Chapter 61: I'm not actually engaged..
Amara's POV
“We were about to have a conversation before you cut in, Andrew, so if you don't mind?” Lucas said a little too softly making it all the more scary.
“Oh, no. It's fine. I…I'll talk to you later.” I forced a smile, and with the way Lucas looked at me, I'm sure he got the hint that I wanted to talk to him in private.
“Okay.” He nodded once and took a step back. “Later it is.”
I nodded, turned and walked away leaving the presence of those two men.
I couldn't talk to Lucas right now. At least not in front of his cousin.
I went straight back to work, waiting for the slightest window to go talk to him.
“Hey girl.”
However Lila took to sneak onto this floor two hours later was still a mystery to me but I was glad she took the risk, because now, here she was standing in front of me looking like she had gathered all the gossip in the world.
“Girl, I ain't gon lie I thought you were chilling up here, but you've got it low-key bad.” She whispered as she grabbed a seat beside me.
I laughed. “How? I think my office is pretty cute. Don't you think so? I mean, I'm overlooking the Manhattan skyline.”
“It is cute, but there's no one around besides Lucas, here is freezing like it's a fucking cold room and your cubicle glass isn't even tinted from the outside. Don't get me wrong, staying here alone with Lucas isn't all that bad but it would have been nicer if you two had something genuinely going on, don't you think?”
I heaved a sigh and looked up at her. “You're right. But like I said before, I don't think it's all that bad. At least my cubicle is soundproof, which I genuinely didn't expect up here.”
“Oh it is?” Lila gasped in absolute shock. “And I've been whispering all along thinking it wasn't.”
We both burst into laughter as she realized how stupid she had been.
“Why do you even think my cubicle should be tinted? I mean, I know y'all's is tinted but I don't really see any serious reason for it.”
“Because, girl.” She said that like it was a plausible reason she had just given.
“Because, girl.” I mocked her. “Because what?”
“Because there are things you might want to do that you can't do in an open glass.” She said like I'm supposed to already know what she meant.
“Things like what? Because I genuinely don't know what you're talking about.”
“Girl, I have toys in my office. Sometimes, I give myself a good cumshot, and as a single girl, it's quite helpful to have your sex life still ... .you know, living.”
“It's the way you're seriously trying to lecture me on this that amazes me. First of all, I don't think I'm interested in touching myself in my office. Second, what makes you think there isn't a camera in your office? Like genuinely answer me.”
She just froze and her eyes flew wide open as she stared at me.
“Shit. I didn't think of that.”
“Well, it must be quite a show for Andrew if he decides to go through the footage.” I laughed and stuck my tongue out at her, seriously enjoying seeing her flustered.
“Wait, is he staying up here?” She asked excitedly as she bit her finger.
“Yes. And please stop staring at me like you want to fucking rape me.”
“I'm not.” She laughed.
“Speak of the devil and he shall appear.” I whispered as I watched Andrew swagger out of the office and past my cubicle.
“Fuck. I need to go talk to Lucas now that he's alone.”
“Oh yeah. Sure. Go right away.”
Lila knew what I was talking about because I had texted her earlier and I was rushing to go see Lucas because it would soon be closing time and I wanted to make sure I saw him today.
“Hey.” I said softly as I walked into the office.
“Hi.” He looked up from his computer with a smile and got up to …. probably come hug me? I don't know.
“I just want to ask you a question. I didn't come here for anything serious. And please I'd really like for this not to turn into an argument, so if you don't mind, answer me plainly and honestly. Is that okay?”
He took a step back and placed his hands in his pocket before nodding. “Yeah. Sure.”
I don't know if it was because of how calm I was and how softly I was speaking, but he was taking this very seriously and I liked it.
“I want to know. Was it all just my own test? The sex, the nights I spent awake thinking about you, ….. everything.” If not for the teardrop that fell on my hand, I wouldn't have realized I was crying. “Was it all just my test to see if I could keep your secret?”
Lucas shook his head in confusion as he walked towards me. “What?!”
“Just answer me, Lucas. Please.”
“No. No, I'll answer you. Just…..how do you know about the test?”
“You said it in the meeting……didn't you?”
“No. I didn't.” He shook his head with a smug little smile.
“Okay, fine. Maybe Michaela told us about it a few days ago, and please don't fire her. Just answer me.”
“Us?”
“Lila and I. Now please answer my question.” I tapped my feet on the ground in urgency.
“No. No it was not a test, at all. I didn't give you any test, Amara, because I don't have to. I trust you.”
I froze as he walked up and held my arms, pulling me into a light hug.
“Don't.” I slowly pushed him off me even if I just wanted to pull him closer.
He looked at me with a hurt expression, and I knew I had to explain.
“You're engaged, Lucas. I can't be running around with someone that is engaged, almost getting married.”
“I'm not actually engaged, Amara. I'm surprised Ezra hadn't told you that yet.”
My head snapped to meet his.
“What?!”
