Chapter 29 – The First Breakthrough
Raine sat on the edge of the sleek examination table, tapping her fingers against her knee. The lab was filled with a hum of machinery—screens flickered with data, while tubes of glowing liquid ran through advanced medical devices. **She hated this.** The feeling of being studied, of being a puzzle someone else had to solve.
Dr. Elias Rowan stood at his workstation, scrolling through **rows of genetic sequences, brainwave activity scans, and cellular regeneration reports.** His silver eyes flicked toward her, expression unreadable.
"Your body is… resisting."
Raine’s brow furrowed. "Resisting what?"
Elias exhaled, turning the screen toward her. It showed an image of **her own cells—some of them darkened, as if frozen in stasis.**
"Your natural healing ability is working at less than half the normal rate for a werewolf. And this—" He pointed to a highlighted section of the scan. "—shows areas of your brain that should be active in wolves with enhanced abilities. But they’re… dormant."
She clenched her fists. "So, I’m still locked out of my own power."
"Yes." Elias turned to his equipment, adjusting a few controls. "But I have a theory."
Xavier, who had been leaning against the wall, arms crossed, finally spoke. "Well? Let’s hear it."
Elias continued typing, pulling up another image. "Your body isn’t just blocked—it’s **fighting** the block. That means we might not need to break it open all at once. We might be able to… coax it out."
Raine arched a brow. "Coax?"
Elias smirked. "Think of it like stretching a muscle you haven’t used in years. If we **stimulate the right parts of your body**, we might be able to wake your abilities up gradually, without forcing anything."
Xavier frowned. "And what does that involve?"
Elias turned to a tray of medical instruments and **a sleek, glass-like device with small, silver needles at the end.**
"A neural recalibration process," he said, picking up the device. "It uses targeted electrical pulses to reactivate dormant areas of the brain. It’s **experimental**, but it’s the safest way to begin unlocking her abilities without causing permanent damage."
Raine eyed the device warily. "Sounds painful."
Elias gave a small shrug. "It won’t be pleasant. But you’re tough, aren’t you?"
She scowled. "Fine. Let’s do it."

Raine lay on the examination table, electrodes placed on her temples, spine, and wrists. The machine **hummed to life**, and a faint tingle spread through her skin.
Elias stood over her, monitoring the readings. "I’m going to start with a low frequency. You’ll feel pressure, maybe some tingling."
She **barely** had time to prepare before a **sharp jolt of energy** surged through her. Not painful—**just strange.** It felt like her nerves were being woken up, like a foot that had fallen asleep suddenly tingling back to life.
Raine gasped, gripping the edges of the table. "What the hell—"
"Stay still," Elias instructed. "We’re activating the first neural pathway."
Xavier watched silently, eyes locked on her.
The tingling sensation intensified. Then, **heat.**
A burning feeling spread through her **spine and chest**, as if something inside her was struggling to move. Her heart pounded.
"Your vitals are spiking," Elias muttered, adjusting the controls. "That means something’s responding. Good."
Raine clenched her teeth. **It didn’t feel good.** It felt like something **ancient** inside her was stirring, like a beast that had been caged for too long.
Then, suddenly—
A **rush of cold.**
Her entire body went rigid, as if **ice was spreading through her veins.**
Her breathing turned shallow.
Elias cursed. "Something’s wrong—her nervous system is overreacting!"
Xavier was instantly at her side, gripping her arm. "Raine, talk to me."
She tried. She really did. But she couldn’t move. Couldn’t even blink.
Her mind was **somewhere else.**
\---
A **blinding light.**
A voice—familiar, but distant.
"She doesn’t know what she is. She can’t."
Another voice. **Deeper. Harsher.**
"If we don’t suppress it, she’ll be unstoppable."
Raine’s heartbeat thundered in her ears. **Who were they talking about?**
Then—pain.
A sharp, burning sensation at the base of her skull. A memory she shouldn’t have.
And suddenly—
**She was back.**
\---
Raine **gasped**, her body jolting violently as the machine powered down.
Xavier caught her before she could roll off the table, holding her steady.
"What the fuck just happened?" he growled at Elias.
Elias was already scanning the monitors, his face unusually tense.
Raine’s body **ached**—but not from the machine.
That… memory.
"What did you see?" Xavier asked, his tone **deadly serious.**
Raine swallowed hard. "Someone—someone was talking about suppressing something. About stopping… me."
Xavier’s grip on her arm tightened. "Who?"
She shook her head, breath shaky. "I don’t know. But it wasn’t just about blocking my powers. **They were afraid of what I’d become.**"
Elias exhaled, rubbing his chin. "This confirms it, then." He turned back to the monitor, tapping the screen. "The suppression wasn’t just genetic—it was reinforced through **mental conditioning.** Someone implanted **barriers in your mind** to keep your power from breaking through."
Xavier’s jaw clenched. "Can you remove them?"
Elias hesitated. "I don’t know yet. But today proved something important—"
He turned to Raine, his silver eyes gleaming.
"Your power is still in there," he said softly. "And now, **it’s starting to wake up.**"
Raine’s breath hitched.
She could feel it.
A **shift** deep inside her. A crack in the suppression.
Something **had changed.**
And this was only the beginning.
