Chapter 111: The Gilded Vault

Chapter 111: The Gilded Vault

The sun was setting, casting long, bloody shadows across the white stone of the estate. But as they stepped onto the pier, the atmosphere was different. The usual guards were gone, replaced by men in black tactical gear—men Isla didn't recognize. They stood like statues every ten feet, their eyes fixed forward, their hands on their weapons.

"Who are they?" Isla whispered, her voice trembling.

"Your new shadows," Lorenzo said, not looking at her. "From this moment on, you do not take a breath that isn't recorded. You do not move from one room to another without an escort. You wanted to see the edges of the cage, Isla. Now, I am making them visible."

He led her through the grand entrance. The staff stood in a line in the foyer, their heads bowed. None of them dared to look at her bruised face or her oversized, salt-stained clothes. They looked ashamed, as if they were mourners at a funeral.

Lorenzo didn't stop until they reached the master suite. He pushed the heavy oak doors open and led her inside.

Waiting on the bed was a collection of new clothes—silk, lace, and cashmere in shades of cream and white. But next to the clothes was something that made Isla’s blood run cold. A new collar. It wasn't a delicate diamond on a wire; it was a solid band of polished platinum, thick and unyielding.

"Put it on," Lorenzo commanded.

"No," Isla said, backing away until she hit the glass wall overlooking the ocean. "I won't. You can't make me wear that like an animal."

Lorenzo moved so fast she didn't have time to blink. He was in her space, his hand slamming against the glass behind her head. "You chose the animal's path when you ran into the jungle. You chose it when you lied to me in the heat of the night. You will wear it so that every time you look in the mirror, you remember who owns the air in your lungs."

He picked up the band. It clicked open with a clinical, metallic sound. He stepped toward her, and for the first time, Isla saw a flicker of something broken in his eyes—a deep, jagged insecurity that he was covering with cruelty.

"If you don't put it on," he whispered, "I will lock this door and I will never open it again. Not for the sun, not for your books, not for your 'mercy.' You will exist only in this room, with me, until the world forgets your name."

Isla looked at the platinum band, then at the man she had saved—the man she had begun to love, even as he destroyed her. She realized then that Lorenzo wasn't just punishing her. He was terrified of her. He was terrified that if he didn't hold her this tightly, he would simply cease to exist.

With trembling hands, she took the band from him. The metal was cold against her skin as she snapped it around her throat. It fit perfectly. It felt heavy. It felt permanent.

Lorenzo’s expression shifted. The rage vanished, replaced by a look of intense, almost painful relief. He reached out and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck, right above the new metal.

"Good," he murmured, his voice muffled against her skin. "Now you are safe. Now you are mine."

He pulled back, his thumb grazing her lower lip. "I have to handle the men who helped you. The merchant captain and his crew... they are being dealt with."

"Don't kill them, Lorenzo," she pleaded, her eyes filling with tears. "They didn't know."

"They touched what belongs to me," he said, his voice returning to that icy, untouchable Don persona. "That is a debt that can only be paid in one currency."

He turned to leave, but as he reached the door, he paused. "Oh, and Isla? Yours friends, Jennie and that Raymond…. Will be the next target when you try to run away again”
