Chapter 160

Anna’s POV:
After getting my emotions under control, I deliberately pulled Scarlett into my arms. My eyes, however, involuntarily darted toward Anna
I couldn’t help it. Something about her always drew my attention, even when I was trying my hardest to ignore her.
1 let out a cold laugh. “What’s wrong with keeping pets? III we to keep one, I’d only keep the obedient kind, not someone like you.” Anna had never listened to me. She always talked back, challenged me at every turn. Not like Scarlett, who knew her place.
I deliberately raised my voice, making sure Atinn could hear every word. “What’s so good about a fireworks show? Scarlett, tonight I’ll light up the entire city with a light show just for you, I’ll show you what a real spectacle looks like.” I caught the flash of pain in Anna’s eyes, and it gave me a twisted sense of satisfaction.
I looked at Anna challengingly. “Even if I treat her like a pet, I still make her happier than you ever were. Look at yourself now, what a mess. You’re not doing much better with Seth, are you?”
Scarlett tugged at my sleeve. “Blake, don’t. There are too many people here, lots of reporters. This isn’t the place
I noticed Anna’s gaze fixed on Scarlett, and how much more confident Scarlett seemed now,
I studied Anna’s face, watching every flicker of emotion. The pain in her eyes made my chest tight, but I kept my face impassive, refusing to show any weakness.
Anna’s response to my fireworks comment caught me off guard, You can be as dissatisfied with me as you want, but you shouldn’t bring up that fireworks show, You have no idea what those fireworks meant to me….
Suddenly, Anna clutched her chest, her voice trembling. “By your standards, of course I’m not doing as well as you.”
Her whole body shook as she confronted me. “Blake, in the past month, have you spent even one minute thinking about our unborn child?”
Her words hit me hard. My bravado faded away, replaced by a wave of guilt and anguish that made it hard to breathe.
Anna observed my reaction and a cold laugh.
“You haven’t, have yo
you?” she continued, each word a dagger. “If you had, how could you face Claire so calmly? How could you be at peace with the person who killed your child?”
“If you had, how could you parade around at social events with another woman?“.
“If I were half as cold–blooded as you, I wouldn’t be in this state now. I wouldn’t be giving you the chance to humiliate
She finished with a final blow: “In that case, yes, I’m definitely not doing as well as you.”
Scarlett’s face turned uncomfortable. I could feel her awkwardness radiating.
“I’m going to check on some documents with the lawyer,” she said. “If you two need to talk, make it quick.”

Scarlett walked away briskly leaving Anna and me alone.
Without Scarlett as my prop, I suddenly felt dizzy. My body swaged, and I finally sank down onto the courthouse steps. I could feel my back curving, life a defeated man.
“Ed never shown such weakness before anyone else. Only with Anna did I ever let my guard
down completely.
“You’re no better, 1 shot back. “Seth comes and goes from your apartment day and night. Can you honestly say there’s nothing between you?” The thought of Seth seeing Anna every day drove me crazy with jealousy.
1 felt my face growing paler, my eyes burning. I clenched my la fighting not to fall apart in front of her.
“You once claimed to love me more than anything, I accused, yet you replaced me so efficiently. What right do you have to judge me from your moral high ground?”
I looked up at Anna and summoned the courage to reach out my hand. I couldn’t lose her like this.
“Keeping pets,” I heard myself saying, “whether it’s one or two, what’s the difference? Anna, would you let me keep you?” It was the closest I could come to an apology and a plea for her to stay.
I kept my arm extended despite the strong sea breeze, pointing steadfastly toward her, hoping she would accept my
gesture.
“You said you loved me, didn’t you?” I said softly, remembering the words she had whispered in my

that day. Words Id
Then I issued my ultimatum, my last desperate attempt. If you don’t agree, then I don’t like you anymore either.” I didn’t know how else to make her stay, so I resorted to this childish, Immature strategy.
I saw Anna’s eyes grow moist, making my heart race. She still cared for me.
Her gaze was complex and unreadable.
If only I had said these words earlier, would things have turned out differently?
Anna responded tiredly, “Let’s go. The lawyers are waiting for us to sign the papers.” I felt a crushing sense of defeat.
Watching Anna turn away decisively, I felt desperate and furious. I couldn’t just l
walk away.
I stood up and shouted at her retreating figure. “Anna, did you enjoy your birthday? I swear, I’ll never let you have another good day! Starting now!” If I couldn’t make her love me, at least I could make sure she’d never forget me.
