Ghosted: Things Move A Little Faster (II)

Ghosted: Things Move A Little Faster (II)
“Don’t start this shit now.” Heubert said, throwing up his hands. “I have never met Molly before tonight, and you know it you damn nut.”

“If I’m such a nut, why don’t you divorce me and just marry her then?!”

“Ma-what?! What the hell are you talking about, hm? How the hell did you even steer the conversation this way? You know they’re together. You just like stirring up a mess for no reason.”

Chelsea rolled her eyes. “Please, like somebody’s going to pick Mr. Tall, Pale and Awkward over you."

“I’m not this pale usually,” Robert muttered.

Hearing him, Molly glared at Chelsea. “You really need to get a damn chill pill. I am not interested in your husband, and he’s not interested in me. He’s like sixty, no offense to Heubert.”

“None taken; it was a compliment to me.”

She smiled softly and then pointed at her stomach. “Good, but I mean, hello, Chelsea? I’m knocked up by this dude over here, remember? Oh, and let me tell you, I’d pick Mr. Tall, Pale and Awkward over anyone else, any day. He’s sweet, thoughtful, and even risked having to deal with you so that we can get some help. So, stop being an insecure weirdo and provide healthy input to the conversation. And if that’s too much for you, you can go home willingly or get your ass saged out of my apartment. You may be among the living, but with that attitude I think an exception will be made.” Chelsea gasped and Molly snapped her fingers. “Also, let me add that Robert isn’t some diamond in the rough. You should see him without a shirt, and even though I’ve only seen it once, he has the most beautiful pen–”

“Woah!” Robert shouted, covering her mouth. “I think she gets the point, but, um, thank you.”

Molly pulled his hands from her mouth. “Right. My bad. Went a little too far at the end,” she said meekly.

Ignoring them, Chelsea turned to her husband. “Are you just going to sit there and let her talk to me like that?”

“Absolutely, because she’s right,” he replied, folding his arms across his chest. “I love you, you know that, but I’m sick of this. I’m too old and too tired to keep going on this ride with you.” He grabbed her hands in his. “Have I ever once been unfaithful to you or given you a reason to doubt me?”

“No…”

“Then knock it off. They need our help. Do you remember how hard it was for you? You’re the only person who truly will understand what she's going through. Don’t you wish you had had someone there who could have helped you?” Saying nothing, Chelsea stormed from the apartment, and he sighed. “Sorry about that.”

“It’s fine.”

“It’s not, but let–” The door opened, and Chelsea reappeared. She held out a slip of paper to Molly. “The number for my doctor. She was wonderful.”

“Thank you,” Molly said

She nodded in response. Walking over to her husband, Chelsea twisted her lips to the side. “I’m going to work on it.” He grinned and gave her a hug. She faced Molly. “Our home number is on the back. Call. I can’t say I’ll be the best conversationalist, but I’ll try.” Patting her husband's shoulder, she walked to the door. “I’ll be in the car.”

After she left, Molly stared at him with wide eyes. “What the hell was that?”

He laughed. “That’s my wife’s way of saying she likes you. People call me a grump, but we’re really two peas in a pod.”

“You don’t seem like a grump to me.”

He smiled. “Give it time. Could I speak to you alone for a moment, Robert?”

“Yeah, sure.”

The two men exited the apartment and Heubert started to pace. “Something's wrong,” he said.

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“Something is wrong with Molly’s pregnancy. I didn’t want to say it in front of her, but I noticed it the moment I entered the apartment. My wife wasn’t just being mean-spirited when she said that Molly is a lot bigger than typically seen this early. I’m worried.”

Ice poured through Robert’s veins, and he shook his head. “Are you telling me that something is something wrong with our baby?”

“No. I’m telling you that for as abnormal as this situation is, your situation is even more so. There’s an aurora coming off of her that is almost as strong as yours, but it’s not filled with anger. It’s something else I can’t place. Just promise me that you’ll make sure she schedules an ultrasound immediately. I’ll make sure to take a peek at the sonograms to see if I can’t catch something that may be missed by the eyes of the living.” He exhaled. “I need to get going, and you need to go in there and spend some time with her.”

“Wait, you can’t tell me something like that and just expect me to in there and pretend nothing is wrong.”

“I’m not asking you to. I do think that, for right now, stressing Molly out with what I told you, then disappearing is a horrible idea. It could be nothing, and I’m just an old ghost imagining things, but until her ultrasound, there's nothing that can be done about it.” Lifting his watch, he showed Robert the time. “You don’t have much left; do you really want to spend it out here with me?” He turned Robert’s body and nudged him towards the door. “We start training in three weeks, make sure you’re ready.”
