Chapter 13
Anna’s POV:
The silence on the other end was brief before my mother’s sigh came through. “Darling, if a man’s mind isn’t on you, that’s something you need to work on. You should have a child as soon as possible -that’s the only way to secure your position in the Wright family. William’s heart condition is
already so serious. His greatest wish is to hold a grandchild.”
I paced across the bedroom, staring at the perfectly made bed where Blake hadn’t slept in days.
The problem is with me? So if Blake stops making money in the future, it’s because I’m not supportive enough of his career. If Blake doesn’t come home, it’s because I haven’t captured his heart. No matter what, it’s always the woman’s fault!
“Blake doesn’t treat me well, and I can handle that. But you–the only person I’m related to by blood
-you disappoint me even more.” My voice cracked as I spoke.
“Mom, what about my happiness…”
“Anna!” She cut me off sharply. “You know how dangerous Blue Wave Technologies‘ situation is right
now! Do you want to watch our company crumble to nothing?”
I froze, shocked by my mother’s threat. *Why is it that whenever Blake and I fight, BlueWave
Technologies suddenly has problems?* I wanted to ask her that, but I bit my tongue.
Instead, I ran my fingers through my hair, painfully massaging my temples. I had no choice. “Alright.”
I hung up and started calling Blake. Once, twice, three times–each call went straight to voicemail. I
tried again and again, but there was never an answer.
“Damn it!” I slammed my phone onto the passenger seat and floored the gas pedal, speeding toward
his office. The familiar route to Wright Group headquarters blurred as I weaved through Boston
traffic.
He can’t avoid me forever. If he thinks I’ll just crawl back begging for forgiveness, he’s wrong.
The sleek glass tower of Wright Group loomed ahead as I pulled into the executive parking area.
On the top floor, Blake’s assistant jumped to her feet when she saw me approaching. Her expression shifted from surprise to panic as she rushed to intercept me before I could reach Blake’s office door.
“Mrs. Wright, perhaps you could wait here while I check if the CEO is available?” Her smile was strained, eyes darting between me and the door behind her.

I noticed her nervous glance and felt a chill crawl up my spine. “Is Blake saying he won’t see me?”
“No, no, that’s not it at all,” Melissa replied.
“Since when do I need permission to see my husband?” I moved past her, my patience evaporating.
The assistant followed close behind, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor. “Mrs. Wright! Please don’t put me in this position. It could affect my year–end evaluation…”
I turned to her, pulling myself up to my full height. “Don’t try to stop me, or you’ll be dealing with more than just a poor evaluation.”
As I approached Blake’s office, the door was slightly ajar. Before I could push it open, voices from inside stopped me cold.
Through the narrow opening, I saw Claire sitting on Blake’s lap, her slender legs covered in stockings swinging back and forth over his tailored pants. On his desk were two champagne flutes–unusual, since Blake typically preferred coffee and rarely drank alcohol outside of business functions. Even his smoking was occasional at best.
Claire looked like a delicate ballet doll, clinking her glass against his with a forbidden intimacy that made my stomach turn.
“Blakey, did you have another fight with Anna?” Claire’s sweet voice sounded.
Blake remained silent for a moment before taking a sip of champagne. “No.”
“You’re lying, Blakey. Why aren’t you answering all those calls from her?” Claire’s fingers played with
the collar of his shirt.
“It doesn’t matter,” Blake said, his voice low and dismissive. “In three days, she’ll come looking for
me to apologize.”
I felt sick. Blake truly has no sense of boundaries between siblings. The thought of being “Mrs. Wright” suddenly felt like a cruel joke. What kind of Mrs. Wright am I supposed to be when this is happening right in front of me?
The office door creaked loudly as I shoved it open with all my fury.
Claire jumped slightly but didn’t move from Blake’s lap. Her eyes widened in feigned surprise while
her arms remained wrapped around my husband’s neck.
“Blake, did you orchestrate what’s happening with my mother’s company?” My voice shook with rage
and hurt.
Claire gasped with her widened eyes. “Anna, what are you talking about? Blakey’s been with me the

whole time. He hasn’t done anything!”
She squirmed slightly on his lap, tightening her embrace. “Blakey, explain to her! Don’t fight, please!”
I felt tears forming but refused to let them fall. “I will absolutely never come begging for your forgiveness!”
As I turned to leave, Blake called after me, his voice commanding. “Anna! Stop right there!”
Only a fool would stay. I hurried away, eager to put distance between myself and the nauseating scene I’d just witnessed.
In the elevator, I tried calling my mom again, but she wasn’t answering. Desperate for information, I
dialed her assistant instead.
“You need to figure something out, Mrs. Wright,” her assistant said, sounding exhausted. “Lillian can’t even get details about what’s happening now. She’s already attended two cocktail parties today -if she keeps drinking like this, there will be serious consequences.”
I gripped the phone tighter. “Tell everyone to wait. I’m bringing someone who can help.”
My mind was already formulating a plan. I knew exactly who might be able to untangle this mess.
After leaving Wright Group headquarters, I drove to a quiet spot to make a call. I pulled over, took out my phone, and stared at the keypad, ready to dial a number I’d memorized years ago but never thought I’d actually use.
Does he still remember me? Would he be willing to help me?
