Chapter Five
Chapter Five
I'm surprised when I wake up early again this morning, and actually put in an effort to look nice. This morning I actually comb my hair. The knots drive me insane. I blow dry it then put it on the curling iron.
I go though my mother's staff and luckily find a lipstick. This one is not my colour. I rummage through the lot until I find something that matches my eye.
The dragon, yes it is back.
The Sprinter, yes it is back. I walk out the gate with my feisty girl attitude. This guy doesn’t know me, I’m not riding off to the friggin sunset with him, who does he think he is?
As I approach, he leaps off the dragon and lands gracefully on all fours. Barefoot, no surprise there.
He pats his dragon and it lifts its wings allowing him to lean on its slender, rough body, ankles crossed, hands folded across his chest. He looks at me, like I’m the only living thing in the world, like he has waited for this moment all his life. I am supposed to feel uncomfortable around now. I ’m not.
I walk straight to him and stand with my hands on my waist. “How long are you going to keep stalking me?”
He smiles right after an expression that says “I’m rolling my eyes” without actually rolling the eyes.
“Depends,” he says, a smug look on his face. "How long are you going to deny we're mates?"
The smile, again, runs to my lips without warning me.
He signals the dragon somehow and it lowers, encouraging me to climb on. I want to protest, but they're both looking at me, I’m defeated, I get in. Bloody Pinocchio!!
The plan is to look out at the beautiful clouds, to stretch out my hands, see if I can grab them throughout the trip, no talking and no agreeing to anything. I'm not sure when I
made these plans because when I left my house five minutes ago I wasn’t going to let a mere dragon seduce me into submission.
“So, Ms. Hale, how long are you going to keep rejecting me?
I take a sharp breath in. “You know my last name?”
“Oh c'mon Danielle, isn't it part of my job as your mate to know you better than you know yourself? I mean if not to do your every bidding, what could I possibly have been born for?” he says with a smirk or a smile or a… I don’t know anymore with this guy.
“By the way, the name's Carl,” he says.
Whatever, Pinocchio, I think to myself.
The trip to work seems shorter today, could be because I didn’t have to take the bus or most probably the fact that I’m having a flowing conversation with a man I thought wanted to kidnap and kill me just three days ago.
His dragon is calmer than I thought by, friendly even, not that my heart isnt in my throat still but I mean, it's a friggin dragon, which everyone on earth thought were exitent until he started flaunting his around.
We didn’t really get into deeper details about ourselves but we were talking, and we were laughing and we have eye-lock moments and we connect, like really connect.
I realize after he leaves that he didn’t ask for my phone number. Oh good, now I want him to call me? What ’s next Danielle? Hand him your vagina in a dessert bowl?
Scott calls me to the back the second I walk in. He looks at me funny before handing me the phone. I frown. It must be a customer that left something who was probably seated at my section.
"You smelled amazing, like vanilla or roses or a combination of the two, as always," he says. "You'll smell more amazing once I mark you as mine."
“You have my office number?”
"What a weird girl," he says, "shouldn't you be more worried that I have your house and cellphone number?"
Why am I impressed by all this?
“Should I bring you lunch? ” he asks
“I don’t think you’re the type that asks for permission to do anything, but no, I'll probably eat some left over stake from a customer, since I'm the only one that can get away with it. And by the way, I ’ll never bear your mark on my neck,” I say before a nonnegotiable goodbye.
Six long hours later it’s time to knock off and yes the dragon is outside making people take out their phones to take pictures.
I need to start asking this Alpha dude some questions.
“So, while you chase me all over the quater, who is guarding the territory for you?”
For a moment he looks at me like he doesn’t understand what I’m talking about, and then, immediately says: “Jeremy is there”.
“Who is Jeremy”
“The Sixth son.”
“Okay,” I say and move on to scanning my surroundings. There's not much to see except the scales of the dragon. I'm reminded yet again where I am. I shudder.
“I should get you a car? ” he says suddenly.
“I can't even drive”.
“You must learn. It’s important that you do,” he says.
I frown. Who died and made him my father
The trip home is even better than the morning one. By the time the dragon lands at my front lawn I know I will miss him the moment I step down from his enormous beast. But I can’t show him that. I’m a Hale, that makes me a cross-breed between a hard-head and a manipulator. With a simple ‘thanks’ I hop off the beast, fix my hair and start walking away. To my surprise he sits still, watches me walk and only flys off after I switch on the light in the kitchen.
Good for him.
I have to cook dinner tonight so I tune in to YouTube, I'm sure I'll find a simple enough recipe for chicken. I do. "How to grill a chicken to five star perfection" that's the video I've been watching and trying to deciper for the past two hours. If only I could figure out what this man is doing because I can’t figure out if this is a how to or a horror tale about abusing chickens. Anyway, I have to impress my brother, so I have to finish it.
Carl calls me two times before I have to go to sleep at nine pm. And as I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, I suddenly realize I forgot to call be boyfriend of sorts. Ugh. Finn will be fine.
I don't bother asking Carl if he'll pick me up tomorrow morning, but I know he’ll be there.
Yes, he isn’t Pinocchio or idiot or stalker or dragon weilder anymore, his name is Carl True.
Dawn finds me awake. I wonder what is wrong with me. Am I coming down with something? I'm more than an hour early for my shift.
I see the dragon watching me. As I close the front door trying to be quiet so Scott doesn't hear me, I notice Carl isn't with the beast but instead at the other side of the fence talking to Mrs. Jones.
He's wearing shoes today, sneakers, wow. This is the first time I've seen him any sort of shoes on him. Okay, I've known him for about four days.
