CHAPTER 15

Kenzie My back is against the headboard of our bed. Jason is sitting next to me reading his own book. His salt and pepper hair are wet and messy from taking a shower. I try to focus on my book, but I can’t. I’m just relieved that Emmy joined the coven.

I’m proud of her, and I’m glad she wasn't taking after her mother. I never knew Gemma’s mom because she died when Gemma was young, but I knew her grandmother Val. Val was an old fashioned witch that took the rules and being a part of the coven seriously. Val was even the leader of our coven before she passed away. I know Gemma’s rebellion had broken her heart. Val would be happy that Emmy is on the right path.

The trouble with powerful bloodlines is that they run the risk of corruption. Even my family has had a few witches and warlocks go off the deep end. Brie and Bexton have two powerful bloodlines coursing through their veins, but so far, they are doing well and seem to be on the right path. Plus, I don’t think either of my kids would go off the deep end, they seem to really love being a part of the magical world. They have good heads on their shoulders. I like to think Jason and I raised them right.

I always wonder if something happened to Gemma to make her rebel like she did. I always felt like there was something she wasn’t telling me, some dark secret that she kept to herself. I don't know what it could be. I had tried to figure it out, tried to guess it, but I never could. Vivian was Val’s protégé since Gemma didn’t want to be a part of the magical world or become the next leader of the coven, so Vivian took over.

Vivian is a very elegant woman, and all about the rules. I know she looked up to Val. Vivian is worried about Emmy being like her mom, but thankfully she has proven her loyalty. Gemma had never joined the Coven so the fact that Emmy did means that Emmy is staying on the right path. I know Vivian is still a bit skeptical because of how things went down with Gemma. I couldn’t blame her. I know Vivian would be keeping her eye on Emmy, and so would the rest of the coven for that matter. Everyone would be waiting to see what Emmy did with her life. Would she be like her great grandmother Val or would she be like her mother Gemma? It was a question that everyone wanted answered, including me.

I wouldn’t be seeing Emmy till the middle of next week. Brielle and Bexton were home for the weekend before they went back down south with their grandma. Jason’s mom wasn’t doing so well. Jason’s dad had died in a small battle trying to bring in a rogue witch. his dad was a reaper, a witch or warlock responsible for bringing in troublemaking witches and warlocks. Jason’s mom was human and in her elderly age her immune system was failing her. Beth had fallen in love with Henry, and together they had Jason. Beth has known about the magical world for a long time now.

Brie and Bex decided to spend some time with Beth since we weren’t sure how much longer she really has left. I know Beth means a lot to the kids, and to Jason as well. I like her, but of course like any mother-in-law and daughter-in-law we have our differences.

I will still miss her when she is gone, but I can't think about that now. I wanted to enjoy my kids while they were home, and make sure Emmy continued her training. So far so good, I tell myself as I give up on reading my book and decide to go to bed.
