Chapter 90 Untitled Chapter
GIANNA

“I wouldn't dare. These old bones can barely carry me, but I will appreciate it if you allow an old woman her dignity.”

“What do you want?” he asked graciously. Nodding to the woman, Vera unties Grams, which she instantly does. Grams stood up and stretched her head, her eyes went towards the burning flame.

“You don't mind sharing your fire, do you?” she asked, but she was already walking there. When she stopped close enough to the burn-barrel she stretched her elegant wrinkling hands to warm them up.

“Of course, please help yourself,” Colton said. A muscle in his jaw twitched.

“My cane, I don't see it anywhere,” Bridget said.

“Jimmy, get the old lady her walking stick,” Colton ordered. I don't know why he's suddenly being all accommodating.

I feel so anxious, like something is going to happen to Grams when Colton's patience finally snaps. Aunt Layla, Tessa, and Chloe were all tense, and that assured me that I wasn't the only one feeling that way.

“Yes Boss.” Jimmy scurried away to the door I'd been looking for in case we managed to escape. Soon enough he was back. He handed the stick to Colton who told him to give it to Grams.

Bridget took the stick and began walking back to us. She instructed one of the men to bring her chair away from the falling snow.

Still, Colton accommodated her and made the man do it while we all stared with anxious anticipation.

“Now Colton, I'm not surprised that you're finally showing your true color. You've always been like that, greedy, rotten, and ugly to the core,” Bridget said without an ounce of fear in her eyes.

Colton's face contorted with anger, making my heartbeat triple in fear. I don't know what Grams is trying to achieve by making him more angry.

Colton has always been vain about his good looks. He had used his handsome face and charming smile on the people of Chicago, which had earned him their hearts and his nickname.

I remember how he used to spend double the time I took getting ready (me being a woman and all) whenever we were going out.

So, this new face and our reactions to him must have grated badly. As such, I don't see the wisdom of Grams trying to make him mad, poking at his insecurity—I mean, the man was already halfway mad.

My stomach was knotted so badly with nerves, to say I was terrified is an understatement.

“Grams?” I cautioned.

“Hush girl,” she shushed me.

“I'm not going to apologize for what happened to you. Because even if I did we'll both know it's a lie. And I did what I did back then to protect my family…my granddaughter against a bad man and I would do it all over again.”

“I'll watch my mouth if I were you, Bridget.”

“Or you'll what? Kill me?” she scoffed.

“Then go ahead and do it, boy. I've been around for a long time, there aren't many things I haven't seen or done, though I will confess I haven't met a more shameless scoundrel than you. But, I understand sometimes life throws you wrenches to test you. It's like when you stick your feet in a pile of poop. Do you cut your feet? No, you wash it and get on with your day.”

“Colton, let me just kill this old hag; she's wasting our time; we've got a flight to catch,” said Benji, moving closer to where Colton was. Before Colton or anyone could say a word.

There was a loud cracking sound as Bridget's walking stick connected with Benji’s bald head.

“What the fuck?!” the man cursed loudly.

“You dare you call me a hag? I bet your mother would have flushed you down the toilet if she knew you would turn into this miserable excuse of a man, you disrespectful little piece of shit,” Grams said, raining more blows on him. The other men cackle like a den of hyenas.

Benji jumped around shouting as he tried to grab at the stick, but failed as Bridget pelted him some more while the other men and even the woman laughed uproariously.

I was flabbergasted, I would have found the whole situation funny if I hadn't seen Colton’s pissed-up face.

He looked so enraged, he yanked his gun from his waist and instantly my heart dropped as he raised it.

“No!” I screamed, thinking he was going to shoot Grams himself; instead, he shot at the ceiling. Tears trail down my face in utter relief.

Grams put down her cane while Benji glared at her for the longest time, his face and head now red from Gram's assault.

“Enough messing around. I'm tired of your little tricks. If you think you're buying time, know that no one will find you. Not the cops or anyone.” Grams sighed for the first time, she looked so old in my eyes.

This strong businesswoman has been my rock and my role model.

“I've lived a long life, Colton, so I'm not scared of death. But how do I know you won't kill my family when you get what you want? So, in light of this, I want to negotiate with you. You will allow the kids to go and I will send you sixty million.”

“No, they all stay. I'm not negotiating with you. And if you delay a second longer than the necessary time for the transaction, I will shoot one of these women; I don't care who, probably sweet Chloe here,” he threatened.

“Then Tessa, Layla, but I will, of course, leave Gigi for the last. You see, I have another surprise for her,” he said with an ominous chuckle.

Poor Chloe has already started sobbing. Aunt Layla and Tessa kept their eyes firmly on the other men who were waving their guns in their faces.

“Benji, show them,” he said with a maniacal smile that made my chest suddenly so tight. I was surprised when Benji switched on to a live podcast.

My heart thundered as a picture of me stared back at me from the side of my screen. The caption reads;
