Chapter 21 — Carter
I get up and go to the dining room to eat some breakfast. Everyone is there except Emmy, Travis, and Calder. Weird. I know they were up late, but it isn’t like them to miss breakfast. Especially Emmy, I know she loves breakfast food. I shake off the uneasy feeling I had and eat some food. The table is full of conversation, but I still can’t shake the uneasy feeling I have. I look at Vivian and she seems concerned too. Something feels off. We all know something is wrong when Luna comes barking into the dining room.
My heart drops. Emmy is in trouble. We all get up from the table to follow Luna into the main living room. Emmy, Travis, and Calder are passed out on the sectional. I don’t know what danger they could be in, or if they are just asleep on the couch. Before I can get annoyed at Luna for giving me a heart attack Avery and Bex gasp as if they know something.
“No. No. No. This isn’t happening.” Avery cries out as Bex wraps his arms around her.
“What’s wrong?” I ask knowing I am not going to like the answer.
I should know most things are never as they seem in the magic world, especially with the Enchantress running around.
“It’s the Sleeping Death Curse,” Bex informs me. “It’s a curse that traps a person's spirit in a state of limbo till they either complete a task that the person who cast the spell sets up for them or if they fail. Then they are stuck in limbo or wherever the person who casts the spell puts them. With Avery she had to figure out that she was really alive and, in a coma, and not dead. See the red bands on their wrists?” I nod my head yes Bex continues. “Those red bands mean someone put the Sleeping Death Curse on them. They are stuck somewhere at least it’s safe to assume they are stuck somewhere since I don’t see their spirits roaming around. Their spirits must be somewhere else.”
“This is bad.” Vivian utters mostly to herself.
“I bet it’s the Enchantress who cast the curse.” Jason comments.
“What can we do?” Alice asks.
“Without their spirits here nothing. We are helpless to help them.” Vivian answers.
“What happens if they don’t wake up?” Ryan questions.
“We are all royally screwed.” Alice replied. “Emmy is the one who can stop the Enchantress because she is the chosen child. Calder and Travis are the only ones with enough knowledge to even know how to bring the bitch down. Without them we are screwed beyond belief.”
“Yeah, but isn’t the team supposed to stop the Enchantress, not just Emmy?” Avery asks.
“No, we are just her helpers, in the end she has to be the one to kill the Enchantress.” Bex answers back.
“This is bad. Very bad,” Jason states. “We don’t even know where they are. We can’t even help them.”
“Really, what gave that away?” Alice says sarcastically as she throws her hands on her hips.
“We have to trust that Emmy, Calder and Travis can handle themselves. That they can win.” Leave it to Vivian to give a diplomatic answer.
However, she is right. The only thing we can do is hope that they can win. I am so furious. Bex and Ryan take me out on our bikes to calm me down, but it doesn’t help. I can’t lose Emmy. I just can't. I can’t do this without her. Emmy has to come back to me. She has to win because if she doesn’t, I’m going to go off the deep end. At least when she ran away, I always knew she would come back at some point, which was why I could hold on, but this time if she doesn’t come back it’s forever.
