Chapter 64

Anna’s POV:

I took a deep breath and smoothed the wrinkles in my black dress.

\“Let’s go back,” I said softly to Blake, who towered beside me with his usual imposing presence,

As I tried to walk past him, his arm shot out, blocking my path. His e–blue eyes fixed on mine,

Instead of pushing past him or arguing as I might have seemed to surprise him as much as it did me.

Blake remained silen but his body language spoke volumes–shoulders tense, jaw clenched tight.

“What are you doing?” he finally asked, his voice cold and wary at my touch. “Don’t think this will make me forget your conversations with Seth just now.”

I lowered my eyes, keeping my voice gentle. “A capable man and a woman who needs support aren’t contradictory, are they?”

Mom just died, and here I am, swallowing my pride… The thought cut through me, but I quickly pushed it aside. Some struggles are pointless.

My mother’s words echoed in my mind, and I realized she’d been right. Sometimes strategic submission was the only way forward.

Blake grabbed my wrist, his grip tight enough to make my skin pale. He pulled me roughly against him, ignoring the surprised glances from the few remaining funeral guests who quickly looked away.

I felt his muscles tense beneath his perfectly tailored suit.

Seeing a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes, I made a calculated move, rising on my toes to kiss his jaw. My stomach churned as I did

“Is this enough, darling?” I asked, my voice soft but my eyes cold. “Or do you need me to do something more inappropriate at my mother’s funeral to prove my loyalty?”

His mouth curled into a cold smile. “So, in your heart, I’m more capable than Seth Price?”

There was a fire in his eyes, and his palm grew hotter, making my blood boil.

Especially after I realized that Seth had feelings for me, all of Blake’s past warnings took on a different meaning. I couldn’t help but wonder–did he actually care about me in some way?

Suddenly, a sharp pain in my waist snapped me back to reality, I caught the displeasure in his eyes, and it was clear as day.

As I came to my senses, I understood that he didn’t really care about me; it was just his possessiveness rearing its ugly head.

“Of course,” I answered. “He’s nothing compared to you. Just a… worthless playboy.” I deliberately chos

him.

“Finally, some honesty from you,” he said, his voice softening slightly

When I tried to leave, Blake wrapped his arm around my waist, his fingers suggestively tracing my side.
