Chapter 12

The hand that was trapped in Kaden’s death grip felt like there was this abnormal, prickly stinging sensation around it. I look down only to realize that there are a few electric sparks shooting out of his hand. That’s the reason for the stinging sensation in my hand. What is he trying to do?

“ Kaden, Please let go of the girl. You are going to regret it later if you hurt her.” Deon tried to reason with him.

“ Kaden is not here right now; you are talking to the Dark Lord.” This strange, possessed voice came from Kaden, but his lips never moved once.

“ Kaden would just have to face the consequences of his actions after I released his body back into his control and he found his precious little mate dead in his hands.” As soon as the voice stopped, the grip on my hand was released and was now around my neck. Kaden slowly lift’s me off the ground by my neck, with my feet dangling only inches away from the ground. I gasp for air, squirm and kick, trying to get free.

I notice a fireball coming right at my face, but slams into Kaden’s back instead. I couldn’t see where the fireball came from because my vision started to get hazy from the lack of oxygen. Just when it felt like I was about to pass out, something awakened withing me. This strong urge to let go of the burning, icy sensation that been building up inside of me. Without thinking and without knowing how, I let out this huge explosion of blue fire. It came out with such brute force that it blasted everyone across the garden. The explosion of flames turned into huge, sharp shards of crystal ice scattered across the garden. The guys build barriers made out of fire to protect them, but it weren’t strong enough. My ice pierced right through the barriers. One went right through Kaden’s shirt, pinning him to the ground. I fall to my knees, panting out of breath. In the corner of my eye, I notice Kaden rising from the ground but there is no strength left in me. I am completely drained and exhausted from fight back. The last thing I remember was Kaden shouting my name, his voice back to normal and not like he was possessed, and then everything completely went dark around me.

( Kaden )

“What the fuck happened?” I was sitting at the table eating breakfast with my men and Meara, and the next moment I was here laying on the grass.

I look around me and notice sharp shards of ice scattered across the lawn, one pinning me to the ground through my shirt. I reach to remove it when a sudden, sharp pain shoots through my shoulder. “Fuck!” I grunted, frustrated. My arm is fucking dislocated. With one swift movement, I pressed hard into the ground, and it slipped back in with ease. But not without pain, causing me to grunt painfully. It is going to be painful for a while, but it is tolerable.

Now able to remove the ice pinning me to the ground, I stood up, taking in my surroundings. It looked like a bomb went off, leaving a huge hole in the ground that was covered by frost.

“ Meara!” My mind instantly went to her. Where is she? The frost must have come from her. On the other side of where the explosion ended, I spotted her. She is on her knees, kneeling on the ground. I rush to her side just in time as she passes out. I pick her up in my arms. Her body is ice cold and lifeless, so I rush with her to the infirmary.

At the infirmary, the healers take her from me, asking me to leave. But I can’t leave her side. It pains me within. Deon came into the infirmary moments after the healers took Meara from me. “Thank goodness you are here! Please tell me what happened out there.”

“Don’t you remember?” Deon asked, confused.

“Remember what? The last thing I remembered was that we were busy eating, and the next moment I was on the grass.” Deon pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs heavily.

“For fuck sakes, Deon, tell me what happened.” I insisted.

“You crossed over to the dark side. Meara wanted to retreat to the library to start her search, but you stopped her. At first, we thought that you were just playing around, but when Meara called out in pain,

“Fuck. Please tell me I didn’t hurt her.” By the look on his face, I could tell that I was wrong.

“I am sorry, Kaden. You had her in the air by the throat, and that is when I threw one of my fireballs at you, but it didn’t so much as scratch you.” My legs go numb. Hearing that I, Kaden, the strongest elemental in the kingdom, had fiscally hurt his own mate. I slump down onto the ground as my legs give in from under me. It doesn’t sound like me. I don’t tolerate such actions in my kingdom, but Deon saw it with his own eyes, so it must be true. My poor mate. How will I ever make it up to her? The slightest chance I had of trying to convince her to stay with me has now been destroyed. She would never want to stay now, and I wouldn't blame her if she wanted to leave. Deon places a hand on my shoulder.

“Kaden, don’t be hard on yourself. It is not your fault. You couldn’t control it.”

“That is just the fucking thing. It was my fault! I was the one who kept her here. I was the one who forced her to stay when she wanted to return home. This would have never happened if I let her go.”

“But how could you have let her go? There is much at stake here.”

“If she hadn’t managed to release her powers today, we would have been doomed anyway. She would have been dead, and we all would be fucked!” I growled, frustrated.

Deon removes his hand from my shoulder, now grasping that what I said is actually true. If I had only let Meara go back home, there might still have been a chance for me to win her over, except for our bond. The safety of my kingdom does not rely on her, and I can’t expect her to give her life up to me and my kingdom.

“Your majesty, we have managed to revive her.” One of the healers notifies me.

“Where is she? I want to see her now.” I commanded.

“I will take your majesty to her, but she is still very weak. She is stable, but not out of danger yet. Her entire body froze over from the amount of ice she released. The amount of power she released was enough to kill anyone in most cases, but not her. Somehow, her body managed to build a fire barrier around her heart, keeping it from freezing over. But there is a chance that she still might not make it. Her body temperature is still very low and can drop even more if we can’t get it to go back to normal.” I follow the healer as she explains Meara’s situation to me. The healers were all stunned by Meara’s unique powers and how Fire and Ice managed to combine as one and work together as equals, creating Frost-Fire.

With weak legs, I go to Meara as she lays lifeless in my bed, looking like a true sleeping beauty. My sleeping beauty! I sit in the chair next to her, touching her hand with my fingers. Electric sparks erupt inside me. My power is mad and ready to destroy both of us at any moment. But this soothing coolness reaches me. She is the only person in the world who can do that to me. My powers calm down, and they go away quickly. I take my hand away. If she still has magic left in her, I don’t want to drain it out of her. An older healer returned with a few bottles of different potions, giving instructions to a younger nurse healer in training. “This one is for the mornings after breakfast, and this one is for the evenings, this one for after every meal, for at least three times a day.” She says this to the nurse as she gives me an angry glare.

“What are you still doing here?!” She says it gruffly. “If I am not mistaken, this is my sleeping chamber, and she is my mate, so I have every right to be in here.”

“You are going to kill her.” She looks at me with hatred in her eyes.

“I know you care for her, but you have to let her go before it is too late, and you will regret it for the rest of your life. She is weak and not from this world.
