his knees, “What did you see?”

His tone had changed, it was now dark and deadly, all playfulness that he had carried with him had flown out the window. And from the mirror, Rebecca could see the change in his eyes as well. They had become eerily unfathomable. She could not tell what he was thinking.

She turned around, not giving a damn about how she looked at the moment and went over to him. If this had been last night, she was sure William would have grabbed her bare butt but right now, he sat, not moving, still as a statue. She knelt down before him and cupped his face gently in her hands. His jaw was rough, bristles of his facial hair rubbed at her palm.

“I saw you two arguing. Is there something I should know?”

William’s eyebrows furrowed and he closed his eyes, letting out an exasperated sigh, his usual calm demeanor seemingly cracked a little.

Rebecca waited for what seemed forever before William finally opened his eyes. He did not face her but instead reached over for her clothes, pressing them into her hands. He did not want to talk.

“The food is getting cold, “ he said and pulled her bra from the stack of clothes on her hands.

A wave of disappointment washed over Rebecca as William proceeded to clasp her bra.

“William, you can be honest with me,” she tried again as he continued dressing her. She allowed him to put on her blouse, waiting for him to finally open up to her. But he did not.

So, this is how it’s going to be, she thought. She got up and slipped on her pants as William continued to sit silently on the bed, not meeting her eye.

I shouldn’t have come, she thought. What on earth was I thinking? Disappointment turned to anger.

“I have to go. But if you change your mind, you know where to find me,” she said, trying to hold back her own emotions.

She turned to leave but stopped short in front of the bedroom door, giving him one more chance, to be honest with her. William remained silent.

Rebecca shook her head in exasperation and walked out, leaving William sitting alone in his bedroom. She had a feeling they would not be speaking to each other anytime soon.
