Chapter 54

Chapter 54

Amelia's eyes were full of resentment, but facing James's stern gaze, she could only grit her teeth and apologize to me. "I'm sorry, Sophia. I wasn't thinking straight just now and said some nasty things. Please forgive me."

My voice was cold. "I can't forgive you on behalf of my dead child."

"Then do you want me to pay with my life?" Amelia exploded. "Will you only forgive me if I die?"

After saying this, she looked at James pitifully.

But James's eyes stayed on me the whole time, not even glancing at her.

She was putting on a one-woman show, now stuck in an awkward position. She covered her face and ran off.

Isabella followed her out.

As soon as they left, I immediately pushed James away.

James realized I'd been using him. His handsome face darkened, even showing some anger. "What do you take me for?"

I smirked. "You already know, so why ask?"

"You're really something." James bit the inside of his cheek, a hint of murderous intent flashing in his eyes.

James was always the one who schemed against others. No one ever got to scheme against him, especially not so blatantly. He must be furious inside.

I rolled my eyes. It'd be even better if he died of anger.

The doctor saw us at each other's throats and didn't dare come over.

James looked extremely irritated. He unbuttoned his suit jacket and glanced coldly at the doctor. "Can't you see she's dying? Get over here and check on her. Do I need to invite you personally?"

The doctor hurried over to examine me. When he touched my lower leg, I immediately cried out. "Doctor, don't touch there. It really hurts."

"I suspect it's a fracture. We'll need to take an X-ray to know for sure."

James said coldly, "Then hurry up."

The doctor called for a nurse to bring a stretcher, and they carefully moved me onto it.

After the examination, the doctor looked at the new X-rays with a serious expression. "Minor fracture in the left leg. You'll need a cast and hospitalization for a week, with regular follow-ups afterward. During this time, absolutely no weight-bearing and no getting out of bed."

Hearing this, James's face grew even darker.

I sighed.

Having to stay in the hospital for a week meant Andrew would have to handle all the follow-up work alone.

I didn't know what Amelia was thinking, but she came back.

She stood by my bed, tears still on her face, forcing out a concerned expression. "Sophia, this is all my fault. If it weren't for me..."

She wasn't genuinely concerned about me. Who knows what she was plotting by coming back.

The disgust in my heart couldn't be suppressed, and I didn't want to suppress it. I showed it directly.

"Shut up." I coldly interrupted her. "Drop that fake act. It makes me sick."

Amelia was thick-skinned. Even after I said that, she refused to leave and brought me a cup of water. "Sophia, have some water."

"No need." I turned my head away, too lazy to look at her. "Seeing you makes my injury hurt even more."

Amelia's eyes reddened as she looked at James pitifully. "James, I just wanted to make up for it..."

"You should go back." James's tone was indifferent, showing no intention of asking her to stay. "I'm enough here."

Amelia wanted to say more, but facing James's cold eyes, she didn't dare say anything else. She reluctantly turned and left the room.

The room finally quieted down. James sat in the chair by the bed and tucked in my blanket. "Are you hungry? I'll have someone bring you food."

"Not hungry." I closed my eyes, not wanting to interact with him much.

If it weren't for James, I wouldn't be targeted by Amelia.

Andrew probably noticed I hadn't returned for so long and called me.

I didn't want him to worry, so I made an excuse about being out having fun. He said he'd come find me, and I said it wasn't convenient.

He asked directly, "What happened?"

I was secretly surprised. How was this man so perceptive?

Seeing I couldn't hide it, I had to come clean. "My leg is fractured. I'm at the hospital."

"Which hospital? I'm coming over now." Andrew asked urgently.

I told him the hospital location, and he hung up.

James's tone was unfriendly. "You're injured, what's an outsider coming over for?"

I looked up at him. "If we're talking about outsiders, you're the outsider."

"A man who's about to become my ex-husband, how can you compare to my senior?"

"You two really have such deep feelings." James was being sarcastic.

I didn't avoid it at all and nodded. "Yes, we do."

James and I went back and forth until he was so angry his face turned dark, ending the conversation.

Not long after, the door opened and Andrew walked in carrying a thermos. Seeing the cast on my leg, his face immediately darkened. "How did you get hurt so badly?"

He quickly walked to the bedside, his voice full of concern. "Are you uncomfortable anywhere else? What did the doctor say?"

"It's nothing serious, just a fracture. A few days in the hospital and I'll be fine." I smiled at him, trying to reassure him.

Andrew placed the thermos on the bedside table and opened the lid. A rich aroma wafted out. "I specially bought you some soup. I hope drinking it will help you recover faster."

He poured a bowl of soup and carefully blew on it to cool it before handing it to me.

I took the bowl and sipped slowly, warmth spreading from my throat to my heart.

James sat to the side, his face growing darker and darker, the pressure around him frighteningly low.

He suddenly spoke. "Mr. Anderson, I'm here to take care of my wife. You still have things to do, why don't you head back first?"

Andrew glanced at him and said flatly, "I have nothing to do. I can stay here and chat with Sophia to keep her company."

"That's not necessary." James stood up and walked in front of Andrew, his tone carrying a barely noticeable hostility. "Sophia is my wife, so there's no need for you to worry."

Andrew frowned, not backing down at all. "Sophia is my junior. Taking care of her is also my responsibility."

James's eyes were cold. "Please leave. Too many people will affect Sophia's rest."

"Didn't you come with that Amelia of yours? Leaving her behind, won't she make a scene?" Andrew's smile was mocking. "You should go quickly, before she can't find you and comes here to disturb Sophia's rest."

James was furious. "What do you mean by that?"

Andrew said, "Oh. Nothing much."

The two men were at daggers drawn, the atmosphere instantly tense.
