Chapter 48 – The Wolfe in the Shadows
The Name That Shouldn’t Be Spoken
Xavier leaned back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest. His silver eyes gleamed in the dim office light as he studied Raine, gauging her reaction to the name he had just mentioned.
Lucien Wolfe.
Raine frowned, gripping the armrest of her chair. “Lucien Wolfe… Kieran’s older brother?”
Reed let out a sharp breath, exchanging a look with Ivy. “Yeah. And the rightful heir to the Blood Moon Pack.”
Ivy scoffed, shaking her head. “Well, he was. Until he vanished off the face of the earth.”
Raine turned to Xavier, her heart pounding. “And Kieran’s bringing him up now?”
Xavier’s lips pressed into a thin line. He exhaled slowly, his fingers drumming against the polished wood of his desk. “That’s what we need to figure out.”
The room fell silent.
Something about the way they spoke of Lucien unsettled her. It wasn’t just because he was Kieran’s brother—it was the weight behind his name. The way even Xavier and Reed, who rarely seemed shaken by anything, treated this like a serious threat.
Then Xavier finally spoke, his voice controlled, deliberate.
“Lucien Wolfe wasn’t just Kieran’s older brother. He was stronger. Smarter. More ruthless. He was born to lead.”
Raine’s stomach twisted.
Ivy leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. “But then he disappeared. Some say he left on his own. Others say the Elders had him killed.”
Raine furrowed her brows. “Why?”
Reed rubbed his temples. “Because Kieran was never meant to be Alpha.”
That sent a shockwave through her.
She had always seen Kieran as an unshakable force—ruthless, untouchable. To hear that he wasn’t supposed to be in control made everything she thought she knew about him feel unstable.
Xavier’s jaw ticked. “Kieran doesn’t talk about Lucien. Doesn’t even let people mention his name. If he’s bringing him up now, it means something has changed.”
A cold shiver ran down Raine’s spine.
Lucien wasn’t just a ghost of the past.
He was a storm waiting to break.
The Watcher in the Dark
Raine took a deep breath, steadying herself. But something didn’t sit right.
Something about Lucien’s name stirred memories—shadows in the night, eyes watching her when she was alone.
She straightened, gripping the edge of her chair.
“Wait.”
Ivy frowned. “What?”
Raine’s mouth felt dry. “What did Lucien look like?”
Reed blinked. “Why?”
Her mind was racing now, pulling up fragments she had dismissed as paranoia.
The figure she had seen.
The one watching her from the shadows.
“At first, I thought it was Kieran’s men,” Raine admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “But… it wasn’t. The presence felt different. Not like a threat. More like an observer.”
Xavier sat up straighter. His entire posture shifted. Predatory. Alert.
“Are you saying Lucien Wolfe has been watching you?”
Ivy’s face paled. “And you didn’t think to say anything?!”
Raine snapped her gaze to her. “I thought I was imagining things! You all made me think I was being paranoid!”
Reed muttered a curse under his breath. “If Lucien is watching you, it means he’s been in the city this whole time. And he’s waiting for something.”
Raine’s hands clenched.
If Lucien had been watching her all this time…
What did he want?
At the Wolfe Enterprises tower, Kieran stood by the large window of his penthouse office, overlooking the city.
His fingers curled into fists as his Beta, Damien Cade, spoke beside him.
“There are whispers, Kieran.”
Kieran’s jaw clenched. “Whispers about what?”
Damien hesitated before answering.
“Your brother.”
A muscle ticked in Kieran’s jaw. Lucien.
That name had not been spoken in years. Not in his presence.
Not without consequences.
Kieran turned slowly, his golden eyes burning with warning. “Are you telling me my brother has returned?”
Damien exhaled. “No confirmation yet. Just… rumors. A shadow moving through the city. A figure watching from the rooftops.”
Kieran’s hands slammed against the desk.
“Lucien is dead. He’s not coming back.”
Damien didn’t flinch. “Then why are people seeing him?”
Kieran’s breathing shallowed, and for the first time in years, he felt something cold coil in his chest.
Not fear—Kieran didn’t fear anyone.
But uncertainty.
Because if Lucien truly was back…
It meant everything Kieran had built was about to fall apart.
Later that night, Raine couldn’t sleep.
She lay awake in the dim room, staring at the ceiling, Lucien Wolfe’s name circling her thoughts like a haunting melody.
Her heart was restless. Something wasn’t right.
She sat up, pushing the covers aside. The room was silent except for the distant hum of the city beyond the windows. The air felt too still.
Then she felt it.
A prickle of awareness.
She turned sharply toward the window, her breath catching in her throat.
A figure stood on the rooftop across the street.
The same silhouette she had seen before.
The Watcher.
A flash of silver in the moonlight—eyes locking with hers.
Her chest tightened.
She should feel fear. But instead… she felt something else.
A pull.
A connection.
The moment stretched too long, like the world had slowed.
And then—
He was gone.
Vanishing into the shadows like he had never been there at all.
Raine sat frozen, the weight of the encounter pressing against her ribs.
Lucien Wolfe was real.
And he was closer than ever.
Kieran’s Growing Paranoia
Kieran paced his office, restless, uneasy.
The whispers of Lucien’s presence refused to leave his mind.
He reached for his glass of whiskey, but his hands were shaking.
He growled and slammed the glass down.
Then he heard a chuckle.
Low. Amused.
Not Damien’s.
Kieran’s breath caught in his throat.
“Are you afraid of ghosts, little brother?”
Kieran whirled around—
But the room was empty.
His pulse thundered in his ears.
The air had shifted.
A presence that shouldn’t exist lingered in the shadows.
Lucien.
