Chapter 112
James's words exploded in my ears like a thunderclap.
I shot up from the sofa, my legs not fully recovered yet. I wobbled before steadying myself.
"What did you say?" I looked at him in disbelief. "James, this is my home. You didn't even discuss it with me, and you're just going to live here?"
He looked completely calm, "Married couples should live together. What's wrong with my staying?"
"Do you think we're a normal married couple?"
He asked me, "Don't you think we are?"
"Of course not!" I was so angry my chest felt tight. "Leave right now, or I'm calling the police!"
"The police?" He raised an eyebrow and walked toward me, his tall figure imposing. "Sophia, do you really think the police will get involved in a married couple's private matters?"
I stepped back, clenching my fists. "James, don't push it!"
He stopped, just half a step away from me, looking down at me. "You're injured. It's convenient for me to stay and take care of you."
"I don't need it!" I turned my face away. "I can take care of myself. Having you here just makes me uncomfortable."
I grabbed him. "Leave now."
James didn't move.
I looked at him. He raised an eyebrow and smiled, then pulled me hard. I lost control and fell into his arms.
"You!" I struggled hard. "Let go of me!"
"Stop moving, or I might not be able to resist doing what we did in the car again." He lowered his head, his lips against my ear, his voice very low.
My body stiffened, and I really didn't dare move.
James poked my face. "Want to take a shower?"
I stared at him warily. "What are you trying to do?"
"Don't you shower before bed?"
I pressed my lips together. "You're not allowed to sleep here."
James made a sound of acknowledgment, completely ignoring what I said, and said to himself, "Then I'll go shower first."
I watched him walk toward the bathroom, so angry I wanted to stomp my feet, but there was nothing I could do.
After all that commotion half the night, I was hungry, so I could only pick up my phone to order takeout.
James appeared out of nowhere, walked over to me, and said, "Don't order anything too greasy. Your body can't handle it."
I ignored him and ordered some plain porridge on my own. Then I hesitated, looked at his retreating figure, added one more item, and placed the order.
When the delivery arrived, I was still showering. James got the food.
When I came out after my shower, I saw him carrying in the takeout. My eyes inadvertently swept over the bag, and my expression instantly darkened.
He put the porridge on the table, then picked up a separate small box, turned to look at me, his eyes ice-cold. "Sophia, what is this?"
My expression was calm. "Are you blind? Can't you see for yourself?"
He gripped the box of emergency contraceptive pills, his knuckles white, his voice like ice. "You really don't want to have my child?"
"So what if I don't?" I raised my head to meet his gaze. "James, neither you nor I deserves to be parents."
He suddenly slammed the box on the table with a loud bang that made me jump.
"Don't deserve?" He closed in on me, anger surging in his eyes. "Why don't I deserve it?"
"Have you forgotten about the child that died because of Amelia and Isabella?"
At the mention of that child who never came into this world, my heart felt like it was being squeezed hard, the pain making it hard to breathe.
Tears instantly welled up. I bit my lip, forcing myself not to let them fall.
My voice was choked. "If it weren't for Amelia and Isabella, nothing would have happened to that child. Maybe by now I would have given birth to him and be living happily abroad with him."
He acted like he'd heard the biggest joke, and laughed coldly. "Sophia, when it comes down to it, you wanted to leave me."
"If I didn't leave, should I have stayed here to watch you and Amelia being all lovey-dovey?"
James: "I never crossed the line with her."
I sneered. "The things you say can only fool yourself."
He laughed self-deprecatingly, his tone full of disappointment. "Sophia, do you hate me that much?"
"I don't hate you. I just don't want to repeat the same mistakes!" I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.
To say I didn't hate him would be a lie, but right now, I had no way to fight against James, and I couldn't get past him to kill Amelia.
I could only endure and wait for the right moment.
He stared at me for a long time, his eyes complex, seeming to show not just anger but also a hint of hurt.
"Fine, very good." He nodded, threw down the box of pills hard, and headed for the door.
He opened the door and stopped. "Sophia, when it comes to being heartless, no one can compare to you."
He slammed the door shut so hard the walls seemed to shake.
With a numb expression, I picked up the box of emergency contraceptive pills he'd thrown on the floor, opened the package, took out a pill, and swallowed it with the cold water on the table.
The pill scraped down my throat with a trace of bitterness, just like my mood at that moment.
After taking the pill, I felt weak all over, probably too tired from being up all night.
I walked to the bedroom, collapsed on the bed, closed my eyes, and quickly fell asleep.
I don't know how long I slept. I felt the wound on my neck throbbing with pain, and my lower abdomen started feeling uncomfortable, too.
Then I was jolted awake by severe abdominal pain.
Cold sweat instantly soaked through my pajamas. I curled up on the bed, the pain so intense I could barely breathe.
I wanted to call for help, but found I didn't even have the strength to pick up my phone.
My vision kept going black, and finally, I completely lost consciousness.
I tried to struggle up to drink some water, but found my hands and feet wouldn't obey me. My vision went black, and I completely lost consciousness.
When I regained consciousness, I heard someone calling my name.
The voice was familiar, but I couldn't open my eyes.
"Sophia! Sophia, wake up! Don't scare me!"
It was Liliana's voice, mixed with sobs.
There was another voice, which seemed like Yasmin: "Call an ambulance! No wait, there's no time, take her straight to the hospital..."
My body was lifted, then seemed to be put in a car.
What happened after that, I had no idea.
When I opened my eyes again, I saw Yasmin's red, tear-stained eyes, and Liliana standing with her hands on her hips, looking furious.
"Liliana, Sophia's awake!" Yasmin noticed I was awake and tugged at Liliana's sleeve.
Liliana came over. "Sophia, how do you feel?"
I moved my lips. "Water."
They scrambled to find me water.
Yasmin carefully helped me up and let me lean against her. "Liliana, be careful when you give her water."
After drinking the water, my dry throat felt much better. "What happened to me?"
"You're asking what happened?" Liliana was both angry and anxious. "Yasmin and I wanted to hang out with you. You didn't answer your phone or reply to messages. We were worried something happened to you, so we went to your place today."
"You didn't answer when we knocked. We could hear your phone ringing inside when we called. We were afraid something happened to you, so we called a locksmith."
"As soon as the door opened, we saw you passed out on the bed, your face completely pale!" Liliana said, tears falling again. "You scared me to death, you know?"
I forced a smile. "I'm sorry for worrying you."
