Chapter 57: A Test He Has to Pass
Lily had spent the past three months telling herself that she was done with Adrian Blackwood.
That he had left, and that was the end of their story.
But now?
Now, he was back.
And he wanted Ava.
But did she let him?
Could she risk letting him in again?
She didn’t know.
And that uncertainty was the most dangerous thing of all.
A Conversation That Can’t Be Avoided
The next morning, Lily sat at the kitchen table, watching Ava eat her cereal.
Her tiny feet swung under the chair, her curls bouncing as she hummed to herself.
So innocent.
So unaware of the storm brewing around her.
Lily’s heart ached.
Because this wasn’t just her decision to make.
This was about Ava, too.
She had to do what was best for her daughter.
Even if that meant facing Adrian again.
Even if that meant giving him a chance.
Lily exhaled slowly.
Then—she picked up her phone.
And dialed his number.
His Reaction Says Everything
The call barely rang before he picked up.
“Lily.”
His voice was low. Tense.
Like he had been waiting.
Like he hadn’t been sure she would call at all.
She swallowed hard.
“I’ve thought about what you said,” she murmured.
Silence.
Then—“And?”
Lily’s grip tightened around the phone.
“I’m not going to stop you from seeing Ava.”
A sharp inhale.
But before he could respond, she continued—her voice firm.
“But it has to be on my terms.”
Adrian was quiet for a moment.
Then—his voice dropped.
“Okay.”
Lily exhaled.
Because that was step one.
Now, she had to figure out if he was willing to fight for the rest.
Laying Down the Rules
They met at the park the next afternoon.
Neutral ground.
Lily sat on a bench, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, watching as Adrian arrived.
He looked the same.
Sharp suit. Controlled presence.
But his eyes?
They were different.
Softer.
Like he was trying to prove something.
Lily didn’t let herself react.
She just lifted her chin.
“I have conditions.”
Adrian’s lips pressed together, but he nodded.
“Go on.”
Lily inhaled.
“One—this happens slowly. You don’t get to waltz in and expect her to see you as her father overnight.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
But he didn’t argue.
“Two—you don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
His brows furrowed. “Lily—”
She cut him off.
“I mean it, Adrian. If you walk away again, you don’t come back.”
His eyes darkened.
Like the thought of leaving again was out of the question.
Like he wasn’t that man anymore.
But Lily had heard promises before.
She wasn’t interested in words.
She wanted actions.
She held his gaze.
“Three—if Ava ever tells me she doesn’t want to see you, I won’t force her. You’ll respect that.”
Adrian exhaled slowly.
Then—he nodded.
“I can agree to that.”
Lily’s pulse skipped.
Because he wasn’t fighting her.
Wasn’t trying to control the situation.
And that?
That scared her more than anything.
Because if he had really changed—what then?
Ava’s First Meeting with Adrian
A few minutes later, Ava came bounding over the hill, her tiny arms swinging as she raced toward Lily.
“Mommy, look! I found a ladybug!”
Lily smiled, her heart twisting as she tucked a curl behind Ava’s ear.
“That’s wonderful, sweetheart.”
Then—her voice softened.
“There’s someone here who wants to see you.”
Ava turned.
And for the first time in three months—
She saw Adrian.
Her eyes widened.
Her lips parted in surprise.
Then—
“Mr. Adrian!”
Lily’s breath hitched.
Because Ava ran straight to him.
And Adrian?
He dropped to his knees, arms open.
Like he had been waiting for this moment forever.
Ava threw herself at him, giggling as he lifted her effortlessly.
“You’re back!” she squealed.
Adrian’s voice broke.
“I am.”
Lily watched, her throat tight.
Because no matter how much she wanted to stay angry, no matter how much she wanted to hate him for leaving—
She couldn’t ignore the look on his face.
Like this was the first time in his life he had ever truly belonged somewhere.
And that?
That terrified her more than anything.
The Unspoken Question
They spent the next hour at the park.
Adrian pushed Ava on the swings.
Laughed as she made him chase her around the playground.
Listened patiently as she told him about all the things he had missed.
Lily sat on the bench, watching.
Studying.
Trying to convince herself that this was just temporary.
That Adrian would mess up eventually.
That he wasn’t capable of being what Ava needed.
But deep down—she wasn’t sure anymore.
And that?
That was the most dangerous thing of all.
The Moment She Wasn’t Ready For
As the sun began to set, Ava finally yawned, rubbing her eyes as she climbed onto the bench beside Lily.
Adrian sat across from them, his expression careful.
Controlled.
But then—
Ava’s tiny voice shattered the quiet.
“Are you staying, Mr. Adrian?”
Lily’s breath hitched.
Adrian stilled.
Then—his gaze flickered to Lily.
Like he knew that this wasn’t just about Ava anymore.
Like he knew that whatever happened next—
It was up to her.
Her hands clenched into fists.
Because she didn’t know the answer.
Didn’t know if she could risk this again.
But then—Ava sighed.
“Okay. Well, if you’re staying, you should tuck me in tonight.”
Adrian exhaled sharply.
Lily’s stomach twisted.
Because Ava had already decided.
Now, it was her turn.
And she had no idea what to do next.
