The Curse Explained

The Curse Explained
Elara's POV

Twenty-eight seconds left, and I could feel my power slipping away like water through my fingers.
The evil inside me was clawing at my mind, screaming at me to hurt Alaric and Kaiden. My hands started glowing with a sick purple light instead of my normal silver, and I knew the witches' spell was almost complete.
"Elara, fight it!" Alaric yelled, but his voice sounded far away.
I tried to step back from them, but my feet wouldn't move. The spell was taking control of my body, turning me into the tool Sabrina wanted.
"Twenty seconds," the old witch said happily. "I can hardly wait to see what happens next."
But then something unexpected happened. One of the younger witches in the circle suddenly stumbled and fell. She tried to get back up, but fell again, coughing up blood.
"What's wrong with her?" Sabrina demanded.
The young witch looked up with scared eyes. "The rite... it's taking too much energy. I can't... I can't hold on."
"Don't be weak!" the old witch snapped. "We're so close!"
But it was too late. The young witch's part of the circle broke, and the whole rite started falling apart. The ball of stolen life force above them flickered and shrunk.
"No!" Sabrina screamed. "Fix it! Fix it now!"
In all the confusion, I felt the spell on me lessen just a little bit. It was like someone had released a rope that was choking me. I could think clearly for a few seconds.
That's when Kaiden did something I never expected. He tackled the young witch who had fallen, pinning her to the ground before the other witches could help her.
"Now!" he yelled to us. "While they're distracted!"
Alaric didn't waste any time. He grabbed me and pulled me behind a big tree just as purple lightning started flying everywhere. The witches were so angry about their broken rite that they were attacking each other.
"We need to get information from that witch Kaiden caught," Alaric said. "She might know how to break the spell on you."
I nodded, still fighting against the darkness in my head. We crept around the edge of the area until we reached Kaiden. He was holding the young witch down, but she wasn't fighting very hard. She looked sick and scared.
"Please," she whispered. "Don't hurt me. I never wanted to be part of this."
"Then help us," I said, kneeling down beside her. "Tell us how to stop the spell."
The witch looked at me with wide eyes. "You... you're her daughter, aren't you?"
"Whose daughter?"
"Luna Seraphina. You look just like her."
I felt like someone had hit me in the stomach. "Who is Luna Seraphina?"
"Your mother," the witch said sadly. "The most powerful Luna Priestess who ever lived."
Alaric and Kaiden both stared at me in shock. I couldn't speak at all.
"My mother was an omega," I finally managed to say. "She died when I was born."
The witch shook her head. "That's the lie they told you. Your real mother was Luna Seraphina, the strongest monster in a hundred years. She could heal any sickness, stop any dark magic, and control the power of the moon itself."
"That's impossible."
"The coven killed her when you were just a baby," the witch continued. "They were afraid of her power, and they knew you would grow up to be even stronger than she was."
I felt tears starting to run down my face. All my life, I'd been told I was nothing special. Just a weak omega whose mother died giving birth to her. But now this witch was telling me my mother had been a hero.
"Why didn't anyone tell me the truth?"
"Because the coven put a curse on you to hide your true nature," the witch stated. "They made everyone forget who you really were, including yourself. Then they put you with the Silver Creek Pack, knowing they would treat you badly and keep you weak."
"So everything... my whole life was a lie?"
"Not everything. Your goodness, your strength, your good heart - those are all real. But the curse made you think you were powerless when you're actually the most powerful werewolf living."
Kaiden was looking at me like he'd never seen me before. "Elara... I had no idea."
"None of us did," Alaric said quietly. "The curse was that strong."
"But it's weakening now," the witch said. "Something is breaking the spell."
I thought about the silver crescent necklace that Alaric had given me. I'd been wearing it ever since I came to his land, and that's when my powers had started showing up.
"The silver crescent stone," I whispered, touching the chain. "It's been helping me, hasn't it?"
The witch's eyes went wide. "You have the Luna Stone? But that's impossible! The coven destroyed it years ago!"
"What's the Luna Stone?" Alaric asked.
"It was your mother's most precious treasure," the witch stated. "A piece of the moon itself, given to her by the Moon Goddess. It's the only thing strong enough to break the curse completely."
I pulled the chain out from under my shirt. The silver stone was shining softly, and I could feel warmth coming from it.
"This is it, isn't it?"
"Yes," the witch breathed. "But be careful. If you use its full power to break the curse, it will also break the spell that's been hiding you from the group. They'll be able to find you anywhere."
"They can already find me," I pointed out. "They're right over there."
"Not just these witches. ALL of them. Every dark witch in the world will know where you are and what you are. They'll never stop hunting you."
I looked at Alaric and Kaiden. Both of them were watching me with worried faces.
"It's your choice," Alaric said gently. "But whatever you decide, we'll stand with you."
I held the Luna Stone in my hand, feeling its power calling to me. I could break the curse and become who I was always meant to be. But I'd also be putting everyone I cared about in danger.
"There's something else," the witch said quietly. "Something you need to know before you decide."
"What?"
"The curse isn't just hiding your power. It's also the only thing keeping you alive."
My blood turned to ice. "What do you mean?"
"Your mother's power was so strong that it burned her up from the inside. That's really how she died - her own magic consumed her. The curse has been protecting you from the same fate."
I stared at the glowing stone in my hand. "So if I break the curse..."
"You'll have maybe a few hours of full power before it kills you," the witch finished. "Just like it killed your mother."
The clearing went completely silent except for the sound of the other witches still fighting in the distance.
I had to choose: stay cursed and weak but alive, or break free and risk dying just like my mother had.
But then I heard Sabrina's voice cutting through the night air.
"Find them! The girl has the Luna Stone! We can't let her escape with it!"
Footsteps were coming toward us through the trees. In a few seconds, we'd be surrounded.
I looked at the stone one more time, then at the faces of the two men who had believed in me when no one else would.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
And then I crushed the Luna Stone in my fist.
