Chapter 142
James's POV:
"Even if I go to the deepest depths of hell, I'll curse Sophia every single day down there, wishing her a terrible end."
After Amelia finished speaking, she threw her head back and laughed.
At that moment, I realized I had never really known the real Amelia.
"You know what I'm capable of. Do you really think what you have on me can threaten me?" I wasn't afraid of what Amelia had. She couldn't threaten me.
"Since you won't save me, I'm going to die right now."
I looked at her. "You won't die."
If Amelia weren't afraid of death, she wouldn't be asking me to save her.
Amelia jumped out of bed and ran outside.
I didn't know what she was trying to do. I just felt annoyed.
I thought she was just running out to blow off steam, but then a nurse came running to tell me Amelia had climbed to the roof and was going to jump.
I rushed to the roof.
Sophia's POV:
"Something's happened! Someone's going to jump!"
Someone was shouting outside the hospital room, waking me up.
I sat up and asked Liliana, "Liliana, who's going to jump?"
"I don't know either. Wait here, I'll go find out."
Liliana came back quickly. "Sophia, it's Amelia. Who knows what's gotten into her, but she's threatening to jump."
I threw off the covers. "Let's go see."
When I got there, James was standing not far from Amelia.
The police kept telling James to calm Amelia down, to help her think clearly, and not do anything rash.
Amelia was wearing a thin hospital gown, barefoot, swaying unsteadily on the low wall at the edge of the rooftop. Her hair was blown wild by the wind, her face streaked with tears. She looked miserable and pitiful.
A crowd had already gathered below. Emergency airbags were being set up, and several police officers and medical staff were on standby.
Amelia stood at the edge, looking warily at James and the other officers, crying out desperately, "Don't come any closer! If you push me, I'll jump!"
James stood a few meters away, his face dark, trying to calm her down. "Amelia, come down. Let's talk this through!"
"Talk? You're sending me to prison, what's there to talk about?" Amelia cried. "James, I saved your life! I loved you so much. How can you do this to me?"
"It must be Sophia. She's drugged you, stolen you away from me, and now she wants me dead."
She spotted me in the crowd, her eyes widening instantly, blazing with shocking hatred. She pointed her finger at me. "Sophia, you bitch! Are you satisfied now?"
"You stole James from me, and now you want to drive my baby and me to death. You won't be happy until we die right in front of you, will you?"
The crowd below stirred, pointing and staring at me.
"What's going on? The wife forcing the mistress to jump?"
"Are mistresses this bold these days? Actually, driving the wife to jump?"
Seeing public opinion seemed to favor her, Amelia performed even harder, crying her heart out. "Sophia, I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have fallen in love with James, but you and James are already divorced. Why won't you let him go?"
"Why do you keep targeting me, framing me? Now you won't even spare my child... How cruel can you be!"
James shouted sternly, "Amelia, what are you talking about? Get down!"
But I just laughed bitterly.
Even at death's door, she still wanted to throw dirt on me, to ruin my reputation.
I walked forward a few steps, stopping at a distance from both her and James, and raised my voice against the cold wind.
My voice wasn't loud, but it carried clearly, with a cold, penetrating force.
"Amelia, even now, you're still acting, still twisting the truth."
I looked at the growing crowd below, and at the police and medical staff trying to intervene.
"Today I'm going to make everything clear - who interfered in whose relationship, who's the homewrecker - so some people who don't know the truth won't curse me out."
"My name is Sophia Brown. This man, James Smith, and I were indeed married, but we're divorced now in the cooling-off period."
"And this Amelia Martinez, who wants to die to prove her point, is the wife of my ex-husband's late brother."
"Ms. Martinez interfered in our relationship while Mr. Smith and I were still married, and even had her child call my ex-husband 'daddy.'"
The crowd erupted.
What a mess!
Amelia's face changed. "You... you're lying!"
"Whether I'm lying or not, you know in your heart." I looked at her coldly.
"Besides interfering in our relationship, you also killed my child. Have you forgotten all that?"
As I spoke, my voice began to tremble uncontrollably. Just thinking about that lost child made my heart ache beyond control.
Tears slid down my cheeks. The cold wind blew, so cold, but not as cold as my heart.
"Who won't let go of whom? Who's trying to drive whom to death? Everyone should know the answer now."
"Amelia, people aren't blind. Don't think you can deceive them with your lies and make them your accomplices in hurting people."
The discussion below immediately changed direction.
"Being a mistress and then showing off in front of the wife?"
"This woman is too evil!"
"The wife's child was lost because of her?"
"No wonder she wants to jump - too ashamed to face people!"
Amelia panicked and screamed, "You're lying! I didn't! You lost the baby yourself!"
"I'm lying?" I wiped away my tears, looking sharply at Amelia. "Do you want me to show everyone the evidence of how you seduced your husband's brother, how you conspired with a doctor to lie about my pregnancy and kill my child?"
Amelia panicked. "I didn't! She's lying, don't believe her!"
"Not long ago, she tricked me into a frozen lake in the middle of nowhere, smashed the ice with rocks, and pushed me into the water, trying to drown me and kill us both." I pointed at Amelia, accusing her of her crimes. "I was lucky to be rescued and barely survived."
"She's pretending to be sick and threatening to jump now because she knows her sins are too heavy, and she wants to use this method to escape legal punishment."
"A woman like this - who interferes in other people's marriages, kills other people's children, and deliberately plans murder - doesn't deserve any sympathy."
The crowd below was outraged.
"Too evil! A woman like that should be executed."
"Arrest her quickly, don't let her really jump and get off easy."
"The wife is so pitiful - lost her child, almost got killed herself..."
"Don't just blame the woman, isn't the man at fault too?"
"That man looks so respectable, who knew he'd be such trash."
Amelia stood at the edge of the rooftop, being condemned by the onlookers. Her face was deathly pale, shaking like a leaf in the wind.
She never expected I would publicly reveal everything, without any consideration for James or the Smith family.
