Chapter 217
Chapter 217
~Marlowe~
Morning sunlight spilled across Raven’s in slow golden streaks, catching against chrome and wet pavement leftover from the storm two nights ago. The compound sounded different today. Lighter somehow. Engines still rumbled in the distance, brothers still moved between buildings with coffee cups and cigarettes, but the tension sitting over everything since my kidnapping had finally loosened enough for people to breathe again.
For the first time since Brian dragged me into that warehouse, I could too.
I stood alone on the balcony outside Torin’s room, both hands wrapped around a mug of coffee while cool morning air moved softly through my hair. Below me, Raven’s was waking up piece by piece. Reif argued with one of the prospects near the garage. Burdock barked at somebody for leaving tools out in the rain. Somewhere farther back, music drifted low through an open bay door.
Normal life; messy, loud, imperfect, mine.
The thought settled warmly through my chest while I stared out across the compound. A few days ago, I wasn’t sure I’d ever feel steady again. Brian stole more than freedom inside that warehouse. He stole certainty. Trust. The illusion that danger always looked dangerous from the start. But he didn’t take everything.
A quiet creak sounded behind me before warmth settled instantly against my back, Torin’s arms wrapping around my waist while his chin rested lightly against the top of my head.
“You disappeared,” he muttered sleepily.
A smile tugged softly at my mouth. “I walked ten feet.”
He shrugged. “Still counts.”
The roughness in his voice wrapped around me almost as securely as his arms did.
For a while neither of us spoke. We just stood there together watching the compound wake up beneath the morning sun while his thumbs moved slowly back and forth against my stomach.
Comfort, that was the word for this now. Not obsession, not fear. Comfort. The difference mattered more than I could explain.
Torin shifted slightly behind me before pressing a soft kiss against my temple. “You sleep okay?” he questioned quietly.
I nodded. “Better.” Not perfect, maybe not for a while, but better.
His arms tightened faintly around me afterward like he understood the difference without needing it explained further. That was the thing about Torin most people never saw beneath all the violence and rough edges. He noticed things. Small things. The way my breathing changed before nightmares woke me fully. The way I reached for him in my sleep now afterward. The way silence sometimes hurt more than words.
“I talked to the lawyer this morning,” he muttered after another second.
I leaned back slightly against his chest. “About Brian?”
He nodded once. “Yeah.”
The name still landed strangely inside me now. Less fear than disappointment. Sadness maybe. The kind that came from realizing somebody you trusted never really existed the way you believed they did.
“He’s taking a plea deal,” Torin continued quietly. “Psych evaluation too.”
I closed my eyes briefly. Somewhere out there, Brian was sitting in a cell probably still convincing himself he loved me. Still believing he was trying to save me from a life he didn’t understand. The thought no longer terrified me the way it did before. Mostly it just made me tired.
“You okay?” Torin asked softly against my hair.
I nodded once before turning slowly inside his arms until I could look up at him properly. Bruising still lingered faintly along his jaw from the warehouse. Healing knuckles. Exhaustion around his eyes he’d tried pretending wasn’t there; beautiful man. Dangerous man. My man.
“I’m okay,” I answered honestly, and this time, I really meant it.
Torin studied my face carefully like he was searching for cracks beneath the words before one of his hands slid upward, rough fingers brushing lightly across my cheek.
“You know,” he muttered quietly, “I still hate that you went through any of this because of me.”
There it was, guilt. Still sitting inside him even after everything else settled.
I reached up slowly, resting my hand over his wrist before shaking my head faintly. “No,” I whispered. “I went through it because Brian made a choice.”
Torin’s jaw tightened slightly. “He was obsessed with you because of me.”
“Maybe,” I admitted softly. “But loving you was still my choice.”
Silence settled between us after that, warm and quiet instead of heavy. Then finally, Torin exhaled slowly like some part of him had been holding his breath waiting to hear those words out loud.
“I’m not good at this,” he confessed after another second, the corner of his mouth twitching faintly. “The feelings shit.”
A laugh escaped me softly as I slid both arms around his waist. “I noticed.”
A laugh whispered from between his lips. “Smartass.”
“Biker,” I returned.
That finally pulled a real smile from him. Small, crooked, rare enough it still felt like discovering hidden treasure every time it happened.
I looked up at him quietly afterward while sunlight spilled across the balcony around us. For so long, loving Torin felt like standing too close to a wildfire. Beautiful, consuming, and dangerous enough to ruin me if I stayed there too long.
Maybe part of that would always be true. Loving him would never be soft in the way ordinary people probably understood love. But ordinary never fit either of us anyway. Because beneath all the violence and scars and chaos wrapped around his name, Torin loved me carefully, honestly. Even when honesty hurt him. Brian wanted possession. Torin wanted choice. That difference meant everything.
“You thinking hard again?” Torin muttered, thumb brushing slowly along my hip.
“Maybe,” I answered.
“Dangerous hobby,” he murmured.
I smiled softly before leaning upward, pressing my mouth against his gently enough it felt more like a promise than a kiss.
When I pulled back, his forehead rested briefly against mine while the morning wind moved around us cool and clean. Below us, the clubhouse carried on waking up. And standing there in Torin’s arms, with sunlight spilling across both of us and the worst finally behind us, I realized something quietly beautiful. Some people spent their whole lives searching for safe love. I found mine in the middle of the storm anyway.
