CHAPTER 29
Alice “I think Emmy just lost it,” Ryan states as we all watched Emmy storm off into the woods.
“You think? What gave it away?” I say sarcastically as I roll my eyes at Ryan. My best friend has lost her cool. “Seriously, any more secrets the group needs to know about?”
I watch as everyone shakes their head no. This is a mess if I ever saw one. My best friend has lost it, and I can't blame her. One thing after another has shattered her world. I knew she was barely holding on, but when Travis, who is her real dad, showed up that was all it took to send her over the edge.
Everyone has started arguing and talking over the other. I look at Carter who has a worried look on his face. I’m worried too. I’ve never seen Emmy lose it like that before. In all the years I’ve known her she has never freaked out as bad as she did just now. She snapped right before our eyes.
Carter walks up to me, and whispers in my ear.
“We should go after her. She can’t be safe on her own.”
“I know we will. Just give her a few minutes to collect herself and then we can leave these idiots to argue.”
Just as the arguing is getting louder Darren, Ivy, and Stella walk in on the fireworks that are exploding between the adults. I fill them in on what is going on which just sparks them to join the argument with the adults. The sun is setting, and I know Emmy shouldn’t be out on her own. I’m about to grab Carter and the others to go after Emmy when Luna runs up to us. She is barking and going crazy. Everyone stops to look at Luna who hasn't stopped barking like a mad dog. It has only been about ten or fifteen minutes since Emmy stormed off, but Luna’s barking means trouble.
“We have got to go now!” Travis yells. “Emmy is in trouble.” I guess he can read animals minds too. Everyone follows Luna into the woods. Carter looks like he is freaking out, and Travis looks worried. Travis looking worried makes me worry even more. He clearly knows more about what is going on than anyone, if he is worried then we all have need for concern.
