Chapter 6 The Price of Failure
The conference room felt smaller than before. Colder.
Nora stood between Noah and Sam, her body still trembling from adrenaline. Beverley stood apart from them, her arms crossed, her expression carefully neutral. They had been summoned immediately upon their return. No time to clean up, no time to prepare. Just straight from the car to this room.
To face him.
The Mafia King sat at the head of the table, perfectly still in his black suit and ornate mask. The silver filigree caught the light with every slight movement of his head. His gloved hands were folded on the table in front of him, and though Nora couldn’t see his full face, she could feel his eyes on her.
The silence stretched on, thick and suffocating. No one dared speak first. No one dared breathe too loudly.
Finally, the Mafia King leaned back in his chair. The leather creaked.
“Report.”
His voice was quiet. Too quiet. That was somehow worse than if he had been shouting.
Noah stepped forward slightly, his jaw tight. “Sir, the operation was compromised. The target became suspicious before we could complete the data extraction. We were forced to abort.”
“Abort.” The Mafia King repeated the word slowly, tasting it. “You were forced to abort.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And the files? Did you acquire what I needed?”
Noah’s silence was answer enough.
The Mafia King’s fingers drummed once on the table. “I see. So not only did the operation fail, but you acquired nothing. No data. No passwords. No access to Holloway’s portfolio.”
“The download was incomplete, sir. We got approximately forty percent before—”
“Forty percent is worthless without the encryption keys.” The Mafia King’s voice remained eerily calm. “Which means you got nothing. Nothing except exposure.”
Noah swallowed hard. “Yes, sir.”
“And tell me, Noah. How exactly did the target become suspicious?”
Nora’s heart hammered in her chest. She could feel everyone’s eyes on her now, even though no one was looking directly at her.
Noah’s jaw clenched. “He asked questions about her cover story. When she couldn’t provide satisfactory answers quickly enough, he became aggressive. She had to extract herself physically.”
“I see.” The Mafia King stood slowly, his chair scraping against the floor. He walked around the table with measured steps, his hands clasped behind his back. “And the device? The USB drive that cost me five thousand dollars and contains technology that could be traced back to this organization?”
Noah’s face went pale. “Still in his laptop, sir.”
The Mafia King stopped walking. For a moment, the only sound was the ticking of a clock somewhere in the room.
“Still in his laptop,” he repeated softly. “So not only did you fail to acquire the data, but you also left physical evidence that someone hacked his computer. Evidence that he will undoubtedly turn over to his security team, possibly law enforcement. Evidence that could be traced.”
“It’s not my fault!”
The words burst out of Nora before she could stop them. Everyone in the room went rigid.
The Mafia King turned slowly to face her.
“Excuse me?”
Nora’s hands were shaking, but she couldn’t stop now. The adrenaline, the fear, the anger—it all came pouring out. “It’s not my fault the man was smart enough to see through it. He asked questions I couldn’t answer because the cover story had holes in it!”
“Nora,” Noah said quietly, a warning.
But she couldn’t stop. “Neon and Associates? That was the company name you gave me? A company that doesn’t even exist? At least if you’d given me a real company name, I could have—”
“Silence.”
The single word cut through the room like a whip crack.
Nora’s mouth snapped shut.
The Mafia King took a step toward her. Then another. He moved with the deliberate slowness of a predator approaching wounded prey.
“You dare,” he said softly, “to speak to me that way? To make excuses for your incompetence? To blame others for your failure?”
Nora’s face tightened, her jaw clenching so hard it hurt. Every instinct screamed at her to defend herself, to argue back, to fight. But she couldn’t. No one spoke to the Mafia King like that. No one challenged him.
Not if they wanted to survive.
“You were given explicit instructions,” the Mafia King continued, circling her slowly like a shark. “You were told to be charming. To be convincing. To adapt to the situation. Instead, you panicked. You froze. You ran.”
“He grabbed me—”
“I said silence!” His voice rose for the first time, sharp and vicious.
Nora flinched but bit her tongue.
“You left a five-thousand-dollar piece of equipment in the target’s possession. You compromised this operation. And now you stand here making excuses like a child.” He stopped directly in front of her, so close she could see her own reflection in his mask. “You are a disappointment, Miss Carter. A liability. And liabilities must be dealt with accordingly.”
Nora’s breathing was shallow, rapid. Her hands were clenched into fists at her sides.
“You were warned about the consequences of failure,” the Mafia King said. “Three days in the Dark Room. That was the agreement.”
“Sir—” Noah started.
“However,” the Mafia King continued, “given the severity of this failure, I’ve decided on a different approach. Something more… instructive.”
He turned away from Nora and walked back toward the head of the table.
“You will be locked in an empty room for twelve hours. No food. No water. No light except what I allow.” He paused, his back still to them. “But first, to ensure the lesson truly sinks in, you will be taught what happens to those who fail me.”
He snapped his fingers.
The door burst open, and three guards entered. Large men, built like walls, with faces that showed no emotion.
“Teach her,” the Mafia King said simply.
Nora’s blood turned to ice. “Wait—”
The first guard grabbed her arm, yanking her away from Noah and Sam. She tried to pull free, but his grip was iron.
“No, please—”
The first punch caught her in the stomach, driving the air from her lungs. She doubled over, gasping, and the second blow came from behind, striking her kidney. Pain exploded through her body.
“Stop!” Noah’s voice, desperate.
But no one stopped.
The beating was systematic. Brutal. They knew exactly where to hit to cause maximum pain without causing permanent damage. Fists to her ribs, her back, her sides. A kick to her legs that dropped her to her knees. Another punch to her shoulder that sent her sprawling on the floor.
Noah stood frozen, his hands clenched into fists at his sides, every muscle in his body tense. He wanted to move, wanted to throw himself between Nora and the guards, wanted to beat them unconscious for touching her. But he couldn’t. No one could intervene when the Mafia King gave an order. To do so was death.
So he stood there, watching, hating himself for his helplessness.
Nora tried to curl into a ball, tried to protect herself, but there was nowhere to hide. The guards kicked her when she was down, pulled her up by her hair only to strike her again. She tasted blood. Felt something crack in her ribs. Her vision blurred.
“Please,” she sobbed, the word barely audible. “Please stop.”
But they didn’t stop. Not until the Mafia King raised his hand.
“Enough.”
The guards stepped back immediately, breathing heavily from exertion. Nora lay on the floor, barely conscious, blood trickling from her nose and split lip. Every breath was agony. Her whole body felt like it was on fire.
The Mafia King walked over and crouched down beside her, so close she could smell his expensive cologne.
“This,” he said softly, almost gently, “is just a taste, Miss Carter. A tip of the iceberg compared to what you will experience if you fail me again. Do you understand?”
Nora could barely nod. Tears and blood mixed on her face.
“Good.” He stood and gestured to the guards. “Take her to the holding room. Twelve hours. No exceptions.”
The guards bent down and grabbed Nora under her arms, hauling her to her feet. Her legs wouldn’t support her weight. They dragged her toward the door, her feet scraping uselessly against the floor.
As they passed Noah, Nora’s eyes met his for just a moment. She saw the anguish there, the rage, the guilt. She wanted to tell him it wasn’t his fault. That he couldn’t have stopped this. But she couldn’t form the words.
Then they pulled her through the doorway, and the last thing she saw before the darkness swallowed her was the Mafia King standing at the head of the table, his masked face turned toward the window, his hands clasped behind his back.
Completely unmoved by her suffering.
The door slammed shut.
And Nora realized with terrible clarity that this was only the beginning.
