Chapter 748 Stupidity

Chapter 748 Stupidity

Victor, on the other hand, was secretly amazed by her stupidity.

If he had found this money, he would have kept half of it, then found a way to let someone else discover the rest. That way, the other person would handle everything perfectly for him.

And even if it was discovered, the police would only find that other person.

As for money laundering, that would be a separate matter.

"How did you get the note?"

"I picked it up while cleaning the table."

After saying this, Zara probably realized this wouldn't sound believable, so she quickly added, "I swear, everything I'm saying is true. If I'm lying, let me get hit by a car and die."

Victor looked at her and smiled strangely. "That oath might actually come true."

Although he couldn't tell she was lying, what she said was too bizarre. An ordinary person, because of a note, went to some random place and picked up two million dollars? Wasn't that ridiculous?

Did Blake do this?

What was his purpose?

To make him go to "45 Starlight Avenue"?

What exactly was at that location?

"Where's the note?"

"I lost it. I was probably so distracted that I forgot where I put it."

Victor considered himself hard to fool, and what Zara said, including her expressions, all seemed too normal.

But if she wasn't lying and everything was true, could it really be such a coincidence?

If she was deceiving him, she must be acting on someone's instructions, and even if that person wasn't Blake, they must be connected to Blake.

However, what Victor really doubted was that with Blake's cunning, how could he possibly come up with such a story full of holes?

Would anyone actually believe it?

It seemed that to test Blake, he'd have to see his expression when he met Zara.

"This isn't a small amount of money. I need to prepare. Come home with me."

Hearing this, Zara looked noticeably happier.

Then they took a cab to Blake's house.

When they arrived, Zara stared at Victor's residence with eyes as wide as saucers.

"Your house is this fancy? Money laundering pays this well?"

Then, thinking about Victor asking her for a 30% fee, she couldn't help but sigh—it really was profitable.

Victor just had her push him home.

He was eager to know what expression Zara would have when she saw Blake.

Learning that Victor was home, Barbara was quite happy.

But when she saw Zara, she clearly froze for a moment.

"Victor, who is she?"

"My friend, named Zara. Mom, where's Dad?"

"In his room. I'll call him. You two sit down."

After Victor had Blake come out, he observed Zara's expression.

When Zara saw Blake, her eyes instinctively looked away. Seeing this, Victor narrowed his eyes. Just as he thought! The two knew each other.

Victor was about to make introductions when Blake waved his hand and looked at Zara, saying carefully,

"Zara."

And Zara lowered her head, not daring to look at Blake, saying hesitantly,

"Mr. Armstrong."

Now Victor was confused. He couldn't quite read the situation anymore. What was going on? It was like a soap opera scene of a long-lost father and daughter reuniting.

He was genuinely afraid Blake would say something like, "Where have you been all these years? I've been looking so hard for you."

Victor didn't know what to say for a moment. Fortunately, Barbara was there. Barbara asked,

"You two know each other?"

"Yes." Blake nodded, then looked at Zara and asked, "Zara, where have you been all these years?"

There it was. Victor looked exasperated. In the end, he couldn't escape it—the most dramatic moment had arrived. He wasn't worried about suddenly having a sister; he was just afraid Barbara couldn't handle it.

He turned to look at Barbara and found her face had already fallen.

Zara also noticed Barbara's expression. She quickly said,

"Mrs. Armstrong, you've misunderstood. Mr. Armstrong sponsored my education before."

Hearing this, Barbara's expression softened considerably, but Victor narrowed his eyes. Again, it was too much of a coincidence. Everything was too coincidental. He found it hard not to suspect Blake.

As Zara explained, Victor learned the whole story. Zara was one of the students Blake had sponsored, but she had never liked studying. Seeing other kids like her with excellent grades while hers were poor made her feel guilty.

She felt she was wasting Blake's money and felt ashamed, believing she had let down Blake's expectations. Over time, this guilt crushed her, and she began to avoid it. Eventually, she chose to leave without saying goodbye.

This was also why she didn't dare look at Blake just now—because of guilt.

After saying all this, Zara stood up to leave. Blake asked her to stay for dinner. Seeing Blake's expression, Zara didn't refuse.

After dinner, the two left the house. Zara suddenly said to him,

"I've decided not to launder the money. I'm going to turn myself in. I just found the money—I didn't commit a crime. The police won't do anything to me. If they make me pay back the money, I'll work and pay it back slowly."

Backfired, it really backfired. Victor never expected things would turn out this way. He was about to try to persuade her.

Zara looked at him earnestly and said,

"I won't try to convince you to turn yourself in with me, and I won't mention anything about you either. But I still hope you'll stop doing money laundering. Money laundering is a crime."

"You have such a good father. You should feel grateful. And you're not short of money. I don't know what led you down this criminal path, but I hope you won't disappoint your father."

"That's all I have to say. I hope you'll think about it."

Without giving Victor a chance to speak, she turned and left.

"You—"

Victor pointed at Zara in disbelief. Had he just been lectured?

How did things suddenly turn out this way?

He had so much he wanted to say. He wanted to point at her nose and tell her:

How dare you lecture me when you don't know anything?

He'd rather be like her without parents than have a father who constantly schemed to turn his son into a murderer.

Victor took a deep breath to calm himself down. This was the first time he'd felt truly angry. How absurd.

After calming down, he returned home. Barbara said Blake was waiting for him in the study. Victor narrowed his eyes. What did this mean? Was he trying to confront him?

Arriving at the study, Blake was standing by the window looking outside. He didn't turn around when Victor entered.

Neither of them spoke. After a long while, Blake finally turned around and asked,

"Why her?"

Hearing this, Victor pretended not to know what he meant and asked, "What do you mean?"

"You know what I mean."

Victor frowned and asked back, "You think I would kill her?"

Blake nodded.

Absurd! Absolutely absurd!
