Chapter Thirty Six
Chapter Thirty Six
Draven's POV
The scent of burning sulfur and sacred ash hit me like a slap as I stumbled into the vault chamber… what was left of it.
The mirror was cracked. The sigils carved into the stone, once glowing with tethered power, flickered like dying embers. The anchoring circle that had taken me years… decades… to complete was now fractured. Broken by fire, blood, and betrayal.
I staggered forward, hand outstretched, staring into the jagged remains of the mirror. No more whispers. No more glimpses of Serelina in the moonlight. No more silent pull on the edge of her mind.
Gone.
Ferren.
The name hit me like a hammer. Rage churned in my chest, boiling over the careful control I had spent years cultivating.
“She had one purpose,” I hissed. “One command.”
And now she had stolen my sight. My reach. My grip on the girl I had raised from blood and prophecy and pain. I swung, shattering what remained of the mirror with my fist. Blood poured down my knuckles, but I didn’t feel it. Not through the growing hum in the walls… like footsteps in my bones.
They were here. I straightened, a slow, vicious smile twisting my face. “So. You’ve come.”
I turned toward the inner sanctum. My sanctum. Haven Ridge pulsed around me… walls laced with spells older than memory, traps hidden beneath stone and bone.
But it wasn’t enough. Not anymore. My tether to Serelina had weakened the moment Ferren destroyed the vault. My hold on her was unraveling like thread in firelight. And still… still… I could feel her. Close. Moonfire bright and surging, burning away the shadows I had cloaked her in since she was born.
A flicker of silver light glowed through the far corridor. Lucian. And just behind him… Her. Serelina. My creation. My destiny. My undoing.
I stepped back into the shadows, the collar of my coat stiff against my throat. My thoughts spiraled in one direction, “If I can’t hold her, I’ll break her. If I can’t break her, I’ll own what’s left when the fire clears.”
But even I could feel it now… something shifting. Tilting against me. Desperation curled around my ribs. Cold and real. I hissed to myself, then vanished into the darkness just as the door to the sanctum began to creak open.
Leo's POV
My shoulder slammed into the stone wall as another blast of arcane fire erupted near the corridor. The heat singed through the air, but I didn’t falter. Sword drawn, I twisted and drove my blade through the creature’s chest… a twisted hybrid of flesh and warding magic. The thing hissed and burst into ash.
“We need reinforcements on the south flank!” I shouted into the chaos, catching Callum’s eye. The younger warrior nodded and dove into the fray, his axe swinging wide.
The halls of Haven Ridge were crawling… infested with all of Draven’s warped creations. Guardians stitched from shadow, blood-born wards turned feral, and shifters that didn’t remember what side they were on. I limped forward, pain lancing through my leg with every step. I had wrapped it tight, even packed it with more of that old witch herb I had on me, but it wasn’t enough. Not for this. Not anymore. I leaned against a pillar, watching Ferren fight alongside Riven and the Duskveil vanguard, her movements sharp and desperate.
“Come on, Serelina,” I whispered, scanning for a sign. “End this before we all bleed out.”
Draven's POV
I moved through the shadowed halls like a ghost. My sanctuary was compromised, the vault obliterated, but my mind burned with clarity. One final trick. One final tether. In the heart of Haven Ridge, I drew the last of my blood into a sigil etched across the floor with a jagged knife… Serelina’s birth rune, inverted and corrupted. Around me, the walls pulsed with ancient power, flickering violently.
I had nothing left to lose. A whisper echoed from the shadows. Not words… just sound. Pressure. Echoes of laughter, the same twisted melody I had anchored to her mind all those years ago. My final snare. I poured the last of my strength into the trap, willing the chamber to warp with memory and pain.
“If I can’t control you,” I murmured, “then I’ll tear the world down trying.”
And then… I vanished into the dark, just as the chamber doors began to open.
Lucian's POV
The heavy doors creaked open, revealing a room soaked in magic and memory. Serelina’s steps faltered the moment they crossed the threshold. The scent of silver. Blood. Familiar… too familiar. My hand hovered protectively near hers, Kael bristling under my skin. “He’s here. He’s close.”
Serelina’s breath caught as her gaze locked on the runes scorched into the stone. Her rune. Or what used to be hers… now twisted and cruel.
“It’s a trap,” she said softly.
“We knew it would be,” I answered, scanning the space. “But it’s also where he’s weakest. Look at the lines… his power’s fracturing.”
Serelina nodded, Nyra stirring within her, radiating heat and strength. “Then let’s finish it.”
Together, we stepped into the room, unaware that behind the final veil of shadow… Draven watched. Waiting.
Jole's POV
I gritted my teeth as I stalked through the lower corridor, one hand glowing faintly with threads of Veilpower. The stone walls whispered with buried magic, thick with anticipation. Haven Ridge was a pulsing heart about to seize. I glanced to the side… Riven was limping, Callum was bleeding, and Ferren had just rejoined them with a hollow look in her eyes. The others were doing their best to regroup, but we all knew what was coming.
My thoughts flicked to Serelina. To the tether between them that had grown since my awakening. She’s close. I can feel her power building. I thought to myself.
I clenched my fist, trying to still the electricity thrumming beneath my skin. The Veil within me had awakened fully now. It hummed with sentience, like a living river of memory and fire.
I still didn’t know exactly what I was… but I knew one thing for damn sure. I would not let Serelina down.
Amaya's POV
I crouched beside Leo, my fingers pressed against the torn edge of his thigh wrap, tightening it. His leg was shaking, but his face was calm, eyes sharp.
“You’re not going to be able to run on this,” I said flatly.
Leo chuckled softly. “Running’s overrated. I’ll stand where I need to.”
“You’re going to get in the way, Leo.”
“I’ve been in the way my whole life, Ama.” His smile faded, replaced by something serious. “But not this time. I’ll hold the line so they can finish it.”
I hesitated… then placed my hand over his. “You better not die.”
Leo looked up at me, eyes burning gold for just a moment. “Not before you do, firestorm.”
I smirked faintly, but it didn’t reach my eyes. I stood, turning toward the echoing hallway ahead. Distant sounds of footsteps. Screams. Magic cracking the air.
“They’re going to need us at the front.”
Leo reached for his blade, testing his weight. “Let’s give them hell, then.”
Draven's POV
The walls of Haven Ridge trembled, dust raining from the ceiling like ash. I stumbled backward through the shattered door of the upper sanctum, my eyes wild.
Everything… everything… was falling apart.
The vault was gone. My soldiers were dying faster than I could call them back. The summoning circle was broken. The binding spell had failed. My men couldn’t stop the Moonfire. Couldn’t contain the Veilborn.
And now… they were coming. I could feel her. Serelina. Moonfire incarnate. A god born in the body of a girl. My masterpiece. My doom.
“No,” I whispered, voice trembling as I backed against the altar stone. “No, no, no… this was supposed to work. You were mine.”
I heard them coming. First the whisper of footfalls.
Then the slow rumble of Nyra’s growl echoing from the air itself. And then… The doors blew inward.
